Wibu? Grating cheese and other unimportant things

chubbachub · 08/04/2022 20:57

Today was a particularly hard day with the kids and dinner sort of got away from us so Dh and I settled on having beans on toast with grated cheese on top.

The beans on toast part is fine and both parties are in agreement - toast, butter, beans(cooked in a pot for at least 5 minutes so most of the bean juice has absorbed).

Person A cuts a piece of cheese from the block and grates this cheese into a bowl and then takes from this bowl and places cheese on top of said beans/toast combo.

Person B grates cheese directly from the block over the top of the plated beans on toast. This makes a mess of cheese round the plate. Some of which is picked up and put on the toast and the rest cleaned up properly as part of later on washing up.

Who is being U? Which cheese grating camp are you in? Are there any silly things like this that your and your partner do differently and both thing yours is the right way?

I'm a deviant. I grate the cheese into the saucepan as the beans are cooking so the cheese melts completely.

GrapesThatThrive · 08/04/2022 21:42

You are both being unreasonable for putting butter on the toast...

Don't be absurd.

Another one who has never heard of Hendos but no way would I be putting Worcester sauce or anything of that ilk on beans on toast.

The plastic cheese grater with lid thingy is really the answer.

SeaToSki · 08/04/2022 21:42

Where is the bacon? Crispy streaky bacon. And a steaming mug of tea (has to be a mug if its with beans, toast cheese and bacon)

In terms of what order everything goes on, it doesnt matter too much, as long as there is some of everything left to go on my plate and the thieving bastards (dc) dont take it all first

BellePeppa · 08/04/2022 21:44

I hate baked beans🤭

purplesequins · 08/04/2022 21:45

cheese needs to go on top - and then under the grill for some colour.

and don't bother grating, slices are much easier and less messy. amd you get more cheese.

SquitMcJit · 08/04/2022 21:45

Hendos is indeed Henderson’s Relish.

Like Worcestershire sauce but better, and no anchiovies in it so suitable for vegetarians.

ineedafairygodmother · 08/04/2022 21:46

I grate the cheese directly into the pan with the beans (while heating) so that the cheese melts and gets mixed into all the beans Grin

RockAndRollerskate · 08/04/2022 21:47

When I used to have a dishwasher, method A would have been used. Now I have to hand wash the buggers, it’s the option that uses fewest dishes for everything.

SquitMcJit · 08/04/2022 21:48

I recommend googling Hendo's by The Everly Pregnant Brothers

Which will tell you everything you need to know.

Ohmnomnom · 08/04/2022 21:48

Why would you make an extra bowl dirty just to put the cheese in for a few seconds? Also, the correct method is toast, butter, beans (with a knob of butter and splash of milk added while cooking), grated cheese, then half a bottle of tabasco sauce drizzled on top.

I have fajitas in the oven for later but I want beans on toast now!

MrsWidgerysLodger · 08/04/2022 21:50

@FuckYouDebbie

You need some Hendos.

Fucking animals.

Found the fellow Sheffielder! Grin

Newestname002 · 08/04/2022 21:53

@JazzTheDog

You are both being unreasonable for putting butter on the toast...

Perfect order is toast, grated cheese, beans! Wink

I agree - but with an egg on top! 🌹

SirGawain · 08/04/2022 21:57

You are completely incompatible. You need to separate and find happiness with some who has the same values as yourself. Grin

Mariposista · 08/04/2022 22:01

It's cheese - neither is unreasonable. As long as it all gets tidied up and put away at the end. I personally grate into a bowl/plate as it's easier, but tend to grate too much so I can see the logic of grating directly over the food.

EmJay19 · 08/04/2022 22:02

DH is A, I am B though I am a superior grater and do not make any mess therefore saving in washing up

DomingoinLittleOakley · 08/04/2022 22:06

Both are wrong - cheese goes under the beans so it is melted by the bean-heat.

greenlynx · 08/04/2022 22:06

We’ve got a small one sided grater so each of us grates on his own beans, usually from the block.

JurasicPerks · 08/04/2022 22:07

Grate straight from the block, but onto a plate/into a bowl.
So neither of you got it right.
However, YAbothU as beans should be heated til warm. Over cooking them turns them to stodgy mush.

CrystalCoco · 08/04/2022 22:15

Really? Each to their own?

Friday evenings (or ANY evening) needs to be a bit more chill.

Who gives a monkeys, there are more interesting / rubbish things going on in everyone's lives, surely...

savehannah · 08/04/2022 22:20

If you cut off a piece of cheese to grate it surely you waste some because you can't grate all of it without grating your fingers?? I would always grate straight from the block for this reason. If I'm only doing a sprinkle of cheese on beans or similar I'd just grate straight onto the plate. If I'm grating a larger amount for a recipe eg cheese sauce, I use the plastic container that attaches to my grater.

Talipesmum · 08/04/2022 22:24

@TerrifiedandWorried

How can you miss the plate? Just grate it more carefully and job's a goodun
This!
savehannah · 08/04/2022 22:24

@ODFOx

If you grate cheese over hot things it gets a bit steamed and goes off more quickly.

Get one of those graters attached to a bowl /tub that you can seal. I never knew how much we needed one until we had one: perfect for grated cheese for beans, pasta, whatever, and f you grate a bit much you can seal it up for another day.

Cheese always gets eaten long before it goes off in this house so no need to worry about that for us. I grate straight over hot food all the time and never ever have mouldy cheese.
caffeinebuzz · 08/04/2022 22:27

Grate from the block into a separate bowl, or just a separate pile on the chopping board if I'm feeling lazy. But not over the dish, you either don't cover the edges properly, or waste loads of cheese on the counter

discodannie · 08/04/2022 22:32

Cheese is disgusting Envy

Toast bread, add butter, top with beans then microwave to warm the beans - so the toast goes soggy with bean juice, add Mayo, done.

NewPapaGuinea · 08/04/2022 22:32

Person A for not grating enough for both people
