To not think Aylesbury is the worst town in the UK.

I mean. It’s not the best place in the UK, but hardly the worst!

www.countryliving.com/uk/homes-interiors/property/a38671598/worst-places-to-live-uk/

I grew up in Oxford, I’d say blackbird leys and Witney are worse.

I’ve visited Luton and driven through Slough.

I’ve lived in Aylesbury for 12 years, and other than the traffic, it’s not that much of a bad place! Having read an article about someone stabbed in MK recently, it got me wondering why on Earth it’s so awful!

Can't believe Liverpool is on that list!

coronafiona · 13/04/2022 21:15

Dunstable is one massive polluted traffic jam.

Thatgingergirl · 13/04/2022 21:16

ScrambledSmegs I think Dunstable is better than Aylesbury because there's less of it! The good bit (the Priory) is easily found! If they got rid of that monstrous concrete tower block near the main junction, it would be better.

I actually find quite a lot of the major chain shops/cafes to be far more useful & practical when living somewhere rather than visiting it

I totally agree. Much prefer chain shops. Independents are all very well but often have poor returns policies and capricious opening hours.

I don't know Aylesbury well but have driven through it a few times and have always thought it was ok. Lots of cycle paths but less boring than MK. There are certainly far worse places.

yellowsuninthesky · 13/04/2022 21:44

@x2boys

I see Bolton has made the list and I don't disagree the bit I live in is a shit hole ,and the some of the town centre leaves a lot to be desired, but like most large towns it has it,s good bits .
I read an article about Bolton a few years ago saying that a lot of the problem was that Manchester was sucking up all the investment and the satellite towns like Bolton were missing out.

However the Times "best places to live" mentioned Farnworth as an up and coming place which surprised me somewhat.

SerialNameChanger2114 · 13/04/2022 21:44

There is ALOT of cycle paths. That said, the cyclists aren’t on the road so that’s a good thing surely. The traffic situation is bad enough already

Sorry I meant the cycle paths were a good thing. I thought someone would say "but MK has them too" which was why I said it is more boring than Aylesbury,
JaceLancs · 13/04/2022 21:48

I’m surprised Skelmersdale didn’t make the list high up either

yellowsuninthesky · 13/04/2022 21:49

That article is wrong. Stroud didn't win the Times "best places to live", Ilkley did.

garlictwist · 13/04/2022 21:54

I've never even heard of Aylesbury so it can't be that notorious

Crikeyalmighty · 13/04/2022 22:05

I partly agree but have to vehemently disagree with Liverpool which I love— I like it better than Manchester!!!

My list having travelled around a lot with work is

Stoke on Trent
Stafford
Willenhall/wednesbury /dudley /Wolverhampton conurbation ( in fact I would plonk vast swathes of the West Midlands in there) —
Rotherham
Clacton on Sea /Jaywick
burnham on Sea/ Weston super Mare
Harlow
Luton
Slough
Barnsley
Preston
Blackburn
Swindon
Chatham
sittingbourne

In fact to be honest vast swathes of the UK are bloody awful - it would be easier to pick out nice places.

inmyslippers · 13/04/2022 22:09

I can't believe Blackpool, Blackburn and Accrington didn't make the list

autumnkate · 13/04/2022 22:13

I lived in Slough until I was about 22- it got a lot worse towards the end and is a good bit worse than that now

Toadsinholes · 13/04/2022 22:19

Aylesbury is my local town and it is indeed a shithole. It’s so UGLY. That big fucking AVDC council block thing, the depressing Friars Square shopping bit, the high st is chavvy as fuck, that nasty Weatherspoons, loads of loads of ugly houses. Not to mention the world’s worst new housing estate ever - fucking Berryfields, huge pylons in people’s back gardens & that road called Paradise Orchard when there’s not a tree in sight and just ugly sprawling over-priced houses.
The surrounding countryside is boring, scrubby & flat flood plains.
I hate it. There are no redeeming features to it at all, except maybe Aquavale which has a decent leisure & competition pool. But that’s it.

MywobblyBottom · 13/04/2022 22:19

OP get to fuck with your rude comments about Witney!

Bunnycat101 · 13/04/2022 22:25

It shouldn’t be number 1. a more realistic list would be to take the most deprived towns from the ONS data set. I’d bet Aylesbury is not in the bottom 50.

StoneofDestiny · 13/04/2022 22:31

Some of the grimmest places are
Huddersfield
Oldham
Dewsbury
Blackpool

MissDollyMix · 13/04/2022 22:32

Ah but some ‘deprived’ towns have a lot of character and a lot going on, it’s not as simple as looking an index of deprivation. I say that as someone who has lived in Hull. Also familiar with Aylesbury and I would agree with OP. It’s not amazing but it’s far from being the worst. Luton or Watford are both total shit holes which given their size and proximity to London should be much nicer than they are. Or any of the indistinct towns in the middle of nowhere with a shuttered up high street and no culture whatsoever. I won’t name names because I’ll no doubt offend great swathes of mumsnetters but about 80% towns I visit depress me these days.

SerialNameChanger2114 · 13/04/2022 22:33

@Toadsinholes

Come over to the nice bit the other side 😂

I can see Coombe Hill from my balcony over in the post bit.

Posh* not post 🙄

OP posts:
StScholastica · 13/04/2022 22:36

Can I add a few curved balls?
Bridport. Shit hole of a place full of pretend upper middle class, bigots.
Spalding, full of National front types.
Totnes, just a massive traffic jam.
Rhyl, great for openly dealing drugs along the promenade.
Iona, pretty but so weird, must have been nice before the unfriendly Christian community took it over.

DoreenWinkings · 13/04/2022 22:38

It's quite subjective isn't it.

When I was in my teens Aylesbury had a reputation for being rough and we used to trek down there if we wanted to dance and get fucked and have noone query how old we were...

That said my H went to Grammar in Aylesbury (I went in Beaconsfield) and I wouldnt say our backgrounds were dissimilar - if anything his is nicer than mine?

I certainly wouldn't have put nowadays Aylesbury in a worst places to live list.

That said, we now live in last year's 'Best Place to Live' and my first thought when I heard that was that they definitely hadn't been up to the top of town...

So I guess it depends who you ask, and which bit you visit, nd realistically if you like where you live who cares (it's not like house prices in Aylesbury are through the floor or ever will be, it's solid commuter belt)

saggyhairyass · 13/04/2022 22:40

Anyone been to Corby? Don't.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/04/2022 22:44

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Mansfield yet! @StScholastica I had the pleasure of going to Spalding for the first time last week and even that isn't as bad as Mansfield
