Rishi Sunak’s wife is NOT elected OR in a public role but she is a woman

Have you noticed that Zac Goldsmith (elected), Mark Carney (role of significance to all of us as Govenor of the Bank of England), 4th Viscount Rothmere (controlling shareholder and Chair of the Daily Mail) all have non Dom status but no mention is really made. However, a woman, who has no public role, has never said anything public, is being criticised for her non Dom status?

And yes she’s getting massive dividends but I imagine as it’s family money there is a massive pre-nup in place so it’s not like Rishi will be able to run off with it!

And the statement she put out was just such total bullshit, it's massively inflamed the situation by conflating tax residency with citizenship. If she hadn't lied, she'd be in less trouble now.

Yup. She reeeeeeeally didn't help the situation with that one.

*Whatever else I'll say about Labour I suspect they'd have more sense than to hire a billionaire to be chancellor and then act all surprised when it turns out to be bad politics when he raises taxes.

Really? You do know that both Starmer and Corbyn are far richer than Johnson?

And you might like to look at the personal wealth of the current Shadow Chancellor Rachal Reeves. Also richer than Johnson. And maybe have a lool at her husband too!*

Does anyone else love the sounds of straws being clutched to make a moot point? Stupid logic.

PurpleThursdays · 08/04/2022 17:22

*It is his economic and financial knowledge and skills that are important not his bank balance.

I think its quite good, surely shows he can manage money. He clearly isn't doing it for the salary is he.*

Yes, someone who can't work chip and pin is exactly what we need for Chancellor. What was the national debt when Tories took over in 2010? What is it now?

Aye, it's 'easy' to manage money when it ain't your own your playing with...

HRTQueen · 08/04/2022 17:23

Angela Rayner is Deputy Leader

Not sure you can really win the argument about leadership choices

Fleur405 · 08/04/2022 17:30

Well there are some other differences. For example, Mark Carney was legitimately and obviously non-domiciled in the uk given that he was only ever here temporarily. The chancellor’s wife… much more questionable on the basis she seems pretty settled here! And oh yeah, Mark Carney was not married to the chancellor who is responsible for things including tax collection and tax policy (which includes the rules around non-dom status)

ScreamingSauvignon · 08/04/2022 17:40

I find it rather entertaining. This government that delivered Brexit is now entangled in a public debate over the chancellors foreign wife and her tax affairs.

The very rich can stay though.

Wnkingawalrus · 08/04/2022 17:41

Clearly he looked like an idiot, but I can’t remember the last time I used chip and pin. Not sure I can even remember my pin. I only pay with phone now.

IamnotSethRogan · 08/04/2022 18:07

He's the chancellor who has repeatedly refused to make changes that would benefit the country that seem to benefit his family personally.

Blossomtoes · 08/04/2022 18:25

Marina’s got it spot on again.

Johnson would be one of the wealthiest men in the country if the CSA hadn't taken it all.

Seriously, a former lawyer and DPP is always going to be better off than an ex journalist, sacked twice for lying.

But of course neither Reeves nor Starmer are making tax rules to make themselves better off, both are Labour politicians, not the first choice if you want to get your hands on power to better ones self.

MmeMeursault · 08/04/2022 19:13

It's because Sunak is clearly a graduate of the Boris Johnson School of Wilful Disregard of the Ministerial Code of Conduct, rather than because of her actions alone.

If the nation's finance minister won't follow the nation's finance and tax rules that us mere minions are required to follow, that's where the problem lies.

Alexandra2001 · 08/04/2022 19:13

@JaniieJones

'Does she pay tax in India? Mr Sunak didn't say that did he.'

She pays tax on her income in India in India.

She pays tax on her UK income in the UK.

Good for her but she chose to be non dom in order to avoid paying tax on over seas earnings here in the UK.

India's highest tax rate being 30% significantly lower than UK rates.

SueSaid · 08/04/2022 19:15

'Marina’s got it spot on again.'

Marina hasn't got it spot at all, she never does. Her childish monologue is cringeworthy - "now he’s the pocket Samson who’s just taken a massive haircut courtesy of his wife" I mean really, and she thinks she's a serious journalist? She should try Take A Break, more her standard of gossipy tat.

Blossomtoes · 08/04/2022 19:15

Really? You do know that both Starmer and Corbyn are far richer than Johnson?

You’d kind of expect that really. Corbyn bought his Islington house decades ago so did Starmer who also had a very successful legal career. Starmer hasn’t had an expensive messy divorce.

YANBU Op - I completely agree with you. Stinks of misogyny & probably a bit of racism thrown in too. @FreddyVoorhees & @JaniieJones have said it much better than I could.

Alexandra2001 · 08/04/2022 19:32

@Clavinova Good effort but No Cigar.

Some things are indefensible others are not, you've yet to know the difference.

Sirzy · 08/04/2022 19:37

She is now going to start paying. I doubt it will be backdated though!

jgw1 · 08/04/2022 19:40

I think it is completely unreasonable to expect that the Chancellor's wife should pay a similar proportion of her vast income as tax as I do.
After all her income is so vast because she is so much better than me, and I should doff my cap to her.

Is Sunak trying to make Williamson and Grayling look like competent ministers?

Silverclocks · 08/04/2022 19:40

@Sirzy

Is she? Is that revent news? That's quite a climb down from "we've done absolutely nothing wrong".
SleeplessInEngland · 08/04/2022 19:40

Lol, so after all the perverse defences of her on here she’s going to pay up after all.

Optics matter.

MoonminMummy9 · 08/04/2022 19:40

Hasn't her company taken furlough money from the government?

Don't they have US green cards that's why they keep jetting off to California?

@JaniieJones while you are hear, would it be acceptable to you for the Chancellor to spend a fortune on a birthday party while denying children the opportunity to have a party at all?
