Inspired by another thread but mainly by my own experiences today.
In February it was 20p to use the public loos at our favourite seaside town. Today it has doubled to 40p! There are now contactless points incase you don't have any cash. 40p to pee!
Mr Kipling cherry Bakewells have jumped to £1.90 in Asda and I'm sure they used to be £1.40 or sometimes even £1 and that was only a few weeks back. Cake isn't essential I know, but peeing is. Things have gone up generally but the odd pence here and there isn't always noticed but these are huge jumps.

Lurpack used to cost £2.75, or 2 for £5. Now £3.75 or 2 for £6.50.

elephantcandle · 28/04/2022 15:15

My hairdresser's bill seemed to have gone up £20 yesterday . Same service as previous. I was so shocked I just paid and walked out.

I think that, with a lot of things that aren't strictly essential (or are more premium options of essentials), we're going to see a lot of price rises of double and significantly more.

If, for argument's sake, a takeaway needed to sell (and did sell) 100 orders at £20 each before all of the price rises, but they now need to sell 100 orders at £30 each to make the same amount of money after all of their own vastly increased costs; but 25% of their customers now have to drop out as they can't afford to pay an extra tenner, they'll have no choice but to charge the remaining 75% of customers £40 each - and hope that that bigger increase doesn't price too many of them out.

Mathematically, if a third of those remaining customers could have stretched to £30 but can't now manage £40, that means the remaining people would need to pay £60 each if they can.... and so it leads to a vicious circle that will probably see a lot of takeaways - and other lovely but non-essential businesses - go under before too long Sad

Orangesandlemons77 · 28/04/2022 16:29

Been to Lidl today and thought some of their stuff was expensive, especially the branded stuff. Not many bargains!

Sooverthemill · 28/04/2022 16:46

Fish and chips for 2 last night was £30.45 up from 17.45 when we had it last ( January). A rare treat and even rarer now!

Sooverthemill · 28/04/2022 16:47

Ah! £20.45 not what my fat fingers typed

Decafflatteplease · 28/04/2022 17:15

Out butcher's used to do 3 prepared meals for £10. Not ready meals but sort of raw ingredients ready chopped eg mince with carrots onions in it for shepherds pie etc, chicken in a marinade with sliced peppers for fajitas etc. Now it's 2 for £8. Just in the last 2 weeks or so. Also they used to do a meat hamper for £10 now it's £12

ssd · 28/04/2022 17:16

Scottish blend teabags big box was £3, now £4.50 in sainsburys

Nat6999 · 28/04/2022 19:10

Ds used to buy a coffee on the station before he got on the train, increased from £3 to £4, I persuaded him to take two travel mugs made up from the Tassimo at home from Kenco Grande Xl pods & fresh milk warmed up in the microwave as a latte, £4.25 for 16 pods, he catches the train at least four times a week, saves him about £14 a week.

Nat6999 · 28/04/2022 19:23

Food shop has gone up from £175 a fortnight to £220, I've started sending ds to Farmfoods with my mum's shopping trolley for tinned stuff, pop, biscuits, frozen veg (still Birds Eye) table sauces, bags of sugar etc before I do the online shop, I've managed to get the shop down to £160 in total.

UndertheCedartree · 28/04/2022 19:28

My energy company want to put my DD up to £240. It was £90, then put up to £130 in September, just as the UC uplift was removed. This is despite me barely putting the heating on all winter ☹️

LakieLady · 28/04/2022 19:37

On-street parking down by my doctor's. Was £3 ph, now £4 ph and you have to pay with a phone app that charges another 35p on top.

LakieLady · 28/04/2022 20:44

Blueeyedgirl21 · 14/04/2022 16:49

I have to say though I went to home bargains for some random stuff today. Shampoo, pair of kiddies croc type shoes, stain remover, dishcloths and washing powder and it’s still really cheap. I think bargain stores are still a good shout. I’ll never buy stuff like Washing powder/vanish etc from supermarket really

I wish I could do that, but our nearest Wilko/B&M/HB are 12 and 18 miles away. I live alone, and doubt if the savings would cover the cost of the petrol.

MrOllivander · 28/04/2022 21:25

@LakieLady Wilko deliver! Use Quidco for cash back with them too
I often do a big order and stock up

XingMing · 28/04/2022 21:25

I buy eggs from an honesty box at a farm gate so all the profit goes to the farmer. A 15p increase for a half dozen eggs today, to cover rising costs.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/04/2022 21:31

How is this kind of thing even allowed? That's even worse than compulsory booking fees on event tickets - how can you possibly only give people one possible way to pay for something and then make them pay for the 'privilege' of paying for it?

AdoraBell · 28/04/2022 21:36

£30 for fish and chips? That’s bloody outrageous.

Well done on the coffee front Nat, that should help him to persuade him to save money on other things too, maybe taking lunch instead of buying it, if that’s relevant.

This is one I could live with, as I assume the eggs weren't too pricey to start with.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/04/2022 21:44

MibsXX · 28/04/2022 22:31

"how can you possibly only give people one possible way to pay for something and then make them pay for the 'privilege' of paying for it?"

Three words.... utility PREPAYMENT meters ...................

NigelFaragesfrontroom · 28/04/2022 23:54

Fish and chips last ordered 8 weeks ago up over £3 . Not sure how much delivery has increased as I cancelled the order . I honestly put as much thought into the purchase as I used to into buying a book or makeup . I had been out all day , was tired , cold and didn’t feel like cooking .I had scrambled egg on toast . Still
luckier than many and it is no hardship really but how are small businesses to survive ?

Nat6999 · 29/04/2022 00:40

Adorabell He uses the train on a Thursday afternoon to get to NHS Cadets & at least once during the week to get to Green Party events he is involved in. If he is going anywhere further on his train buff travels he goes first class & gets a discount through his disabled railcard & gets free food & drink included, he worked out with the discount & the free food & drink it isn't much more than a standard ticket & he often gets free vouchers in compensation if trains are missing or delayed.

XingMing · 29/04/2022 14:15

@mycatisannoying , the new price is £2.50 per dozen, and they are the best, freshest eggs, straight from the hens. Not complaining! I don't grudge the producer the proper price.

XingMing · 29/04/2022 14:17

But it's more than a 12% increase, and supports my opinion that inflation is much closer to 15% than 6%.
