.....to wash soiled dog bedding in washing machine?

Puppy did a poo in her cage last night, I cleaned and rinsed it off then washed on a hot wash. DH lost his shit and says we need a new washing machine. I have done another cycle with disinfectant and figure that is fine. Have always washed dog beds in there.
He says we have vastly different levels of hygiene....

Surely the enzymes in the washing powder and hot wash would kill any bacteria anyway. Can get pet washbags to avoid hair clogging machine.

I'm not sure he's cut out for dog ownership if can't handle the clean up of poo & vomit, will get expensive if have to bin & replace things each time. I'm sure the environment is full of shit microbes anyway but thankfully we're blissfully unaware.

@FateHasRedesignedMost

Won’t it leave particles of dog poo in the washing machine?

Sorry but I find it disgusting too.

Why didn’t you hand-wash it outside or soak it in disinfectant first (like you do with re-usable nappies)?

I’d at least empty the filter now, clean the rubber seal and run on a boil cycle with washing machine cleaner, before you put your clothes in it!

The OP's first post says it had been cleaned and rinsed off before going into the machine. It hadn't gone in with the equivalent of a still full nappyload.

I have contamination OCD, I would probably have chucked the bed unless it was expensive BUT doing it with detergent, wiping down the washing machine and then putting a 90C load on with disinfectant would also be fine.

Well she said she cleaned it off first so presumably she didn’t just fold it up and chuck a dog shit parcel in the washing machine.

Also (if you’re a responsible dog owner) you literally pick up dog shits with only a plastic bag. What do you throw your hand out every time?

If you want a dog, cleaning up dog poo is all part of it. Not a pleasant part, but it’s not all jogging down the beach and cuddling up in the living room like a dog food advert.

Empty hot wash will clean it.

elbea · 07/04/2022 20:30

@FateHasRedesignedMost nobody soaks nappies in disinfectant anymore, it would ruin modern nappies. They go straight in the washing machine.

@Tlollj

Well I don’t know if shit is shit whoever shit it is. ( there’s a sentence to be going in with) I’ve changed hundreds of shitty nappies in my time, but I wouldn’t wipe a dog’s arse.
I've had to wipe my dog's shitty tail (diarrhoea) before loads of times with rubber gloves on (I showered afterwards) but I actually find human waste worse as it sometimes contains viruses that can be contagious.

Most harmful bacteria (campylobacter, ecoli etc.) in dog poo don't survive very long on surfaces.

I wash horrendous horse rugs in mine - your DH would blow his nut !
I do a quick hot cycle straight after with a dishwasher tablet and some linen zoflora and leave the door open after to air.

caringcarer · 07/04/2022 23:23

So does he think you need 2 washing machines. One for humans and 1 for pets. He is nuts.
