To be totally fed up with dogs?

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

I am finding this thread really disturbing ☹️ I understand not being a dog person - I’m not a cat person, but I’d never ever condone cruelty towards cats. I’d never tell anyone they couldn’t enjoy their company, or ever let them outside in case their presence was traumatising to me! You share public spaces with dogs, get over it. Get better at minding your own business instead of judging others and wishing ill on their animals. Some dogs around my area were killed by someone who was putting down poisoned treats and they never caught them. We do care about our dogs (they are like extra children) and it’s really upsetting to see so much hate.

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 14/04/2022 21:25

@Questiontellme for sure, but nobody on this thread has suggested anything of the sort.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 21:29

@cowskeepingmeupatnight

Please point me to posters who have said dogs should be on a lead all of the time? I can’t recall reading that.

It’s common sense really isn’t it? If it’s busy on pedestrian pathways put your dog on a lead. It’s not rocket science.

Entitled is absolutely the best word to use here and has no baring to any particular sex. Any dog owner can be entitled male or female.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/04/2022 21:29

@Trixiefirecracker

I think the problem with the teen/dog comparison is that lots of dog-obsessed people think their hounds are human and refer to them as their fur-babies. I guess the dogs are filling some kind of emotional void ..there was a thread of MN once where several people openly said there dogs were on a par with their children and not much to choose between the two. I actually found it really heartbreaking for the kids. Lots of guilt future therapy sessions lined up there.
There has been a gear change in dog owning attitudes that goes in parallel with those that parent in a very permissive "gentle" parenting way. And in the same way that 18m old Timmy doesn't understand "kind hands Timmy, I know you're disappointed that your biscuit broke but we can't go around hitting people" his 4 legged companion Arlo also doesn't understand "now do stop growling Arlo, you don't know this boy so do stop jumping up" Simple instructions like "no", "sit" or "get down" work much better on young humans and canines and contrary to popular belief doesn't actually cause that much psycological damage Wink
ForeverTeach · 14/04/2022 21:30

So on the back of this thread I have lots of plots of land for sale near me and am thinking of buying some to create a dog park. I can start my own thread if need be but can someone tell me how I go about even beginning to create a viable business? Would you use it, would it be worth it?

Phewthemutinyworked · 14/04/2022 21:31

@vodkaredbullgirl

Some people are so passionate on here.
Or pissed 🙄And bored with their lives IMHO !!
Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 21:31

@tigger2022

Overly dramatic. Please point me to posters who have stated dogs should not be allowed in outdoor spaces? Can’t recall reading that.

I’ve read that people don’t like dogs, but that’s not the same as wishing cruelty upon them. Again I haven’t read any post wishing cruelty on dogs.

Please stop being over dramatic.

Dogs on leads on busy pedestrian pathways is not the end of the world.

Yes! Exactly! I keep hearing people being polite to their dogs and asking them nicely to stop doing things. It is bizarre.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/04/2022 21:35

@ForeverTeach, there are a few dog field parks near me, my daughter and I are happy to pay. Best places ever, all enclosed, no other dogs, people or kids about. Both dogs love to run around and not worry about other dogs.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 21:36

Totally agree with the permissive dog training.

It is absolutely woeful and the amount of times I hear people say their dogs are “well trained” because they’ve been to a few puppy training classes (that did absolutely nothing) is astonishing.

There are very few well trained dogs about.

HulaTallulah · 14/04/2022 21:36

Yanbu. I cant stand them either. For shit all over the streets and parks, owners who can't control them and often let their flea ridden mutt jump all over you, assuming other people like their mangey hound as much as they do Hmm.

They should bring back the dog license fee and use it to clear the mess all over.

ForeverTeach · 14/04/2022 21:39

@vodkaredbullgirl I may have had three Aperol’s but my other half thinks it’s a great idea. I am in Kent if anyone might be interested.

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 14/04/2022 21:41

@Tulipblacksmith will this do you?

Dogs should not be pets. They should not be bred for the oohs and aahs. They are not meant to be domesticated. There is hardly enough room for people in urban areas for humans not to mind dogs.Working dogs and service dogs only please, which is what they are superb at.

I would not harm a dog, but I dislike them intensely. They take over everything in parks, on beaches, on the streets and so on.

Ok if dog runs and special parks are provided for urban dogs and everything else is left for humans, but that doesn't happen. There isn't enough room for both in urban settings.

Yes it is bizarre, I see my supposedly intelligent well-educated relatives do the same, and then do that sickly PFB grinning face as if the dog they've completely failed to train and never will was an actual baby and makes its owner a little bit special.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/04/2022 21:45

I know exactly the face you mean Quincunx.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 21:46

@cowskeepingmeupatnight

I agree that is an extreme view, have you got any more? Most posters have agreed dogs are entitled to open spaces. It is the sheer over entitlement that has increased in recent times that has sparked the debate.

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 14/04/2022 21:46

@ForeverTeach I would have used this when my dog was a puppy (up to 18 months) as it would have helped me teach recall safely and I could have managed her interactions with other dogs more closely. I have no need of it now, perfectly happy walking my dog locally where we have a happy balance between walkers, land owners and farmers. I would like to see more about though. People bonding with a rescue dog would really value it I think, and you could advertise through rehoming charities I bet…

ForeverTeach · 14/04/2022 21:48

@cowskeepingmeupatnight thank you that is a great idea and my vets is excellent so could advertise there.

Next question then: What would you pay?

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 21:51

@ForeverTeach it’s a good idea, my parents have rescue dogs that can’t normally go off-lead so they use dog fields a lot. You can rent them by the hour and they’re fully secure, so the dogs can run around and play.

ForeverTeach · 14/04/2022 21:52

@tigger2022 thank you. I think I will start my own thread as not to derail the passionate dog adverse on this one.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/04/2022 21:53

We pay between £6 and £15, depending on how long we want.

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 21:53

Derail away, this is a much nicer conversation 😅

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/04/2022 21:55

@ForeverTeach please, don't want to derail the thread Grin

Trixiefirecracker · 14/04/2022 21:59

I’d really like all dogs to be on leads, I think it would solve all kinds of problems. There could be dog parks where they can be let off the leash like in America and Europe. Fed up of people not knowing how to keep their dogs away from sheep and livestock. So many sheep have been damage/killed or have miscarried because of dogs in our area. Finding a bloody sheep with a bit chunk out of it is not fun. It’s extremely upsetting that this is still happening. Don’t understand why if you are walking through a field of sheep with your dog that you wouldn’t have it on a very tight leash.
