Rishi Sunak’s wife is NOT elected OR in a public role but she is a woman

Have you noticed that Zac Goldsmith (elected), Mark Carney (role of significance to all of us as Govenor of the Bank of England), 4th Viscount Rothmere (controlling shareholder and Chair of the Daily Mail) all have non Dom status but no mention is really made. However, a woman, who has no public role, has never said anything public, is being criticised for her non Dom status?

And yes she’s getting massive dividends but I imagine as it’s family money there is a massive pre-nup in place so it’s not like Rishi will be able to run off with it!

Personally, 2m per couple is far too low... i would have it at 5m per individual and 10m per couple.

At 1m, too many people would be caught out as property rich but cash poor.

4% of estates pay iht because the rest plan to avoid it.

I have been thinking about the predicament that Sunak finds himself in and really it is because we still live with the antiquated notion of nation states in a global world. Wouldn't it be so much better if countries got together and harmonise their rules. For example in Europe we could perhaps call it the European Union.
Don't know, just an idea, probably won't catch on.

StormzyinaTCup · 11/04/2022 22:26

As a one-off tax it might fly but if it’s longer than that I’m not convinced and I certainly wouldn’t be putting it in a manifesto as vote winner.

Back of a fag packet but if you taxed just the 171 billionaires 1% of their wealth (600billion) that would raise 60 billion......

Obv its not that simple or would raise that amount but it gives an idea of the scale of wealth (or not) in this country.

But the biggest issue is there is no real political will in either of the main parties to do this.

Blossomtoes · 11/04/2022 22:32

I don’t know why not. The vast majority of people who would be liable for it would be London property owners and London votes predominantly Labour. It would be a vote winner in the rest of the country.

Well pop that back in a manifesto and let’s see what happens!! Oh wait someone did and it didn’t end wellGrin

Weird isn't it, Tax the rich and its a vote loser, Tax the poor/wc/mc and its a vote winner!

How we are so easily manipulated.

Exactly and it’s the same with regard to reforming the NHS. The best they all do is to tinker around the edges.

Maybe Rachel Reeves will prove me wrong when she has completed her hastily redrafted ‘review’. Let’s hope that’s not back of a fag packet.

I think I will right to Sunak and suggest that he makes it a central plank of his upcoming campaign to be Prime Minister.

NHS is slightly different because the waiting lists and delays have to be addressed first before anyone starts to "reform"

A wealth tax or better still a reform of rates on income and property is whats required and can be done pretty much instantly.

But as i said before, Tories have been in for 12 years, they ve done nothing to reform either, so it time for them to move on.

I'm happy for them to move on if Labour can come up with some credible and sensible policies to address covid and the cost of living crisis. We are well past the free Wi-Fi type gimmicks.

StormzyinaTCup · 11/04/2022 23:50

I missed off a massively important point, appeal to 51% of the population and get off the f*k*g fence on what a woman is.

By the time we get to the next election that will be a luxury very few will be able to afford. The next one will be fought and won on the economy, there are going to be people on their knees by then. Tonight’s Panorama was truly shocking and it’s going to get much worse before it gets better.

In January one party proposed removing VAT on fuel for the time being, the other voted against it.

I would say it is already fairly clear which has at least the start of a plan for the cost of living crisis and which doesn't know how to fill up a car because they never have.

Tillsforthrills · 12/04/2022 06:58

I think Blossom meant that while KS stance on women has turned many off voting for them, identity politics will be sacrificed by voters hit hard by the Tory induced cost of living crisis.

As families struggle with basic needs like heating and eating, the Tories and their corrupt self serving elite will become even more intolerable.

We all know what the Tories policies are..."look after ourselves" we've had 12 years of that! Labour have yet to publish their manifesto and 2 years out, no one would expect them to give a heads up to BJ this far out.

On what is a woman, last year there were over 60,000 reported rapes in the UK, 1500 convictions... now i'm sure that being able to biologically describe a woman on TV is vital to you but i might suggest that 58500 (mainly women) might prefer some sort of justice having suffered horrendous sexual abuse.

I don't agree with Labours fencing sitting on Trans but in all honesty people like BJ and Sunak have completely failed to protect 51% of the population.

The trans rights issue hasn’t hit Labour at all if polling’s anything to go by. Not saying anyone’s wrong to care about it, but it’s hard to exaggerate what a non-issue it is for voters not on mumsnet or segments of Twitter.

Yes they need to not just be will people will like the sound of this but will they work.

As you say Reeves review can’t be a hasty look at this current issue

I found the £15 living wage recently a bit disconcerting on that level.

I don’t mind Labour and felt happiest voting for them when they had a landslide but Starmer needs to have some sound policies.

I completely agree with you and have been saying this all along.

Also a lot of people on social media have been going on about how she doesn't live in India so she's not really dom there but actually domicile status is literally where you "belong" you don't have to actually ever live there 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm sick of the bbc saying "if her husband lives here then why is she non dom? It shows a lack of commitment to the uk"....implying that she should always live where her husband is. Like wtaf? She doesn't belong to him!

Why is she getting so much shit as if she's telling him what to do? For all we know she might disagree with all his decisions and think he's a twat!

Morally non domicile status might be questionable but tough shit really. This is the legal loophole we have the only way we can change what we dislike about the country is through voting (I appreciate this doesn't get what you want but it's how democracy works!) Vilifying a woman in the press is not going to change it.

Tillsforthrills · 12/04/2022 08:03

I think you’re missing the point entirely.

This isn’t about her sex, it would be the same if it were the other way around and he were the multi millionaire spouse of the Chancellor.

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2022 08:06

It goes to Rishi Sunak's long term intentions - as does the retention of green card (more important in my mind).

If you want to lead the country (and we've been led to believe that he does) I imagine voters would like to know that'll you stick around to see the outcome.

Nothing to do with ownership.

Hesma · 12/04/2022 08:06

I think it has less to do with her being a woman and more to do with that fact that her husband is the chancellor and has quite happily made life tougher for the rest of us while a large part of his family’s income is untouchable. A big hypocritical gesture to all of us who are struggling

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2022 08:08

Or as Teresa May might say if you're a citizen of everywhere, you are a citizen of nowhere. I bet Sunak clapped at that (with his green card in his back pocket.)
