When men say "I prefer women without make-up"...

AIBU to think that when men say "I prefer women without make-up" that they don't usually know what they're talking about (and don't usually have a clue that women ARE wearing it)?

The reality of this statement is usually:

  • I don't like it when women wear really obvious MAKE-UP make-up (loads of lippy and false eyelashes etc) or when it's badly applied (making it obvious);
  • I like really good-looking fresh-faced young women whose complexions, etc., look smooth without it;
  • I like to think of myself as very wholesome (and maybe a bit of a feminist).

What they DON'T mean (but don't realise they don't mean) is:

  • I prefer the look of the average woman of my own age without any make-up on.

I know so many men who say this, and it always mildly irritates me as it's said like it's a kind of virtue.

As a post-mating-phase human, it's not like it really affects my life. But it always makes me feel for all the women who are still in a position where they're affected by this nonsense...

@LittleBearPad makes yo no better than a sexist man doesn't it

LittleBearPad · 05/04/2022 21:00

Why isn’t it?

pastypirate · 05/04/2022 21:00

I think men don't like the trickery either.

Bless their little hearts.......

@ThreeLocusts you telling me no women ever start a sentence like this when talking with friends about men
We all have our prefences

worriedatthistime · 05/04/2022 21:02

@@LittleBearPad you can't call something out then act the same way, would you think its ok in the work place to make a sexist comment and think as a woman you can

What's the common equivalent comment that women make to men?

Eh? You’re not making a great deal of sense.

You’re also very defensive of men. It’s interesting…

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/04/2022 21:05

I’ve seen women on here loads be like “oh my husbands prefers me with no makeup, he likes the natural me, blah blah”. I can guarantee he doesn’t!

Makeup is literally designed to make a face anyone’s face look better by enhancing the features, concealing flaws, etc.

There is not a woman alive who does not look better with makeup on- it’s literally what it’s designed for!

If a woman really does look better without it, it will be because she is shit at applying it.

MadKittenWoman · 05/04/2022 21:05

Men really don’t have any idea that the ‘natural’ look takes a lot more time, product and effort than a smoky eye and red lipstick.

BiscuitLover3678 · 05/04/2022 21:05

It’s like men who like a woman who can eat and doesn’t just eat salad. But he still assumes she’ll be a size 8. Confused

LittleBearPad · 05/04/2022 21:06

Is this because I called men ‘simple creatures’. They are - quite often.

As anyone who has ever asked their DH what they are thinking about will know.

That's another boring thing the same type of men say isn't it.....agree
HelpINeeedSomebody · 05/04/2022 21:07

I've heard this a lot and during the recent periods where I've been out dating.

Men have complimented me on being 'naturally pretty' when I'm sat there wearing a full face of make up, and I mean a full face of makeup, eyelash extensions, have highlighted hair, nail extensions and they all say it without a hint of irony.

I think it's a regional thing as so far I've had no fillers in my face or lips and don't wear extreme eyelashes extensions or have very dark brows which is so popular currently where I live in Merseyside.

seensome · 05/04/2022 21:08

Interesting they say it this, but when you see who they follow on social media, it's not normally real, no make up women is it, but filtered dolled up women.

I think they like the idea of a natural Beauty but more minimal make up than no make up.

RaRathebravemouse · 05/04/2022 21:09

I agree op

I think they mean not obvious make up and wouldn't know if a woman is wearing more subtle make up. I imagine they don't actually prefer women with no help at all.

RedskyThisNight · 05/04/2022 21:09

I’ve seen women on here loads be like “oh my husbands prefers me with no makeup, he likes the natural me, blah blah”. I can guarantee he doesn’t!

So you've never met my husband, but you think you know him better than I do after 25 years? Rubbish.

Makeup is literally designed to make a face anyone’s face look better by enhancing the features, concealing flaws, etc.

Define "better". My DH thinks I look better without makeup because that's how he's used to seeing me and anything else looks odd. He literally means "better to him" not better as measured on some generic aesthetic beauty scale. One person's flaw is another person's beauty mark.

i think it's a shame that so many people on this thread think they need makeup to look better.

XingMing · 05/04/2022 21:11

My obstetrician said once to me, in an ideal world, all mothers would be between 19 and 23. My reply, And in an ideal world, all fathers would be millionaires.

pastypirate · 05/04/2022 21:12

I think it's about keeping women down. Ime. It's a subtle attack and likely a hint of co ercive control.

worriedatthistime · 05/04/2022 21:12

@pastypirate any comment men that have shave chest is one, men that don't wear fake tan etc
Pick what you like

IcedPurple · 05/04/2022 21:12

This is ironic, because Blake Lively has bad both a nose and a boob job.

And the rest.

worriedatthistime · 05/04/2022 21:13

@RedskyThisNight Sounds like you never wear makeup so you can’t really comment. Sounds like your husband hasn’t got anything to compare it to. And yeah I still maintain that if you wore it and applied it well, he would think you look better

Well no. Those would be equivalent comments to saying to women they don't need to shave their legs etc.

I don’t think I’ve ever met a man with a fake tan.

Maybe I’m equally unobservant.
