Since when did carrots become part of Easter

Carrot decorations, even carrot chocolates and eggs and hats on water bonnets. AIBU, but apart from something a rabbit likes, they aren't even spring vegetables. I think they should get their own celebration, maybe try to muscle in on Halloween being orange and an autumn crop. Leave Easter for the chicks and eggs.

@eddiemairswife

What's wrong with hot cross buns and Simnel cake?
I love hot cross buns, but can totally leave Simnel cake.

Torta pasqualina (with eggs!) is our traditional Easter food. Oh, and chocolate, of course.

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 21:00

Do you think they had carrots at the last supper?

LndnGrl · 09/04/2022 21:15

@SouthOfFrance

What does the Easter Bunny eat if its not carrots?
Easter eggs, of course Confused

@Hobbes8

I feel the same way about penguins and Christmas.
Grin

I think it's because penguins are pretty much always pictured in and around snow and ice. Ditto polar bears. And everyone associates snow and ice (and snowy scenes etc,) with Christmas. (In The Midlands, UK, where I live anyway.)

Funny really, because I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times there has been snow on the ground on Christmas Eve, (and Christmas day, and Boxing day,) in the last quarter of a century!!!

But yeah, I got a pack of Christmas cards several years ago, with a mixture of things in the snow... Including robins, stags, snowmen, penguins, polar bears, and even hedgehogs in the snow! Hedgehogs hibernate between October and March, so the chances of seeing THEM in the snow is near to zero! And what have ROBINS actually got to do with Christmas? Confused

All very odd!

My (real) rabbits used to love kale and fennel best.

They turned their noses up at carrots

I blame Rebecca Rabbit

Hobbes8 · 09/04/2022 21:36

@MurmuratingStarling but penguins live in the South Pole! They’re as far from Christmas as it’s possible to be!

SolasAnla · 09/04/2022 21:36

@MurmuratingStarling
Robins have 2 stories
a Christmas story
Keeping baby Jesus warm
And an Easter one
Blessed by the blood of Jesus

I like to buy Christmas cards with unexpected animals on. Dolphins was a good one.

Sbbhnfc · 09/04/2022 21:42

What does the Easter Bunny eat if its not carrots?

Cadbury's, sorry, Mondelez Caramel chocolate bars, of course.... (boom boom).

HollysBush · 09/04/2022 21:43

Ahh, that’s reminded me how in the early 00’s, DHs grandmother used to get the children new clothes at Easter (usually colourful bargains from B-Wise, do they still exist?). I thought it was great as we were so short of money.
Carrots? Yeah, not really an Easter thing I agree.

BabyofMine · 09/04/2022 21:50

Behold. I actually took a picture of this in Home Bargains because I was so shocked such a thing existed!

What's an egg token? This all seems a bit complicated.
MurmuratingStarling · 09/04/2022 21:52

An EASTER EVE box?! What fresh hell is this?! Shock

greenmeansNogo · 09/04/2022 21:54

Maybe I've missed that we need to leave a carrot out for the Easter bunny, a bit like we do for the reindeer at Christmas 😂

Easter clothes have been a thing in our family since I was a child. My grandparents used to buy my siblings and I dresses, cardigans and sandals or indeed money for a new outfit when we were teenagers.

My parents still do the same for my children.

HollysBush · 09/04/2022 21:55

It’ll be rabbit on the shelf next.

AChocolateOrangeaday · 09/04/2022 21:57

That will be the next thing, leaving a carrot out the night before Easter Sunday for the Bunny who has hopefully left eggs.

Ssh now, don’t give them ideas!!
