Rishi Sunak’s wife is NOT elected OR in a public role but she is a woman

Have you noticed that Zac Goldsmith (elected), Mark Carney (role of significance to all of us as Govenor of the Bank of England), 4th Viscount Rothmere (controlling shareholder and Chair of the Daily Mail) all have non Dom status but no mention is really made. However, a woman, who has no public role, has never said anything public, is being criticised for her non Dom status?

And yes she’s getting massive dividends but I imagine as it’s family money there is a massive pre-nup in place so it’s not like Rishi will be able to run off with it!

My dh is a high earner and we both vote Tory. We will not in the next election because we are just disgusted with this government. However our local Tory Mp is personally very popular so I don’t see her losing.

StormzyinaTCup · 09/04/2022 17:47

Abolishing the Non-dom tax advantages was a Labour manifesto pledge in the 2019 election.

Closing tax loopholes was also a Labour manifesto pledge made by Tony Blair, which was dropped as soon as he became PM. He then went on to take full advantage of tax loopholes when he stepped down, as evidenced in the Pandora Papers.

That you Rishi?

24theshow · 09/04/2022 18:05

Well this is interesting 🧐

It was wasn’t it 🧐

@StormzyinaTCup

I have just seen the rural counties polling showing the Tory lead has dropped from 17 points to just 2 points

All the more reason to question the leak being from no.10 right on top of local elections. Unless they have taken a leaf out of the opposition parties and are going for self sabotage.

Yes I picture Johnson and Sunak as two rats in a sack taking lumps out of each other. Johnson has the weight advantage so I think Sunak is done.

@CertainUncertain

When we moved to the UK in 2010 it was on a 2-year basis and we registered as non-doms (by the way-- to those saying the US taxes on worldwide income, yes, it does, but she will have had a significant credit for any other taxes paid). Because all our income was US derived, we paid UK tax (at a high rate) only on any money remitted onshore.

When the 2 years were up and we decided to stay longer, we applied for indefinite leave to remain even thought it was going to increase our tax bill. Although our kids were in private school and we had private medical care, we were making ample use of infrastructureroads and bridges, transport systems, parks, and on two occasions NHS A&E departmentsand it seemed morally wrong to pay the bulk of our tax to a country where we weren't living.

Granted, we didn't have billions at stake, but overall, I do find it pretty offensive that the chancellor and his wife didn't do the same.

It's a shame politicians don't have the same standards.

If Mrs Sunak is suddenly prepared to stump up several million quid in taxes she isn't liable for in order to keep her hubby in a £150,000-a-year job I think I'd like to know why that is.

StormzyinaTCup · 09/04/2022 19:16

She is liable to pay tax and she legally has the option of where to pay them. She has chosen India as that where her income is derived from (it's a more favourable rate so bit of a no brainier really). People got very outraged by the optics of this, she has taken that on board and is stumping up and paying U.K. tax on it now.

It would seem that this is now not enough and people are asking, 'why would she do this' or 'she must have another reason' - she can't win.

JC544D · 09/04/2022 19:24

Non Doms have been a question of discussion in the news for years. The highlighting of yet another one is nothing new.

limitedperiodonly · 09/04/2022 19:24

It's perfectly reasonable to ask why someone who was keen on saving a lot of money in a legal manner would suddenly decide to pay a great deal of it for a small return. I say small return - £150,000 would be a lot of money to me. She must really love him.

JC544D · 09/04/2022 19:55

OP?

Did you miss all the fuss about Non Doms during the David Cameron years? It was forever in the news!

EvilPea · 09/04/2022 20:10

Looks like he’s moving out of Downing Street.

Wonder what news is coming

JC544D · 09/04/2022 20:14

The UK has the biggest national debt since WW2, yet according to some posts in this thread Rishi Sunak is a magician with money.

Some things just don't add up!

I read that his wife and children are moving out to their house in west London. Sunak will join them at the weekend and live in Downing Street during the week.
jgw1 · 09/04/2022 22:29

@Clavinova

Are you trying to demonstrate that non-dom status exists for people who are richer than anyone needs to be to avoid paying tax?

No - I'm saying we need to compete with countries such as the Netherlands if we wish to retain London as a major financial centre.

Why do we want to compete for people who do not want to live here and do not want to contribute to society?
jgw1 · 09/04/2022 22:34

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

Let's hope Labour are squeaky clean on this then. Abolishing the Non-dom tax advantages was a Labour manifesto pledge in the 2019 election.
But the manifesto is there to tell us what they are not going to do. See for instance the Tory manifesto and tax rises.

Is there actually any evidence that she pays tax on her income in India, or is she avoiding it there as well?

But Jeremy Corbyn.

No idea, if she is avoiding tax altogether then that's obviously not good and I'd be changing my view. Would make Sunak's position untenable too.

Binkybix · 10/04/2022 01:56

They have not said that tax is paid in India. Previous dividends have been taken in tax havens.

For the record, she has said she will pay some more UK tax - she’s not given up her non-dom status though. So don’t be fooled into thinking she has!

The aim of what Sunak did in banking was to make as much money as possible, not needing to regard impact of any others or with any regard to policy. He was (I think) involved in some of the deals that helped contribute to the financial crisis (Goldman being on the opposite side of a trade that had to be bailed out by the tax payer to the tune of billions) and then moved on to companies implicated in the RBS sale.

So a magician in creaming it off the top despite the poor impacts on the wider population of his industries actions? Yes.

closetmeupandshootmetotheskies · 10/04/2022 02:52

None of the MPs, tory or Labour, are clean on this and they are all as bad as each other. When we were told to stop home two years back, all of them crammed their fat snouts in the trough to buy new shiny tech to "work from home".

Anyone who thinks Labour are "special" or "different" is on crack and i want some too because insomnia is making me its bitch. Seriously though, they are all as bad as each other, hence the lack of opposition on this.
