I can't pay rent this month.

Not an aibu, but yeah..

April hasn't been kind to me, everything seems to have broke, needs replaced, renewed etc. Topped off by someone crashing into my car, writing it off and driving off today. I live payday to payday pretty much as is, I'm a single parent as DH sadly passed away and it's been tough getting back on my feet since then.

My rent is due soon and I just don't think I can afford it. I know no one can really answer this, but how likely is it they will want me to leave if I ask to pay a couple of weeks late? I'll get paid again soon and the car insurance will have paid out, so it's not I can't afford rent at all, just I can't right not.
The feeling of seeing less than my rent money in my bank is making me so stressed but u just Don't know how else I can solve this Sad

Your uncle sounds lovely. It’s unfortunate that your family are in financial straits too.
Maybe you have friends who can help?

AprilistheWorst · 11/04/2022 00:00

I am already in receipt of any benefits I'm entitled to.
I should be fine for next month again. Its just everything a happened at once, which just upset the balance I guess.
The car cheque will pay the arrears, plus some back in my now depleted savings (hopefully!)
I have a friend who has very kindly agreed to help with child care in summer (a teacher) so that will also help get back on track. I Really should just be a one off.

Horrid comment

You'll be fine. No landlord will evict over a two week late rent delay for a previously good tenant. Explain what's going on (supply proof), pay as soon as you can, move on with your life.

TheGirlWhoLived · 11/04/2022 00:03

Up the sob story!? “I can’t make rent my family are all unable to help I’ve been in a car accident I’m waiting for money back my elderly uncle can’t help any more

To be fair posts about financial struggles, especially late at night when moderation is patchy, are not always as they may seem!

Really? A horrible comment to be suspicious of someone asking for money from the internet?

viques · 11/04/2022 00:05

If you have been a clean, considerate and reliable tenant for two years I think the agency will want to hang on to you, as will the landlord, they won’t want to go to the expense and hassle of eviction, re decorating, re advertising, vetting new applications, and hoping against hope they get a decent tenant at the end of it for the sake of waiting a couple of weeks for your rent. By all means offer them an interim payment to show good faith, but if you can speak to them first thing and explain the situation I think they will listen.

Great news about the car, well done Uncle GirlWhoLived.

whynotwhatknot · 11/04/2022 00:05

doesnt matter what they put in a contract they cant evict you that soon

it has to go through the courts and that takes months and you would have paid by then so wouldnt be worth their time

GrazingSheep · 11/04/2022 00:06

Hopefully people are a lot less gullible…

viques · 11/04/2022 00:07

Sorry, got the wrong name! Well done Uncle Aprilistheworst.

Hope this sort of thing never happens to you GirlWhoLived.

TheGirlWhoLived · 11/04/2022 00:09

Thanks @MurielSpriggs … particularly as a first time poster, I would like to echo the time old mnhq reply of “never give more than you can financially or emotionally afford”

Too old in the tooth if not in years to see this same old game time and time again

It did actually. Please search my history, some decent advice for the predicament I was in (including councils to contact and debt advice). Alas I can certainly say I was in more of a predicament than being 2 weeks late with rent. I do hope op sorts herself with the advice here. I’m not a horrible person, merely suspicious
AprilistheWorst · 11/04/2022 00:13

I haven't asked anyone for money, just what the liklihood of me being evicted is from paying rent late...
The other details are more context, that I'm not struggling to pay rent cause I'm careless with money. FWIW, I've posted under multiple usernames, which MN can check..
Thankyou all those who have put my mind at ease, ill email the estate agents and explain what's going on.

Then sure, I’ve been in that position a fair amount of times and I’ve never found a landlord (particularly an agent for a landlord) that would mind you being honest. Say unfortunately this months rent will be two weeks late, as will next months. From x date we will be on track, thank you so much for your consideration in this matter.

Dozycuntlaters · 11/04/2022 00:17

Sorry things are so difficult for you at rye moment and sorry to hear about your DH

Agree with other posters, speak to
Your letting agent tomorrow and explain the situation. When I was a LL I had this a couple of times and it was no problem. As long as the tenant kept me in the loop and didn't just not pay I was always understanding. If you're a good tenant, and it sounds like you are, he's not going to serve you a section 21 just for one late payment.

Well which are you, a first time poster, or a poster with a history!

As far as I can see people are only offering advice, which is free.

saleorbouy · 11/04/2022 00:19

Speak to the landlord and pay what you can on rent day and the remainder ASAP.
You can't get instantly evicted and if you let them know the reasons you are struggling this month at least they will perhaps understand a bit.

TheGirlWhoLived · 11/04/2022 00:21

Ah you misread… particularly as the op is a first time poster (although has later clarified that she has many other names)

I’m really old. Dd is now 11 and I joined when pregnant. Although I’ve had two names now- the other is TheImprobableGirl - I mostly hang around the Christmas board and it got a smidge confusing with another user with a similar name, so I swapped Smile

TheGirlWhoLived · 11/04/2022 00:22

Sorry I mean my nom de plume is anyfucker

Perhaps that will give my posts more clout?

MyCommentWasDeleted · 11/04/2022 00:24

I feel for you but you were married, with child, husband died and had no insurance or back up in place? Life policy? Pension?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/04/2022 00:24

You need 2 months arrears for a section 8, if you are outside your fixed period a s21 is also an option but it’s a lot of hassle to evict a tenant so generally not worth it over delayed payment.

Speak to your LL. If our tenants said the rent would be late due to waiting for insurance after a car accident we would be sympathetic given your previous history of paying on time.

OP What has taken the money you would usually spend on rent this month? You mention the car crash, and I can see that that’s dramatic, but it’s not clear how that has caused you cash flow problems as you haven’t gone out and bought a new car before the insurance has paid out.

Is the insurance payment really going to pull you into the black and leave you in solid(ish) place, or do you have too many expenses month to month for your current income? I’m just trying to get you to have a candid look at your finances because the sooner you correct a more out than in financial situation, the less pain there is.

(Though to answer your actual question - I agree with others, the landlord won’t evict you for being a little bit late with the rent, though it’s not a good situation to be in. And the best way to deal with it is to be up front with the agency. But if this isn’t going to be sorted out long term by the car insurance payment, you need to look at a way to cut expenses or raise income ASAP.)

HRTQueen · 11/04/2022 00:29

As other have said contact letting agents tomorrow these things happen landlords have to take this into account

I would pay what you can the day rent is due and the rest when you can pay

This will be happening a lot in the coming year the landlord should be insured for unpaid rent

Hope all works out ok my tenants have at times paid late it happens I appreciate they inform me beforehand
