Rishi Sunak’s wife is NOT elected OR in a public role but she is a woman

Have you noticed that Zac Goldsmith (elected), Mark Carney (role of significance to all of us as Govenor of the Bank of England), 4th Viscount Rothmere (controlling shareholder and Chair of the Daily Mail) all have non Dom status but no mention is really made. However, a woman, who has no public role, has never said anything public, is being criticised for her non Dom status?

And yes she’s getting massive dividends but I imagine as it’s family money there is a massive pre-nup in place so it’s not like Rishi will be able to run off with it!

Yes, political wranglings (and we haven’t been left in short supply over the last few years) and media reporting/feeding is interesting to me.

What I would find interesting would be to have a government that wasn't spending all of its time partying, arguing with itself and spaffing money on its already rich mates, but instead actually from time to time actually considered the interests of the majority of the population.

Clavinova · 11/04/2022 11:15

The leak didn't come from a different political party @ Clavinova, it came from opposition rivals in his own.

I was talking about the Stephen Kinnock tax affair but either way we have no idea who leaked information on Rishi Sunak and his wife - could just be a civil servant.

SleeplessInEngland · 11/04/2022 11:17

I'd say the chances of Johnson not being the leaker are 0.0001%.

Even if you're inexplicably a fan of the guy you have to admit it all works out remarkably well for him. No doubt if/when Truss becomes a contender there'll be more unfavourable stories coming to light involving her.

Could be anyone, politician, civil servant, disgruntled employee/former employee, jealous "friend" the list could be very long. One of them could have been bragging about their clever tax plans and the wrong person overheard. Doesn't really matter though.

@Clavinova Since you are so clearly greatly exercised by the tax affairs of Stephen Kinnock's wife, why don't you start a thread about it?
That way this hugely important issue will not get lost on this thread that is about something else entirely.
Fulmine · 11/04/2022 11:50

@Clavinova, with all your banging on about other people, you are making it SO obvious that you can't think of any way to justify Sunak's conduct.

Blossomtoes · 11/04/2022 12:06

@Clavinova

Opposition rivals?

From a different political party.

No, from next door @Clavinova. Nobody believes this was leaked by the Opposition.
daimbarsatemydogsbone · 11/04/2022 12:14

Did I miss the bit where Stephen Kinnock was appointed chancellor by Boris Johnson? I'd have thought that would be front page news.

this thread that is about something else entirely.

There are a number of obvious (and relevant) similarities, not least because Helle Thorning Schmidt went on to become Prime Minister of Denmark and her party were calling for Denmark’s tax rates to be raised to cope with recession at the time. Add in that Stephen Kinnock offered to pay tax he didn't need to pay to save his wife's career and there was a leak of her tax affairs to the press etc... She also appeared on BBC Question Time last month.

It was Crikeyalmighty who decided to write a paragraph about the tax position in Denmark on this thread first - not me. You could always ban her from posting about Denmark in future but I wouldn't recommend that sort of behaviour.

Not at all - let me know if Rishi Sunak is found to have broken any tax laws and when the current Labour Party come off the fence and propose banning non-dom status.

Notonthestairs · 11/04/2022 12:38

By all means argue that Sunak has done nothing to dent his career. He absolutely should remain Chancellor. In fact feel free to promote him. Wink
Let's see how it pans out.

Personally I think they'll be in the US before the next election.

No, but Kinnock is the best all be it rather feeble attempt at a squirrel we have so far seen on this thread.
Clavinova · 11/04/2022 12:43

Did I miss the bit where Akshata Murty was appointed a government minister?

Stephen Kinnock is the spouse of the former Prime Minister of Denmark.

Wouldn’t blame them.
And they will be no poorer for it and we will be no richer.

Ok, don't kick me, but it's 'albeit'.

@Clavinova You missed.

Jeremy Corbyn is the former Labour leader.

Yes, it's clear he has an agenda and/or people pulling strings in the background.

He is one of those "politicians" who comes from nowhere (only became an MP in 2015 after being parachuted into a safe seat), then becomes Chancellor (second most important minister) with no prior ministerial experience. He's been put there for a reason by the people in the background with the real power. He'll disappear from politics as soon as he appeared, once he's done their bidding. I do think there needs to be a requirement for ministers to have had a longer track record and experience of being in politics before they get anywhere near the Ministerial table.

StormzyinaTCup · 11/04/2022 13:51

@midsomermurderess

‘albeit’ could certainly be an option but not necessarily a requirement for my sentence.

I’m surprised you didn’t bring up the more controversial ‘they have started a sentence with ‘And’. Which whilst just as ridiculous to point out would be a much more interesting point of discussion.

No need for me to kick you (I’ll leave that to you) Wink

Less controversial but more ridiculous still would be to blame NoTax's bad behaviour on Jeremy Corbyn.

Yes, however will our country manage without a political heavyweight like Sunak at the helm...

'This government is so bereft of anything positive to say about it that even those that support it slavishly can't find anything good to say.'

I can find lots of positive things to say. The handling of the pandemic, furlough, vaccines, opening up the economy when Labour were flapping and wanting is to stay locked up, leading the support of Ukraine etc etc..

I mean yes thank god Jezza and his ragtag bunch of misfits didn't get in, it's always worth saying.

The "handling of the pandemic" has been a disaster in the UK.

If you knew anything about Pandemic risk you would know just how inept the Tories have been over the last 6 years.

Their screw ups start all the way back to 2016 and Project Cygnus.

So if you are going to try to butter up their "record" don't be so obvious.

so they have broken the US rules and what’s probably alarming them now is the US could easily rescind the green cards. You get the big jobs- you play by the rules or you are fair game—

They have already given up their US Green cards, (or he has) but will the US look quite so kindly on someone who broke their rules when it comes to trying to regain them?

Personally I think they'll be in the US before the next election. So they might that they can't execute this plan?

I would be surprised if he doesn't stand down from Politics at the next election.

StormzyinaTCup · 11/04/2022 14:17

@midsomermurderess

Stormyz, you're a piece of work. And of course, you'll take that as a compliment. I doubt you get many.
Why am I a piece of work?

Rishi screwed up the support for 3 MILLION people who he excluded, such as freelancers, self employed, people who changed jobs at the wrong time, etc. That's a huge number of people who he failed to support, mostly through no fault of their own.

For the first lockdown, fair enough, he had to do things quickly. But he failed to address his failings and mistakes when he had ample opportunity to do so in the subsequent months. What was worse was the way he lied and spun about the problem, i.e. blaming self employed for being tax avoiders, saying he'd met the "excluded" group when he hadn't, etc etc.

He managed to make 3 million enemies which is quite an achievement!
