To miss genuine veggie food

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 18:08

In the light of all the vegan options coming out, what's happened to veggie food? Granted veggies can eat vegan but I want real cheese or mayo on my burger instead of the fake stuff.

Not even allowed to add a coffee to a 'vegan' meal at burger king, I assume because of the milk. Had to pay separately.

Just having a moan. It's annoying as hell. Anyone else?

I am also allergic to most nuts and legumes unless they are very well cooked. If I saw 'Vegan butter' on a menu I would have recently assumed margarine but now know it can be a blend of nuts too. I read somewhere (can't remember where but it was 'proper' Grin) that anyone with a legume allergy needs to be cautious with pea proteins in fake meat as they can trigger an allergic reaction due to the high amount. I've never been able to have alpro soya things for this reason.

Bean chilli with sour cream and grated cheese
Veg lasagne
Goats cheese tarts
Chickpea curries with a dollop of yogurt
I miss you all!

elp30 · 10/04/2022 20:38

I'm not vegetarian but I can't eat dairy so I tolerate fake cheese but I want real pepperoni on my pizza and not some weird fake pepperoni.

Sundance5 · 10/04/2022 20:45

The most annoying part is that you pay the same price as the meat, get hardly any carbs and it's super boring food! Agree with a previous poster that Asian food is soooo much better as vegan food than pub / European offerings. But I agree bring back the vegetarian options

I am a fussy veggie. Totally get why people are vegan, absolutely support it but personally I don't like a lot of the vegan options, and the veggie options have definitely diminished to be replaced with vegan options - we need both.

Bpdqueen · 10/04/2022 20:47

I completely agree I ordered a vegan burger from just eat and wrote in the comment box to swap vegan cheese and vegan mayo for real stuff and the take away ended up ringing me because they was so confused by my order and I had to explain im not vegan just vegetarian so I want the real cheese and mayo

NOTANUM · 10/04/2022 20:54

I agree with this. The vegetarian option used to be a feta cheese and spinach tart or omelette with salad - beautiful. Now it’s high processed vegan burgers with a side of chips.
In an effort to be more inclusive I think vegetarian food has become less healthy and processed.

Pitafalafel · 10/04/2022 20:55

Yep, being vegetarian at 90% of cafes and restaurants in the 90s and 00s it was: “meat, meat, meat … CHEESE”.

Now it’s: “meat, meat, meat, meat … WEIRD FRANKENSTEIN CHEEZ PROTEIN”

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 20:57

Frankencheez!

MsJinks · 10/04/2022 20:57
@MsJinks I agree!
When I ask if they have gluten free options they tell me they do vegan..which as you know is really really not the same. Dairy free biscuits are not the same either. I want butter in my cakes and biscuits and I want real chocolate in my cookies.
Oh yes - real chocolate- I’m only diagnosed about 4 years and my daughter has taken some time to grasp it - I have had vegan cheese, a non chocolate advent calendar and a dairy free Easter egg - kind of her and I appreciate it but saddened me 🤦🏻‍♀️ Mind Frankie and benny’s were surprised I could have cheese on a gf pasta dish before - brought it out without any.

redredredredlorry · 10/04/2022 21:00

I agree. I went to a chicken restaurant with friends recently (not my choice) and had checked the menu online beforehand to see they had battered halloumi nuggets as a vegetarian alternative. When we got there and I tried to order them, I was told the halloumi had been replaced by a 'vegan chicken substitute'. I don't like the taste or texture of meat, I don't want to eat something that is pretending to be meat

Crikeyalmighty · 10/04/2022 21:00

I love really good veggie food (I’m not veggie) but yet to have anything vegan in either a restaurant or ready meal that wasn’t bloody nasty — I make a really nice grilled aubergine in miso paste with sesame seeds, spring onions and crunchy fried onions on top (I think it was woman’s and home recipe) that you have on rice— now thats delicious.

wejammin · 10/04/2022 21:04

I think it's worth pointing out that this is not the vegans' fault but lazy and tight manufacturers and restaurant owners who are trying to reduce costs by having one common 'free from' denominator option.

I'm vegan and I hate the fact that there is usually never a vegan salad option in restaurants, they're always chicken and bacon or ploughman's etc, if you ask for a vegan salad you'll get a bowl of lettuce and a few sad tomatoes. Presumably fresh veggies, avocado, houmous, beans etc are more expensive than cheap meat?

I hate it when the vegan option is gluten free, give me gluten!

When I find somewhere that gets it right - fresh, healthy, tasty food, I will be a regular visitor! In terms of chains I think wagamama does a great job.

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave

You don't need cheese or mayo to make a "genuine" meal. What a weird choice of words.
If you like them, yes you do. 'Genuine' can apply to individuals and isn't necessarily universal
Patented · 10/04/2022 21:12

You're correct, but why do you have to be so derogatory towards vegan food - 'fake' - it's hardly made of plastic, in order to make your point? You can make a point without putting others down, you do realise

Velvian · 10/04/2022 21:14

Completely agree, I've been veggie for 30 years and it is very frustrating. I hate the fake meat. I want a bean burger or nut burger with proper cheese and mayo. Not something that I'm suspicious of.

BaileysBreakfast · 10/04/2022 21:14

YANBU. I’m a lifelong veggie who can’t survive without cheese and yogurt. I was given a fake cheese wrap the other day :(

You do realise that lots of biscuits in the supermarket are dairy free and vegan right? Jammy dodgers and bourbons come to mind.

I am not sure why you think vegan cookies wouldn’t have real chocolate in either. What exactly do you think chocolate is?

LennyAndTheDucks · 10/04/2022 21:25

@MsJinks what is a non-chocolate advent calendar? Confused

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 21:26

With ‘stuff’ in it (little toys or cosmetics). Or Candy Kittens

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/04/2022 21:29

@Suzi888 it’s not “sensitivity”, it’s that it’s rude for those who don’t agree with dairy-eating to hijack a thread about how people want to be able to eat dairy.

ColourMeExhausted · 10/04/2022 21:29

Oh I hear you OP! So bloody annoying! Been a veggie since 1993 and am very annoyed with the wave of veganism messing up our menu choices!

LennyAndTheDucks · 10/04/2022 21:31

I see.

Not sure why the kid couldn’t have had an a dairy free chocolate advent calendar though. Plenty of dark chocolate is accidentally vegan and there are lots of vegan ‘milk’ chocolate available. As long as the chocolate has cacao (cocoa solids or cocoa butter) listed in the ingredients then it is just as real as any chocolate with cows milk in.

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 21:33

Some kids don’t like chocolate though. DS hated the stuff until he was about 10. My nephew doesn’t like it either (he gets a candy kitten advent calendars from aunty kitten)

StrawberrySquash · 10/04/2022 21:34

YANBU. I'm a meat eater who likes veggie food, but when eating out I've actually started ordering the meat more often because the veggie/vegan option doesn't appeal. I like eggs, cheese and pulses. I'm not interested in fake food when I could be eating real food. I eat enough junk that is junk I want. I'm happy for the vegans but it's ironic it's making me eat more meat.
