From today's Guardian :

Rishi Sunak’s multi-millionaire wife claims non-domicile status, it has emerged, which allows her to save millions of pounds in tax on dividends collected from her family’s IT business empire.

Akshata Murthy, who receives about £11.5m in annual dividends from her stake in the Indian IT services company Infosys, declares non-dom status, a scheme that allows people to avoid tax on foreign earnings.

Anyone as outraged by this as I am? I mean what the actual fuck?

Richmond would vote for the proverbial donkey in a blue rosette without even thinking twice about it. That’s why the recently headhunted Sunak was parachuted in there for the 2015 election. My guess is they’ll be looking for a replacement pretty soon now his PM aspirations are dashed.
@annabelindajane. I most certainly am not on my high horse— I was being factual— British citizens like Elton, Paul McCartney and David gilmour Pay uk taxes on worldwide income— non Dom was a choice Sunaks missus made as she is domiciled here most of the year and I can see no logical reason for that, other than to pay less tax than she would in the UK!! If she had paid it all in India there might have been some logical tax reason — but at no point has anyone categorically said it was all paid in India on those dividends. What she has done isn’t illegal here, but it’s a very very bad look for the chancellor to have his wife embroiled in tax avoidance schemes. I don’t quite get why you think it's so ok? Are you or your partner non Doms for tax purposes? You seem very defensive.
Not at all just want to point out that she hasn’t done anything illegal . As an Indian she cant have dual nationality and in a few more years she has to give up her non dom status . Maybe she wants her taxes paid in India as there is genuine child poverty there as in feral children living in the streets . Am sure there are posters on here who’ve taken the moral high ground who’ve paid cash for jobs to avoid tax .

Don’t understand the immoral bit of saving into pensions either . It’s taxed on way out . Citizens should be encouraged to save for their retirement as makes them less dependent on the state in old age which means more money for poor people .

annabelindajane · 12/04/2022 11:12

@mrshoho

Yes exactly. SPAD was obviously answering in respect of their personal circumstances. Refreshing to hear of very wealthy who choose not to amass even more wealth when there is no need. Genuinely why do mega wealthy feel the need to get richer and richer?
Maybe so they can buy equipment for the NHS - there’s always things you can do with your extra cash you don’t need .

There’s lots of chips on shoulders about rich people

Blossomtoes · 12/04/2022 11:25

There’s lots of chips on shoulders about rich people

There’s lots of anger about rich people who wriggle out of paying tax. If we taxed those people proportionately the NHS wouldn’t need them to play Lord and Lady Bountiful.

But that’s in a dream world , so let the rich donate . Let’s be practical about this and encourage generosity .
Blossomtoes · 12/04/2022 11:50

It’s not a dream world. It’s a perfectly realistic world. It works in Scandinavia.

Cornettoninja · 12/04/2022 12:08

Why’s it a dream world @annabelindajane? Because we’ve been sold this line that we need to grant privileges to the very rich in the hope we might be able to make some money off their endeavours? There is evidence for both sides of the debate globally - I’m not convinced we’re better off trying to be some sort of alternative to Monaco or wherever people try and hold up as something to aspire to. Their population isn’t rich because Monaco has amazing social mobility, they’re already rich, the working classes travel in from neighbouring countries.

The UK’s tax situation isn’t even common globally, its purposefully edging towards a set up that makes it attractive for the rich to keep hold of their money and why we suddenly found ourselves with headlines about sanctioning Russian oligarchs.

If this episode shows anything it shows that people generally don’t care about the super rich as long as their basic needs are met and a certain level of aspiration is achievable. Once that goes, politically, society is on very shaky ground.

It may be justifiably identified as envy but look at what people are envious of. The ability to heat their homes, not having to worry about basic bills, access health care and a decent standard of education etc. I’d argue that anybody in a position of wealth, enough to secure those things for generations of their family is acting immorally by dismissing concerns as envy.

mrshoho · 12/04/2022 13:29

Chip on shoulder? Really? You think we should be in awe of the charitable donations of super rich individuals?

No I'm fed up of the old chestnut of the trickle down effect that we've supposedly benefited from. We're expected to turn a blind eye and not concern ourselves with the inequality in the proportion of tax we pay as our overall standard of living is supposedly greatly enhanced?

How come then the UK is 17th in the world ranking of median income per country? How is it that the UK has many regions in the most deprived list of northern Europe?

He might need to spare a little money for a fine though.

Yes he does.........

Am sure it’s tax deductible.😂

As for comments re Scandinavia : their tax take is far higher than ours
British people don’t like high rates of tax . Scandinavian mentality is different from ours too . They are more about the group as opposed to the British who tend to be more about themselves .

mrshoho · 12/04/2022 21:17

Actually not everyone in the UK is of the low tax get richer persuasion. The last general election 43% of the votes were Conservative. More people voted for Labour and Lib Dems combined than they did Tory.

Liveliferun · 12/04/2022 22:17

It’s a bit odd to volunteer so much information about your private financial and tax affairs and then get offended when people comment on your post. MNHQ will delete your post if you don’t want to permit responses to it.

ForcedOut123 · 12/04/2022 23:35

I got shafted as self-employed, can’t even claim £40 for Xmas meal I missed because of new tax rules. It’s totally immoral for our chancellor to be dodging any kind of tax that could be bettering our country. And this green card business stinks

And how do we pay the costs of pandemic without ending up with a basket case economy . Then we’d all know what real poverty is .

Her father started his life in poverty and by dint of hard work has raised himself up

Guff.

He was born into a comfortably off middle class Brahmin family who could afford to educate him privately and send him to university.

@C8H10N4O2 You know nothing about india… please stop with your pettiness

Sweden hasn't been socialist since the 80s.

Priceless. You know nothing about me and apparently don't even read the official biographies of the people for whom you are shilling.

Perhaps you should try a bit more research from credible sources and a get a bit less info from whatsapp groups.

I am from India and don't entirely agree with you. However, I am not going to go into this because I am happy with the current outcome. Her financial affairs are clearly very murky and not a good look in this climate. Caesar's wife and all that...

I am hoping it stops her mother Sudha Murthy from writing the most godawful preachy books telling the rest of India to live simply and not be carried away by materialistic pursuits:)

If everyone paid a fair share it would be a start. Maybe the Chancellor setting up schemes that weren't so open to abuse would be another.
