To wonder who funds a teacher's school trip

My daughter went skiing with her school in February half term.

Four teachers accompanied them.

Do teachers pay for themselves, or a contribution, (I appreciate they are working though), or is the cost to the pupil inflated to cover the cost of the teachers?

Don’t suppose they pay for themselves, it’s a work expense not a holiday.

bigTillyMint · 06/04/2022 10:43

There are usually a number of free adult spaces included in the cost. I guess that ultimately the parents are paying for the teacher, but the teachers are in locoparentis obvs

Just10moreminutesplease · 06/04/2022 10:43

It’s covered by what the pupils pay, surely? I doubt teachers are expected to pay to work.

KindergartenKop · 06/04/2022 10:43

The pupils pay for the teacher.

It's not a holiday! They have to make sure 50 teenagers don't do anything stupid for a week! Who do you think gets up at 3am and gets the girls out of the boys' room? Who takes johnny to the hospital when he sprains his ankle?

ReadyToMoveIt · 06/04/2022 10:45

I assume the parents cover the costs of the teachers.

Lucifersleeps · 06/04/2022 10:46

If I had to pay to go on a school trip where I was ‘on duty’ 24/7 then I wouldn’t be going.
There are usually ‘free’ teacher places on trips through a company but it’s not rocket science to work out that the cost is recouped from the price the pupils pay.

Sunsnd · 06/04/2022 10:46

Hahaha, you would have to pay me to go on a school trip accompanying a load of teenagers. Doesn’t matter where it is! I can’t believe you think teachers should have to pay to go. They are working not having a jolly.

TurningUpMyStereotype · 06/04/2022 10:47

The teachers deserve a medal for taking kids on trips like that, they definitely don’t have to pay anything, not should they. They probably need a holiday after it.

TurningUpMyStereotype · 06/04/2022 10:47

nor should they

comealongponds · 06/04/2022 10:47

Some places offer free adult places with youth group bookings. Otherwise the cost is split between pupils. Absolutely no way teachers should pay, and if they had to, trips just wouldn’t run.

ClaudiaWankleman · 06/04/2022 10:48

The pupils pay for the teachers. It wouldn't be right for the teachers to pay.

Jalepenojello · 06/04/2022 10:48

The teachers are covered, they don’t pay for themselves.

maddy68 · 06/04/2022 10:49

school trip companies offer free teacher places
Honestly no teacher would give up their free time. Be in duty 24hrs a day AND pay for it :)

luckylavender · 06/04/2022 10:49

Why would anyone imagine that a teacher would pay to work? And how do you think policing teenagers is?

AnxiousHeffalump · 06/04/2022 10:50

The cost is covered by the total payment. Sadly, the cost of extra childcare for the teachers’ own children is not covered, so many teachers are left out of pocket.

Lovebroccoli · 06/04/2022 10:50

The cost is included in the parents' bill. Trips can be organized in school holidays, so why would teachers have to actually pay to give up their own free time to go to work?
A school trip is full on, 24/7 complete immersion in the job. It's certainly not a holiday.

pastapestoparmesan · 06/04/2022 10:50

Four teachers accompanied them. I’m incredibly grateful to them for giving up their half term with family and friends to keep my child and their friends safe, and ensure they had a great time. I made sure to thank them all in person when they returned.

There you go OP, fixed it for you.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 06/04/2022 10:51

I'm staggered that you need to ask

Lampzade · 06/04/2022 10:51

The parents/ guardians pay for the teachers

Hopeful16 · 06/04/2022 10:52

Nor do they pay to fill in the all consuming mountain of paperwork and risk assessments beforehand, nor chasing the parents to return their side of the paperwork to make things legal and safe, nor the meetings beforehand to inform all of what is going on, nor the time organising equipment to go - oh and all whilst doing their actual paid employment! Funny that, isn't it!?!?!

IceVolcanoes · 06/04/2022 10:53

The cost for the kids obviously includes the contribution for the teachers, who are working throughout and have to supervise the kids. It’s part of the trip.

Clymene · 06/04/2022 10:54

Not this again. This always comes up with ski trips. No one ever asks it about wet geography residentials in wales Grin

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/04/2022 10:54

Who on earth would pay to supervise a horde of teenagers skiing?!

I'd need a massive bribe to go at all.

Porcupineintherough · 06/04/2022 10:54

Of course they don't pay, its enough that they give up a week of holiday. If they were going to self fund a ski trip I expect they wouldn't take a group of other people's children with them.

Pinkflask · 06/04/2022 10:54

A trip abroad that my college is currently organising provides one free adult place for every ten students attending. I think this is pretty standard.
