From today's Guardian :

Rishi Sunak’s multi-millionaire wife claims non-domicile status, it has emerged, which allows her to save millions of pounds in tax on dividends collected from her family’s IT business empire.

Akshata Murthy, who receives about £11.5m in annual dividends from her stake in the Indian IT services company Infosys, declares non-dom status, a scheme that allows people to avoid tax on foreign earnings.

Anyone as outraged by this as I am? I mean what the actual fuck?

So will she end up paying no tax in India now?

If indeed she ever did. Nobody has confirmed it, her tax arrangements seem very vague.

cakeorwine · 10/04/2022 19:14

@annabelindajane

There will always be outrageously rich people . Look what happens in communist countries where it’s all for the state and everyone has the same standard of living - supposedly . But still the elite fly high above it all . I give you the USSR and look what happened there .

I admire those who start very successful companies and employ thousands of people .

There will always be inequality in society.

Some countries have much more inequality than others. Some are more equal.

Government and tax systems can make a big difference to that inequality.

TokyoSushi · 10/04/2022 19:21

Good grief, now he's put out yet another statement referring himself for an investigation. Another waste of taxpayers money.

Honestly, if he put as much effort into sorting the cost of living crisis as he is into saving his own skin we'd all be much better off.

He's obviously shitting it. What a twat 🙄

Crikeyalmighty · 10/04/2022 19:21

@annabelindajane. I see the pony riding Hampshire set are out in force at the moment defending him and the rich upper class tax avoiders. — unless you are Mrs sunak, her accountant or a very close friend— you have no idea where she has paid tax- if any. There are lots of reports out there saying most was funnelled through Maritius- and if she is that benevolent maybe she could have used several million to not put the company she part owned into liquidation for multi millions of debt including HMRC and local suppliers and owing redundancy payments -after accepting very large amounts of furlough cash and covid loans. If the Sunaks would state exactly how much was paid and where then that would be handy to know and stop speculation — until then I will reserve judgement that much if any was paid in India. With regards to Gordon Brown etc— I will take 5 Gordon Browns over this bunch of posh self serving pillocks!!

Figmentofmyimagination · 10/04/2022 19:24

I love the naivety of pp who honestly believes RS spouse would have been paying these taxes in India. Do you not think, if that were true, that somebody would have confirmed this by now? No. I read that she is channelling her dividends through a jurisdiction where no tax is payable. Perfectly lawful but she should rightly expect to be reviled for it.

Figmentofmyimagination · 10/04/2022 19:26

He should resign over this. It is no better than Amazon, Starbucks etc etc engaging in transfer pricing to avoid their tax. It is grubby and immoral in a liberal democracy and it calls his judgment into question.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/04/2022 19:28

@annabelindajane— I admire those too who start businesses and employ thousands— not all of us who cannot remotely support the Sunaks are raving anarchists or anti rich people. I have a decent business, but am anti super rich people thinking rules and tax are for little people- not them— whether that be tax planning that makes sure the family pay as little as possible When you are the chancellor or behind door party’s or contracts for mates without tender.

annabelindajane · 10/04/2022 19:30

In reply to the equality : happy to be educated on any country that has equality , please expand .

I’m not Mrs Sunaks accountant so apart from what I read in press which may not be accurate she paid 2 million in India - which would go a lot further there than here . None of this smoke and mirrors stuff hides the fact that Labour see Rishi as a threat and want him gone so let’s go for the wife as she’s an easy target.

cakeorwine · 10/04/2022 19:31

I think some people would be surprised at the percentage of tax some people pay relative to their income (not just salary) compared to others.

Companies get villified for the percentage of tax they pay (on a worldwide scale).

Crikeyalmighty · 10/04/2022 19:32

@Figmentofmyimagination Exactly- they would be at pains to highlight this because whilst it’s still crap- it almost has an air of philanthropy to it— If someone can point me to the fact she has paid multi millions in tax over quite a few years in India on her dividends I am more than happy to revise my opinion ‘slightly’ although I can’t see why she does as is clearly domiciled in the UK.

cakeorwine · 10/04/2022 19:34

It's not equality. It's the difference in inequality.
You can certainly see it in India. Massive rural poverty and very rich people.
You can see it in Europe - and some countries in Europe have tax and social systems to reduce inequalities.

I'm not entirely convinced that it's labour who sees him as a threat to be honest.

I think it's much closer to home in his own party who see him as a threat.

Blossomtoes · 10/04/2022 19:35

Labour see Rishi as a threat and want him gone

All indications are that this has come from the right.

annabelindajane · 10/04/2022 19:37

Yes correct about him being a threat within his own party .

Let’s not forget this is what it’s really about . Nasty
low life politics . Why would anyone do this job .

Labour?

I strongly suspect that this has Conservative hands on it. Partygate is still happening. Sunak seems clean on parties.
People have few friends in politics.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/04/2022 19:56

I just had a quick check and I cannot see any links saying she paid her dividend tax in India— can someone point me to it?? Have seen a lot of similar posts to this though

Bless, what naivety. Labour have nothing to fear from Mr Sunak. They can just sit back and hand him the rope.

The actual person who finds him such a threat was the one who went to Kyiv yesterday for a blatant photo opp.

I wouldn't rule out other leading Tories either. Anyone who fancies a run at the leadership when Johnson eventually goes has a clear motive to try and knock out a competitor.
daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/04/2022 20:49

I cannot imagine Labour want Rishi gone - he’s one comedy gold disaster after another at the moment - he’s a gift to opposition parties.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/04/2022 20:51

BTW I didn’t know Sainsbury’s had a scheme for you to borrow their employees cars. Mine’s quite old so maybe I can use one of theirs like Rishi did?

mrshoho · 10/04/2022 20:54

Frosty! Interestingly worded too. If he's going down he'll be taking the advisers and quite a few others.

She's following the rules. That's more than can be said for our prime minister.

cakeorwine · 10/04/2022 21:00

Has Sue Gray got time for another investigation?

annabelindajane · 10/04/2022 21:01

Good for him although it’s more public money but hey ho .

As for very rich people I know of one who bought 2 cancer related machines for the NHS at around 16 million each . If he hadn’t been outrageously rich that’s 2 bits of equipment we wouldn’t have in this country which is now available for children who used to have to go to a Europe to be treated .
