So Boris and Rishi both been issed Fixed Penalty Notices for attending illegal gatherings.

Maybe we'll get the Sue Gray report now.

At the very least parliament can be recalled for a no confidence vote. But that would rely on tory mps not being cowards, so... eh.

Blossomtoes · 12/04/2022 14:36

Well then he should get more than one fine - one for each offence, surely?

Apparently he will. A fine for every breach of the rules. This joke of a government is just imploding. One of their red wall MPs has just been convicted for sexual assault.

It seems the Tory party loathes Truss so God knows what will happen if the present incumbent of No 10 is kicked out.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2022 14:37

@SleeplessInEngland

Feels like an interesting moment for the country. The first time a sitting PM has broken the law (and been caught). The degree to which we tolerate it will set a hell of a precedent.

Expect to hear a lot of "there are bigger things to worry about now" and "we've moved on" from the conservatives, of course.

Yep. The gaslighting will continue.

And I agree this sets a precedence.

It seems that ,any of the British electorate are so disenfranchised with our politics and politicians they really will just shrug and accept it as the norm.

It will be very interesting to see how Tory MPs respond to this.
itsgettingweird · 12/04/2022 14:38

@SleeplessInEngland

Apparenlty Johnson's team 'don't even know which events he's being fined for'...
Which just proves he attended more than one 🤦‍♀️
DrManhattan · 12/04/2022 14:39

WTF just quit already you absolute wasters

LauraNicolaides · 12/04/2022 14:40
@LauraNicolaides, there is every need for a general election. Those at the very top of our government have breached the trust that the public placed in them when they were elected. Those responsible for making the law have undermined the rule of law. And the Prime Minister has brazenly lied to Parliament.

The fundamental contract between the government and the public has been broken, and they need to go. En masse.
We don't elect a government though. I'm very doubtful that Johnson will go, although I'm sure he should. I can guarantee that there will not be an election, and there is no need for one constitutionally.

I hope he doesn’t go. I want the Tories to be unelectable for a decade at least.

This.

It's not enough for the idiots that vote for them, unfortunately. Let the scandals continue.....

AlexaShutUp · 12/04/2022 14:49

I completely agree that there won't be one. However, I disagree that there is no need for one. Constitutionally, there is no precedent for this in any case.

I very much doubt that Boris will have the decency to resign. So we are depending on Tory MPs to do the right thing, which is a pretty frightening place to be.

Changechangychange · 12/04/2022 15:00

A fine for every breach of the rules.

He won’t be paying them himself. There must be loads of “donors” who’ll pay in exchange for favours from the government. Number 10 is probably taking bids now.

LauraNicolaides · 12/04/2022 15:03

However, I disagree that there is no need for one. Constitutionally, there is no precedent for this in any case.

There's a huge Tory majority in the House of Commons and they can easily choose another leader who would become PM. Whatever awful things the PM may have done, the only people who elected him and should maybe get another bite at the cherry, were the Conservative Party and the electors of Uxbridge. They might conceivably get a by-election. But I wouldn't hold your breath!

I don't know by what mechanism you'd think a general election might be called?

Blossomtoes · 12/04/2022 15:05

It might get just too difficult for our esteemed PM and he calls one in the hope someone else will be left holding the poisoned chalice.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/04/2022 15:06

There's a chain of events that could allow for a by-election in his constituency.

I'm not sure if you are deliberately misunderstanding what I'm saying or whether you just aren't reading it properly.

I have already made it very clear that I am not expecting a general election. I know that there is no mechanism for calling one. That's beside the point.

What I'm saying is that morally, I think we need a general election as our current government is in tatters. I fully understand that we have a large Tory majority and that we're stuck with them. I just wish that our constitution did have a mechanism for booting out a party that has been led by a bunch of law-breakers while the rest of their MPs shrugged and turned a blind eye.

EyePeeEh · 12/04/2022 15:20

I’m interested to see how much the British public cares.

He should absolutely resign, but I don’t see that happening unless there’s immense pressure, and unfortunately think there’s a bit out outrage fatigue.

Partygate was catastrophic for tory polling, so it's fair to say the public cares.

However, what really matters is whether the owners of the Sun, Telegraph and Mail care. Once they've decided they've had enough of him, he's gone. And I wouldn't bet on tomorrow's front pages being that bad from those outlets.

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 12/04/2022 16:00

I don't want Boris to resign.

I want him in power when the next general election is held. I want him to be faced with images of him partying in election materials and I want to see his face when the Tories inevitably lose.

If he resigns now we get a fresh new Tory to replace him and then there's a good chance the electorate will forgive and forget and vote these fuckwits back in for another five years.

(In before: "But Kier Starmer doesn't know what a woman is.").

I think there is a strong chance that the Tories will decide to keep him now, while they ride out the cost of living crisis, and then they will kick him out before the next election to replace him with someone whose brand is untarnished by the painful period that we're about to go through. So Boris will survive in the short term as he will be a convenient scapegoat to take the blame for what's about to hit us.
GreenNewDealNow · 12/04/2022 16:03

20-30 years ago he would have resigned but the moral standards seem to have relaxed considerably in recent years. Corruption is rife in this government and they aren't held to account adequately.

HardyBuckette · 12/04/2022 16:05

I don't see Rishi hanging around for long given the tax and green card situations, so it's possible they might try and present him as the sacrificial lamb.

Tillerman · 12/04/2022 16:06

Still think he’s going to ride it out, he’s like a cockroach.

I think you are spot on with this one. Rishi’s fall from grace is pretty complete now. He was popular for a time but just doesn’t have the “but that’s just good old Boris” routine to fall back on.

Sunak will go (probably resign). My money would be on Gove as Chancellor.

Johnson will cling on. He is currently in his absolute element. Making himself look like a wartime leader (but by proxy so he doesn’t have to send our soldiers to war).

We won’t see much of Carrie over the coming months. Perhaps photos of her and the children during a platinum jubilee event. But that will be it.

Laska2Meryls · 12/04/2022 16:21

its ok ,

Michael Fabricant says that there's Nothing to see here..... What Bozzer has done is just like "just like many teachers and nurses who after a very, very long shift would tend to go back to the staff room and have a quiet drink". .. Yup... that's a direct quote..Shock
