Deeply concerned about Child Safety in Bristol

MatthewJTaylor · 07/04/2022 21:28

From May 5th to May 8th 2022, the Tobacco Factory Theatres in Bristol is having performances of "The Family Sex Show".
This show is aimed at children 5 years old and up.
The performers involved get naked.
The discussion with the children is on sex, sexuality and sexual pleasure.

I cannot imagine brining a 5 year old child to a theatre where people will to to her/him about sex and show their naked bodies to her/him.

Am I the crazy one?

No completely separate incident. A London Borough sent a carnival arts company into libraries and they turned up in a monkey outfit with a big penis.

@MoltenLasagne

MAPS is the new name paedophiles have given themselves as Minor Attracted People.
And these individuals believe children can have fulfilling sexual relationships with an adult Confused
Tabitha005 · 08/04/2022 15:20
@FuckeryOmbudsman - I do not believe that any 5 year old, ever, has asked a question about sexual pleasure in the classroom, unless they're a victim of CSA.

Early and precocious language about sex is a massive red flag for abuse. Which I'm sure you know as a teacher.

You are a teacher aren't you?
A teacher? Sounding more like either the producer, director or member of the cast to me.

I have had a further email from Bristol Safeguarding Board. They are looking into it and suggest that we contact the theatre directly

There was a comment on the theatres Facebook page which they've now deleted, but sums things up pretty accurately:

'Anyone who's ok with this needs their hard drive examining!'

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 08/04/2022 15:27

Actually, I take some of that back.

The people running, designing, paying for, appearing in this show ARE The School of Sex Ed, all of whom are the proud owners of pronouns!

schoolofsexed.org/team

Including Gayathiri Kamalakanthan (they/she) who works in "Decolonising Contraception" whatever the hell that might be!

Its Arts Council Funded and I thought I saw a venue that both had been in. Prepared to be wrong. But I am sure I saw something else as I was trolling along trying to work out who/what they are.

As I cannot find it again, though, I shall retract that statement. Apologies!

backtobusy · 08/04/2022 15:33

If you are going to include five year olds in a show discussing sex and safeguarding and gender you cannot safely have more information that the Pantasorous campaign and some gentle same sex family representation.

I worked for the NSPCC for years in a safeguarding role, I know the central office has gone off piste a few times in the last couple of years but I can't believe they would support this dangerous tripe.

theDudesmummy · 08/04/2022 15:35

...this is coming right from the mainstream...the backers of this thing include banks, big universities, the Arts Council...I really despair. Paedophiles and misogynists were always here and always will be but do we really have to have them applauded at the highest levels of society? (The answer is apparantly yes).

@StandUpStraight I guess you can add the brainwashed and deluded to your list

backtobusy · 08/04/2022 15:36

Working for the NSPCC we once got involved with a theatre group doing a play on consent with 15 year old plus dc in a school.
We were there incase the work triggered disclosures, which unsurprisingly it did.
I hope this group have similar safeguarding in place in they are moving into this space.

ScrollingLeaves · 08/04/2022 15:39

@theDudesmummy
I wonder if banks backing the theatre company gave their backing knowing this was the sort of show they would be putting on?

theDudesmummy · 08/04/2022 15:40

They bloody well should...

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/04/2022 15:41

@StageRage

OK.

I am not generally one to get aerated about a show before I have seen it, and have no in principle objection to people of any age seeing bodies without clothes on stage. And disclaimer, I have had some small former dealings with this company.

These are the things that make me feel that I need more convincing that this company know what they are doing:

There is lots of jolly 're-assurance' on the website - but the first 'ask more' that I clicked on, the pre-info document for parents - wasn't ready. t's the bit that this thread focuses on: nakedness n the show. So FGS why wasn't this ready in time for the marketing and publicity being launched? Have the company prioritised this...or not?

There is much earnest but fake referencing - they don't say this has the approval of the NSPCC but they like to make it sound as if it is somehow affiliated (they don't actually say that of course).

They trumpet the work of the School of Sexuality Education and say it is based on their curriculum, but that organisation's support for the RSHE curriculum starts at KS3 so not sure how this gives any credibility to a show for 5 year olds?

One of the FAQs is 'Is It Theatre n Education?'. Their answer to this shows that actually they have no idea what genuine TIE is - good TIE is exactly what they aspire to be. Which makes them sound like over-eager but somewhat arrogant know it alls.

The glossary is somewhat eyebrow raising for a family show...I hope that it is not a list of terms that crop up in the show - I very much doubt it. But if it ISN'T show specific, why pick on a random list of, let's say, kink-friendly terms, rather than others. For e.g Including Dildo but not vibrator, Pegging but not Dogging ...I mean if you don't need specific words for the show, why pick random words...when dictionaries and google exist. The glossary, by the way, is compiled form glossaries from Mermaids, Stonewall and Purple Rain . So all specifically LBGTQ orientated organisations. Of course any approach to sex and sexuality for young people must be properly inclusive and non-discriminatory, but to be exclusively from that angle suggests an agenda. Which they may or may not have.

The company is a small young company, with a good 'theatre' reputation. Maybe the show is great. Maybe it isn't. But they haven't got the right professionals and experience in the team to create the credibility they need to create the security for families to take 5 year olds to a show like this.

IMO.

Thanks, this was useful to read.
theDudesmummy · 08/04/2022 15:41

...make it their business to find out I mean

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 08/04/2022 15:42

I wonder if the NSPCC are aware that their reputation is being used to justify this?

veronicagoldberg · 08/04/2022 15:42

Decolonising contraception? Was it ever colonised? Surely the colonists discouraged contraception through their missionary activity.

Terfydactyl · 08/04/2022 15:44

@unwashedanddazed

I hope they sell out and that the audience is entirely made up of old men in grubby rain coats. Wonder how many of the actors would feel happy to get completely naked then?
This is actually a good idea. Anyone know some men who might want to go to make a point?

Sadly I'm nowhere near Bristol so cant help.

Also will photography be allowed?
Wonder if the actors would be so keen once men have their phones out to film parts?

canary1 · 08/04/2022 15:45

I’ve made complaint/ concern to Bristol Safeguarding

HelloDaisy · 08/04/2022 15:45

I’ve just googled The Family Sex show and all the suggestions generated were for family porn videos so any child googling it because they’ve heard about it or their parents are taking them will be exposed to the same websites…

Palmfrond · 08/04/2022 15:48

I have a friend who’s acting career didn’t work out, and she had a subsequent and very successful career being a children’s entertainer, singing songs about pineapples and turtles.
Why in the name of unholy fuck, presuming these people are similarly hard up actors, would they choose this topic as their USP?
So stupid, and obviously massively alarming that this wasn’t dead in dead in the water at the very earliest stages of concept development.

theDudesmummy · 08/04/2022 15:48

You can be sure that, now it has been so widely publicised (thanks, Guardian Angry ) there will be men there, without children, most likely surreptitiously filming, including filming children's reactions.

Perfect28 · 08/04/2022 15:52

I think it's fantastic. I don't understand why there are so many prudish attitudes in this day and age. People seem to take issue with it being delivered by adults, would we prefer young people learned from each other? Would love to see this show.

theDudesmummy · 08/04/2022 15:54

It's not "prudish" to object to trying to create a society which normalises the public grooming of children for sexual abuse.
