To not think Aylesbury is the worst town in the UK.

I mean. It’s not the best place in the UK, but hardly the worst!

www.countryliving.com/uk/homes-interiors/property/a38671598/worst-places-to-live-uk/

I grew up in Oxford, I’d say blackbird leys and Witney are worse.

I’ve visited Luton and driven through Slough.

I’ve lived in Aylesbury for 12 years, and other than the traffic, it’s not that much of a bad place! Having read an article about someone stabbed in MK recently, it got me wondering why on Earth it’s so awful!

Have they never visited Chatham?

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 13/04/2022 17:15

I don’t have an opinion on Aylesbury as I don’t think I’ve ever been there but wtf is Liverpool doing on that list?! Birkenhead should definitely be there but not Liverpool!

Luton definitely deserves to be there. Probably number 1 in fact.

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/04/2022 17:15

I can think of far, far worse than Aylesbury.

The Waterside Theatre is one of the best around - every seat is decent, and they have a good range of shows on.

NewPapaGuinea · 13/04/2022 17:22

Aylesbury is fine. Whilst it’s not the nicest it’s certainly not the worst. Close to London, Chiltern hills, canals, Waddesdon Manor etc. Town itself has a decent cinema, theatre, independent restaurants (The Grill and New York Deli being personal favourites) and pubs.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 13/04/2022 17:22

Aylesbury is a typical commuter town that had sprawled (its all the flat Buckinghamshire countryside so easy to build on!). But most of it is perfectly fine.
Have any of them been to Luton?

Soundoftheunderground · 13/04/2022 17:30

@bubblesbubbles11

noted Serial. I didn't really mean to slag SMH off, it was just the contrast struck me, that was all. And I did go to SMH for something completely different from the reason I was at the Churchill so I accept there is some don't-compare-apples-and-pears about my comment.
@bubblesbubbles11 Theatres and Recovery at Stoke Mandeville are the best around… yes I’m biased.

Yanbu. I’ve been to much worse places. Aylesbury is alright!!

MajesticElephant · 13/04/2022 17:33

There is much worse than Aylesbury and I pretty much dislike the place apart from the theatre and leisure pool. Whoever said a Hemel was worse has obviously not spent any time there! Luton and Dunstable are pretty dire too. Parts of Luton I wouldn’t go in the day time, even safety locked in my car passing through.

Imperfectp3rf3ction · 13/04/2022 17:41

I think there's some not so nice parts but I genuinely think it's a lovely place to live. Never been hassled or harrased here ( which is a rarity compared to other places ) There's just enough to do and easy access to high Wycombe watford Milton Keynes ect if you want a bit more to do.

You really cannot compare Witney to Blackbird leys. I was born in BBL and moving to Witney as a teen was another world.
Christienne · 13/04/2022 17:47

The same poll rated Stroud as the best place to live in the UK.

‘Nuff said.

elliejjtiny · 13/04/2022 17:48

I lived in Aylesbury for the first 20 years of my life. It's fine, mostly quite nice actually, and doesn't deserve to be top of that list. It has the grammar school system which is awful but I can't think of much else wrong with it.

Hemel isn't too bad. Gets a, largely undeserved, bad rep.
LocalHobo · 13/04/2022 17:49

I had many a great evenings out at Friars in Aylesbury, a while back I will admit, but I associate the town with safe, fun nights out.
My family is from Bath and MNetters makes me chortle when they refer to that city in entirely glowing terms. Likewise Oxford, where certain (already mentioned) areas are no-go for my service providers. As previously stated, all places of any size have good and bad.
Luton is an easy target.

CuteOrangeElephant · 13/04/2022 17:53

Huddersfield is surely a more worthy number 1. It's absolutely dreadful.

SimplyAmy1 · 13/04/2022 17:55

I’m also from
Aylesbury and think there are much worse places too !

UsernameInTheTown · 13/04/2022 17:57

Whoever compiled this list has clearly never been to Northamptonshire. Kettering, Wellingborough, Corby, not to mention Northampton. Turd holes. Utter turd holes.

leotardrock · 13/04/2022 18:02

I think it's the traffic which is absolutely awful! It can take about 45 mins to go 3 miles during rush hour!

I live quite near to the town centre & can easily walk to the cinema & the theatre!

Some great independent restaurants opened lately, the shopping is ok for your average Saturday afternoon but it's easy enough to get on the train to London, drive to Milton Keynes or actually the bus to Oxford was a 5er return the last time I got on it !

I really don't think it's the worst place to live although ask me again when the HS2 works are finished! 🙁

AngelsWithSilverWings · 13/04/2022 18:02

@SerialNameChanger2114 we visited because a band we love come from there and they were playing a tiny little gig in the town.

SuziLikeSuziQ · 13/04/2022 18:05

I'm always amazed Huntingdon doesn't come up on these kind of lists. Even when I was growing up and it was a shithole, it never appeared. No idea if it's any better now - I haven't been back in about a decade.

SierraSapphire · 13/04/2022 18:07

Corby is on the list, though IMO Kettering and Northampton town centres are worse.

Surely Jaywick is the worst though.

Phos · 13/04/2022 18:10

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

Marginally prefer Peterborough to Aylesbury and the others - but non of those listed are totally shit imho - as mentioned by PP Luton would be pretty high up my list.

I've spent a lot of time in Aylesbury and actually lived in Peterborough.

There are some lovely areas of Peterborough. My cousin lives in Hampton and I'm quite jealous, its a nice little community.
AngelsWithSilverWings · 13/04/2022 18:10

Re the stabbing mentioned earlier.

My town has just been voted one of the beat towns to live in in the East of England. Previously voted the happiest town in the UK and also voted the second best costal town to live in a few years ago.

Last year a teenager was murdered in broad daylight outside a pub and a father was killed in the high st while out with his children. And that's before we mention the murder of our MP. All towns have their issues even the "naice" ones.

Ilovesandwiches · 13/04/2022 18:10

I’m originally from Aylesbury and now live on the Isle of Wight. We had a lot of experience with antisocial behaviour whilst living there which is why we ended up moving here. I wouldn’t say it was one of the best but I’m sure there are far more places a lot worse than Aylesbury!

Phos · 13/04/2022 18:11

I was there yesterday. It's not nice but I think it's marginally better than Luton or Dunstable which have been mentioned.

Going to put one out there, it's a small town so I don't know how well known it is further afield but Dewsbury is a complete dump.

x2boys · 13/04/2022 18:11

I see Bolton has made the list and I don't disagree the bit I live in is a shit hole ,and the some of the town centre leaves a lot to be desired, but like most large towns it has it,s good bits .
