Inspired by another thread but mainly by my own experiences today.
In February it was 20p to use the public loos at our favourite seaside town. Today it has doubled to 40p! There are now contactless points incase you don't have any cash. 40p to pee!
Mr Kipling cherry Bakewells have jumped to £1.90 in Asda and I'm sure they used to be £1.40 or sometimes even £1 and that was only a few weeks back. Cake isn't essential I know, but peeing is. Things have gone up generally but the odd pence here and there isn't always noticed but these are huge jumps.

You can’t just get rid of pets when prices go up.

ExplodingElephants · 14/04/2022 07:27

We’ve spent £260 in Sainsbury’s over the last week. It’ll last us a while to be fair but a few months ago, the total would definitely have been under £200. Individually, Warbuton’s bread has gone up by about 25p a loaf which is a big percentage. Sometimes (weirdly) I’m now finding brands cheaper than sainsburys products. Eg Sherwood 8 poppodums were 25p (ish) cheaper than Sainsbury's own eight poppodums. Always worth checking these things.

DelilahBucket · 14/04/2022 07:28

Not that we can afford it but our favourite restaurant does steak night once a week for two people and it's gone from £25 to £35.

darlingdodo · 14/04/2022 07:33

sjpkgp1, those prices on veg are because of Easter - supermarkets do the same at Christmas, carrots, parsnips, sprouts, spuds for 19p a bag to entice people in, hoping they'll then spend £££££ on Heston Blumenthal Easter eggs and other assorted bollocks.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 14/04/2022 07:34

@SafelySoftly

Amazing how many people who say they are struggling have pets. I see them as a luxury that I’d only have if I wasn’t struggling with money. I couldn’t imagine my kids missing out because of animal costs.
So what do you suggest people do with the pets they already have then? I'm not going to just get rid of my two dogs.

Also most people are just commenting they have noticed prices have gone up, not that they are struggling.

darlingdodo · 14/04/2022 07:34

TenoringBehind, I'm sure we'll start to see the knock on effect of abandoned pets before too long.Sad

ShortShinyBobbafett · 14/04/2022 07:36

Aldi Scottish Salmon fillets - previously £2.99 now £3.99 in the space of three weeks.

I don’t have any pets but this is a strange POV especially at the moment.

Many people are going to be plumetted into financial difficulties at the moment. Many will have been “comfy” before all of this hits. You can’t just get rid of pets when the going gets tough.

Diditreallylookawful · 14/04/2022 07:36

Own brand gluten free cornflakes in the big supermarkets have gone up. Am coeliac so have to have gf. Small loaves are usually £3.45 (eek), but have seen them for £4.45.

Alexandra2001 · 14/04/2022 07:36

Tesco reporting pre tax profits of £2 Billion, which might be fine in normal times but does exactly show that price rises are more to do with keeping up profit and share holder dividend's.

My biggie is the Tamar bridge toll crossing, up 40% thats not something people who use it for work can avoid and on top of the Bridge company spending 5m on riverside offices.

notanothertakeaway · 14/04/2022 07:38

I filled the car with petrol. Over £100

On a similar note, if you have a Tesco Clubcard I found that when I went shopping last week lots of Tesco finest items were on Clubcard price and ended up being cheaper than normal own brand/branded. The biggest difference I saw was on baby potatoes, normal Tesco brand were £1 but Tesco finest were 59p reduced from £1.40 (so more than 50% off), I tend to ignore the finest products but worth a check now.
DrSbaitso · 14/04/2022 07:38

@littlepeas

It is now just over £100 to fill up my car - was £60ish when we got it. Perfectly ordinary family car, not a 4x4 or anything.
Yep, time was we could fill right up on empty for about £55. Now it's close to £80.
DelilahBucket · 14/04/2022 07:39

I forgot to add, our internet package was redone in October and I was pleasantly surprised that they dropped it from £26.99 a month to £25.99 a month. It is now £28.95. Just for sodding internet, nothing else added on at all. It's no wonder people can't afford to have something that you really do need these days.

IpanemaFleur · 14/04/2022 07:40

I foster dogs and believe me, people do get rid of pets when the going gets tough. There was an increase in pet ownership during lockdown too which I think will lead to problems.

TheWitchersWife · 14/04/2022 07:46

Meats from Iceland have gone from 4 for £10 to 4 for £12.
I really fancied some cheese doritoes, regularly got them on sale for £1, but the cheapest offer price is now £1.25.
Gas has gone from £47 a month to £74.
Electric from £88 to £124 a month.
Asda pizza meal deal wit movie nights in has gone from £5 to £6.
My local fish and chip shop, admittedly I haven't been for a while but their meals deals of "mini fish, sausage and chips" or "pork, Stuffing, gravy and chips" were £3.60. I really wanted one the other week, they're now £5.45, and with 4 of us in the house it just wasn't affordable so we just had something out the freezer.
These little loaf cakes at asda in the bakery section used to be 75p each or 2 for £1. I loved the lemon one! They're now £1 each or 2 for £1.50. Just seems like a big increase.
With big increases on the gas, eclectic and petrol/diesel, I can't justify the smaller increases on luxuries. So we don't get the takeaways now, or the little loaf cakes from asda. At least I'll be thinner.

Scottishskifun · 14/04/2022 07:47

Our fortnight online food shop has jumped from £110 to £160 so much so that I have switched to only getting one a month for the stuff we can't get in aldi

Ohjustboreoff · 14/04/2022 07:48

My O2 mobile phone contact has gone from £29 pm to £32.38p pm. A rise of over 10%! I only took it out in December'21
I don't even want to think about fuel costs.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/04/2022 07:49

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

The increases will impact on employment.

We usually have a takeaway on a Friday evening but it won't be happening now likewise with other guilty pleasures I won't be having my nails done either.

I think we're going to see massive numbers of takeaways, nail bars and similar closing down over the next year. Occasional treats and luxuries that people used to happily spend £20-£50 a time on will have to give way as the folk who used to have that money spare to buy them now have no choice but to spend it on increased prices for essentials.

I agree. I get my nails done once a month. I can just about continue to afford it for now. The price is probably going to increase soon though, once that happens I'll have to knock it on the head. I imagine a lot of people are thinking the same.
worriedaboutmoney2022 · 14/04/2022 07:50

@Muchtoomuchtodo

Premier Inn breakfasts.

Pre pandemic I always used to take my 2 dc for breakfast once every school holiday at our local Brewers Fayre that is attached to a premier Inn. I’m sure it was £7.50.

Took them yesterday and it’s now £9.50.

It’s still a treat and they definitely make the most of it but that’s a significant price hike for the same thing and a far bigger percentage increase than my NHS pay rise will be (let’s not start on the fact that the mileage rate hasn’t been adjusted for the huge increase in fuel costs that community workers like me are having to absorb).

FYI brewers fayre do 25% discount with blue light not a huge amount but it adds up x
bellabasset · 14/04/2022 07:50

Tesco - branded cheese up from £2:65 to £3, bread up from £1:10 to £1:20. Butter up from £1:48 to £1:55. Stork for cooking was £1:50 but I'd have thought it was £1:20. There's less choice of fruit and veg, but here in Cornwall it's madness season as visitors tend to empty shelves. There won't be an Easter egg in sight after today.

ExplodingElephants · 14/04/2022 07:51

Our car is now is the region of £85 to fill us (Tuscon) Used to be around £68. 😭

"I'm sure we'll start to see the knock on effect of abandoned pets before too long."

I have small local cat charities on my FB, I like to buy for their Amazon wish lists occasionally and people are dropping cats off in cat carriers, in droves. It doesn't help that many PDSAs are only seeing emergencies. An abscess on my cats face has so far cost me £140. He had a paw injury in November which cost me over £150. People just can't stretch that far. Many animal charities are at capacity.

WhiteFire · 14/04/2022 07:55

I get the 24/7 18 pack of loo rolls from Sainsbury's. It was £4.50 and went up to £5 overnight. It is often on my smart shop prices so I get it then, but it was £3.60 or something, now it will still be above £4.

As a pp said even what hasn't jumped massively has still gone up by 5/10/15p, and half the products now you can play 'I'm a giant' as they are so small.

CuddlyCactus · 14/04/2022 07:56

*Parking here is rubbish. You can buy a residents parking permit if you live within 200 metres from a designated car park.

For a six month permit, 3yrs ago, cost £45. Now it costs £100.*

Im struggling to see how the cost of providing parking has risen @OldTinHat Hmm
I understand fuel, food prices etc. But parking!! I bet the parking attendants wages haven't more than doubled in 3yrs
