The book or books that bring back comforting and happy memories.

Mine are Magic Faraway Tree, Mallory Towers and St Clares, all by Enid Blyton.

What are yours?

I liked The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

midsomermurderess · 13/04/2022 21:12

The Three Brothers of Ur. And a peculiar, creepy book about a girl, in the language of the times, an invalid, living in a house on a remote area, and as she drew the house, the house became alive. That's my hazy recollection. Does that ring any bells with anyone?

Courante · 13/04/2022 21:13

Brown Mouse by Frank Jennens - I think it was my step mother’s book (b.1926). I don’t remember that much from my childhood but I remember enjoying this book a lot.

KendallRoysRabbit · 13/04/2022 21:14

And almost forgot Judy Blume!!

Another poster mentioned Goodnight Mr Tom - I had fond memories of this book too and bought it on audiobook for my DSs (at the time 9&11) on a long car journey. Forgot how horrific the themes were and spent the entire time trying to turn it off Shock

DC were fine and really enjoyed it.

Whatkatyforgottodo · 13/04/2022 21:14

I loved The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell when I was about 10. Then Alana: The first adventure by Tamara Pierce and Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings when I was 12. Also all Enid Blyton and Tolkien.

midsomermurderess · 13/04/2022 21:15

Oh yes, The family at one end street. And Stig of the Dump

BasiliskStare · 13/04/2022 21:16

So lovely to see all these books - when I was young - yes the Weirdstone of Brisingamen and the Dark is rising series. The Owl Service was properly hairs on the back of the neck for me.

Have got this right "What Katy did " and "what Katy did next " as I recall she went to Naples when there was an illness there.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/04/2022 21:17

The Sophie's Seven collection. The first one I ever read (heard) was Sophie's seven so that's what they're called to me but I think the first one is from when she was four?

Wonderful stories and now I know all about snails and rub the end of my nose when I think 🤣

5foot5 · 13/04/2022 21:18

yes to all saying Magic Faraway Tree! And anything Enid Blyton - Mallory, famous five etc etc.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 13/04/2022 21:22

When I was very small I loved the Gwyneth Rae books. I remember my parents taking me to Foyles and I can still remember the excitement of reading the first line myself. Visiting Granny I loved her to read "Junk the Puppy" which had been dad's when he was a child.

I loved Paddington, A A Milne, Narnia, Mallory Towers and the Chalet School throughout primary school.

Tezza1 · 13/04/2022 21:22

Was going to say The Adventure Books series by Enid Blyton, but I think overall I much preferred Jane Shaw's Susan books. These are probably more suitable for older children, 9+.
