Why do people get blind drunk at concerts?

DD went to a large concert venue last night which she said was marred by women (she said many were over 40 - i.e. my age 🤣) getting so drunk they were falling down the stairs, spilling drinks on people and in one case, accidentally hurting someone in the row in front by falling on them. She said it was so cringy and embarrassing.

DD and her mates couldn’t afford to get drunk even if they wanted to as a bottle of wine was £32!

I did notice the same thing last time I went to a concert, the row behind us all got so blotto they had to leave before the end, one woman lost her shoes, her boyfriend stormed out with embarrassment and another slipped over on the steps when she spilt her drink and hurt herself and was carried out by security.

* Because they are stupid. Why pay to attend a concert and then get so drunk you can't remember any of it? I find it pathetic.*

^I agree. Bunch of losers.

1forAll74 · 17/04/2022 13:44

It's their kind of fun, but they usually look stupid if they over do it with the booze, and sometimes not in control of what they are doing.

@SellFridges

I like to drink at gigs. Big gigs. Small gigs. Medium sized gigs. Festivals. I do as many as possible, it’s my happy place. I buy standing tickets and am always surrounded by other 40+ year old people enjoying a drink (gig going seems to be a continued passion for those who grew up in the 1990’s I’d say). I usually try not to sit down as I know those people have often bought tickets to enjoy a different experience to me.

I don’t like going for walks. I can’t think if anything more pointless than a walk in the countryside, struggling to park, having to make a picnic, not being able to find anywhere for a wee, all to end up back where you started. But I imagine some people who don’t like drinking at gigs love a good walk. Because we are all different.

Nothing wrong with drinking at concerts or anywhere else appropriate Getting so drunk to be a nuisance or a danger to yourself or others isn’t on wherever you are There seem to be 2 schools of drinking on MN - getting drunk at every opportunity or you are boring/never ever drinking more than one drink or you are an alcoholic There is a lot of middle ground

We saw a concert at Wembley and paid for Club Wembley tickets, so all food and drink included, after show disco etc. So everyone in our area had paid a lot of money to be there. The lady behind us was reeeeally drunk. (Obviously we all were to some extent) She was lovely and chatting away to us and lots of people, didn't cause any probs. But when the main act came on I looked round and she was fast asleep Shock. We still talk about her and spending all that money to miss the show....

Neverendingdust · 17/04/2022 13:50

It drives me insane OP. Pissed up idiots (mostly tragic older people too) ruining concerts literally boils my blood to the point where I’ll tell staff members so they get removed from the venue.

I don’t ever buy cheap seats for this reason, we will always aim to be within first two or three rows or at the very worst just next to the stage, venue staff will intervene if you make a fuss.

Fine if such fools want to waste their money on tickets for something they won’t remember watching but I’ll be damned if I’m wasting my money on a show I remember being ruined by pathetic drunks.

SellFridges you are the type of person I would love to stand next to!! Not bothered what age you are old or young as long as you are having a great time!

@Dumblebum

Because it’s fun?
Lol! I was gonna say that...
Momicrone · 17/04/2022 15:00

Are the performers not allowed to be under the influence of anything either?, or in this dystopian idealised scenario, entertainment must only be performed and consumed, stone cold sober, lets cancel Glastonbury

Feetupteashot · 17/04/2022 15:04

In my day you'd be lucky to escape the moshpit covered only in sweat and beer.....

dropthevipers · 17/04/2022 15:15

I never get this trouble at the Royal Opera House. Gets coat.

I agree.

I can understand having a few drinks and getting merry, but to get falling over drunk and spoil the event for other people just completely baffles me.

When DD was about 15 she went to see a band at the O2 in Leeds with a friend. I started receiving a barrage of texts from her because the woman in front was extremely drunk, and DD and her friend (who was 14) felt unsafe and scared. Fortunately someone alerted security and she was thrown out

BTW I don't drink at concerts because I am always the driver, and therefore I don't associate going to concerts with drinking.

Northernsoullover · 17/04/2022 15:36

I went to a concert on Friday. Unfortunately the rest of the people who should have gone with me ended up with covid so I took my 16 year old. Some drunk woman hit him for walking in front of her. We watched a woman take people out because she could barely stand up. I can't say I don't get why people do it because I always drank at concerts. However, now I don't drink any more I can say that it's actually much more fun being sober. I remember everything, and didn't spend yesterday hanging out of my arse.

LadyEloise1 · 17/04/2022 15:47

That is why I won't go to concerts any more, sadly.
Too many drunk people doing stupid things.
I'm glad I'm not alone in hating those scenarios.

cantbecoping · 17/04/2022 16:18

Ruins it for others. By all means have a few drinks and enjoy the gig but fighting, falling, vomiting, leary etc is just being a complete arsehole. Stay at home and do it in your garden, it's cheaper.

luciatrope · 17/04/2022 16:36

You do you and I'll do me

Ha! The motto of the selfish and entitled. Their desperation for alcohol ruins a good night for other people. And it's not like tickets are cheap these days...

CowboyFromHell · 17/04/2022 16:54

The drunken behaviour of some British people is so embarrassing. I was recently in a Spanish holiday resort and all the bars had big signs up in English saying “Please keep your top on”. They didn’t seem to need any equivalent signs in Spanish, French, German etc.

And yes, paying £££ for tickets to a concert you’re not even going to watch properly because you’re too drunk is ridiculous. Plus don’t even get me started on the people who watch entire concerts through their phone screen as they’re recording it!

MsItchy · 17/04/2022 16:57

I remember being at a concert years ago and drunk people were getting hauled out the crowd before the show even started! Ridiculous!

Menora · 17/04/2022 17:09

Using this analogy, If I paid to go to a concert and the performer on stage:
  • Kept going off stage mid set to buy alcohol at thr bar
  • was so drunk they kept falling over
  • fell asleep
  • fell on top of other people hurting them, or intentionally hit them
  • spilled their drinks over people standing nearby, soaking them

You would want your money back

Because it’s fun?
It stupid and looks incredibly immature.
Minikievs · 17/04/2022 17:49

Ha ha, it was me that said "you do you and I'll do me"
Not sure it warranted being called an entitled cunt 😂
I didn't fall on anyone. Hit any teenagers on the head. Spill my drunks over anyone.
But I was a drunk middle aged woman, having a good time.

I find middle aged female drunk people get a lot more eye rolling than other groups. As if we are so mortifyingly embarrassing Hmm

Minikievs · 17/04/2022 17:50

*drinks Grin

Profanisaurasrex · 17/04/2022 17:54

I think they just get carried away having fun.

I’m not one for getting blind drunk at concerts as it seems a shame to risk missing the experience or forgetting the show the next day etc. a few drinks, a bit tipsy, I’d enjoy but not falling over legless drunk.

I’ve been to several gigs where people are so drunk that the show is ruined for everyone around them which seems a shame.

Namechangeforthis88 · 17/04/2022 17:54

DH policed a Spice Girls gig, a real one off chance for fans to see the band and loads of the audience missed half the gig, pissed up and queuing for the toilets. It's up to them but for me that would be a waste of the evening and the ticket price.

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2022 17:59

I think a certain level of alcohol in your system would be essential to endure a Spice Girls gig all the way through. Grin

PrincessPaws · 17/04/2022 18:11

@Minikievs

As a mid 40s woman who got drunk at a concert with her best friend last week......

Because I rarely get the chance to do it because of child care.
Because I'd been looking forward to this concert for 2 1/2 years and it had been post poned for Covid three times.
Because having a drink is part of a night out with friends for me.
Because I like to forget about being a single mum and remember what it's like to be "me", singing along to old songs that I remember from years ago, with my friend and a glass of wine.

Not because I want to be judged by younger women rolling their eyes at me Hmm

You do you and I'll do me

I'm like you, it's not 'messy drunk' but it's definitely 'up dancing and having a good time' drunk!
