Since when did carrots become part of Easter

Carrot decorations, even carrot chocolates and eggs and hats on water bonnets. AIBU, but apart from something a rabbit likes, they aren't even spring vegetables. I think they should get their own celebration, maybe try to muscle in on Halloween being orange and an autumn crop. Leave Easter for the chicks and eggs.

Yeah, that's a really good point actually!

DrManhattan · 09/04/2022 20:25

Easter bunnies?

HiJenny35 · 09/04/2022 20:28

I think rabbits and carrots have always been a part of Easter as much as the chicks and eggs. Considering Easter isn't actually about chicks and eggs at all maybe don't let it bother you.

SouthOfFrance · 09/04/2022 20:29

What does the Easter Bunny eat if its not carrots?

5foot5 · 09/04/2022 20:30

Oh I hadn't noticed this had become a thing but I will look out for it now. You are right though.

Mind you what is a water bonnet? I am not up to speed on that one

SalmonEile · 09/04/2022 20:30

Maybe we’ll end up with some shite like we all have to leave glitter covered carrots out or the Easter bunny will tell Santa that the kids have all been naughty and shit in their Easter eggs
Are Easter eve boxes a thing yet? I need Easter pjs for my egg hunt, or perhaps matching Easter tracksuits could be a thing - look insta stylish as you whomp little Johnny out of the way and grab an egg

(Seriously though I love Easter really )

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 20:32

For the rabbit 1

DyingForACuppa · 09/04/2022 20:32

Easter is definitely about chicks and eggs and bunnies and carrots (and lambs, and ducklings, and tree blossom... etc) in this house.

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 20:33

Are those naff Easter trees still a thing?

eddiemairswife · 09/04/2022 20:33

What's wrong with hot cross buns and Simnel cake?

mistermagpie · 09/04/2022 20:35

My neighbours have got a load of carrot decorations on their front door just now - at first I didn't even know what it was supposed to represent! It's weird isn't it, because yes bunnies eat carrots (although, do they? Like, in the wild?) but as a stand-alone thing, the carrots don't really mean anything!

I also thought the chick/egg thing was about new life and wasn't the egg supposed to represent the stone rolling away from Jesus's cave? I'm not religious so this might not be right but somewhere in my head it sounds like something I've heard! So chick and egg stuff is logical.

Yotrotro · 09/04/2022 20:37

I don't think this is a new thing. I was a 90s kid and I vividly remember my mum buying chocolate covered baby carrots from Iceland as a new special edition Easter range in the hope that my brother would eat a vegetable Envy I think it actually made him prefer normal carrots! I also have an Easter bunny teddy with carrot Inc from back then!

DyingForACuppa · 09/04/2022 20:37

perhaps matching Easter tracksuits could be a thing

I'm going to get Mumsnet scorn but my kids do have Easter outfits every year - new 'spring' clothes because I think theres just something so nice about being finally out of dreary heavy winter clothes into brighter/lighter things!

Dameputtingonabraveface · 09/04/2022 20:41

I am not religious but live Easter due to it being a long' spring relaxed weekend to spend time together and relax. It is not Christmas mark 2. I saw Easter Eve boxes somewhere the other day and it was a real what the fuck moment. I am not religious but my family are, including many vicars a lay preachers. I was offended on their behalf- 'easter eve' is most definitely not a thing and for many Christian's the days leading up to Easter is the most solemn and important time. It certainly is not a commercial celebration.

MurmuratingStarling · 09/04/2022 20:41

Yeah, it's just an Easter bunny thing. 🥕 🐰

That sounds cute! Easter outfits! Grin
MurmuratingStarling · 09/04/2022 20:43

@mistermagpie I agree. Carrots just sitting there without bunnies seem odd!

Hobbes8 · 09/04/2022 20:43

I feel the same way about penguins and Christmas.

Sunshineandrainbow · 09/04/2022 20:44

Does anyone remember the Lindt chocolate carrots. They were perfect for hanging in trees on egg hunts!

SolasAnla · 09/04/2022 20:50

@SouthOfFrance

What does the Easter Bunny eat if its not carrots?
Cadbury's Creme Egg of course!
DrManhattan · 09/04/2022 20:50

@sunshineandrainbow
I never see those anymore they were v.good

greenmeansNogo · 09/04/2022 20:51

Bloody love an Easter tree just without carrot decorations.

Water bonnets are just my terrible mid ranting typo. I was trying to say I saw so many carrots on Easter bonnets at school 😬
