How many portions of bolognese or chilli do you get from 450g mince?

Thinking of batch cooking a large pot and freezing some portions. It's only me that eats meat at home, so don't want any waste. Decent quality beef mince is about $7 a pound, how many portions would you get from this?

I have not cooked with mince for years and years!

@Wtfidiot. — yep me too!! 3 operations absolute tops— !!

WhyOfCourse · 04/04/2022 22:02

Add red lentils and veg and you can easily make 6

Crikeyalmighty · 04/04/2022 22:03

Portions that is !!

If I'm cooking for my teen sons that would only feed them, even in a bolognese, chilli, cottage pie etc

EatSleepReplete · 04/04/2022 22:06

I'd probably get 4-5 portions out of that - DH eats a massive portion & I eat a similar amount to DD (almost 10 but she can really put it away!) I'd add beans, peppers, onion & sweetcorn to the chilli. I'd add a large box of mushrooms, a pepper, a grated courgette, a grated carrot & an onion to the bolognese. It would have to be passata rather than tinned tomatoes though as DD won't touch them, the fussy little madam. I used to add lentils too but DH won't eat it (also fussy) so now I just do more vegetables. And a side salad. And garlic bread if I remember. They're like gannets...

LadyCatStark · 04/04/2022 22:07

2 adults, a child who eats adult sized portions, some plain mince for the dog and DS’s lunch for the next day.

CorvusPurpureus · 04/04/2022 22:07

8 portions easily, for me & 3 hungry teenagers.

However, I'm completely non purist about it - yes, I do know how to make a cracking proper bolognese sauce, but for everyday eating pretty much the entire contents of the fridge goes in in tiny dice via the mandoline, closely followed by half as much red lentils as beef mince, tons of chopped tomatoes & lots of homemade stock.

Seriously good over ripe local tomatoes are definitely my friend. I buy them by the kilo this time of year.

Then i leave the sauce to simmer for at least an hour, cook a bag of pasta & mix half the sauce through, freeze the other half of the sauce.

I'd expect to get a generous family meal for the 4 of us (salad on the side) plus a lunchbox of leftovers for me to take to work, & enough sauce to freeze & repeat.

If I was making a Proper Bolognese then as PP says, you'd feed 4. But if you're happy to bulk it out, 8 portions of 'pasta sauce with mince & lots of other stuff', easily.

450g pack of mince would make 2 bolognese meals for 4 here but I'd split the second meal into 2 and bulk one out with baked beans and peas and top with mash for a shepherds pie and bulk the other out with beans, chilli flakes and serve with wraps and guacamole and a sweetcorn salsa. So 12 servings but with quite a lot added.

The basic bolognese would have 2 cartons of passata, 3 onions and a lot of carrot courgette and celery whizzed up in the food processor so the meat content is quite stretched.

OneTC · 04/04/2022 22:08

Depends who's eating and if you're eating anything else, bread, starters, extras. I could serve 2-6 people

Me and OH could eat that in 2 servings if it's only with pasta and we were hungry

C'mon surely you can squeeze 16 portions out of 450g ?

thenewduchessoflapland · 04/04/2022 22:10

With there being 6 of us in our house and going through some very lean times in the past I've found that mince can be bulked out by all sorts and turned into so many different dishes.

I used to bizz carrot/onions/peppers/mushrooms/celery in the blender so it's finely chopped to add to bolognaise/chilli.

Frozen country veg mix, frozen peas and baked beans to beef stock/Worcestershire sauce/salt&pepper for a bulked out cottage pie.

Ragwort · 04/04/2022 22:12

Kneading - I agree ... Grin .... would make that amount for two servings (DH & I always have 'seconds') and maybe one serving left over for lunch the next day ....

Who would make it last 10 servings?? I wouldn't enjoy being a guest in that house!

Nnique · 04/04/2022 22:13

I’m hungry now! Grin

I think I’ve got chilli in the freezer...might have to put it on the menu for this week.

gogohm · 04/04/2022 22:14

6 normal adult portions, 4 generous ones, 8 healthy size Grin

WalkingOnSonshine · 04/04/2022 22:14

4x adult portions and 2x toddler portions - so probably 5 overall.

I tend to do a chilli/bolognaise/lasagne/gnocchi bake/pie/bobotie type thing once a week, to cover two meals.

puddlesofmothers · 04/04/2022 22:15

A portion of meat is usually 200-250grams per portion.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/04/2022 22:19

We get 750g packs. The dog gets 100g-ish raw as a treat. The rest does 3 adult portions and a small portion left to top a baked potato for lunch later in the week.

MidnightMeltdown · 04/04/2022 22:20

4 portions

MrsRhodes · 04/04/2022 22:20

I buy a kilo of mince and get a lasagne with 4 large servings and 2 lots of spag bol (but could stretch to 3 maybe 4 at an absolute pinch but we do have rather large appetites Blush

Confuuuzed · 04/04/2022 22:20

4-6 portions of bolognase - no chunky veg, just a smooth sauce comorising mainly homegrown tomatos.
About 8-10 of chilli - DC prefers the beans to the meat, so I'd usually put 3 assorted tins in with this quantity, plus double the toms or sauce that the meat quantity alone would suggest.

Bolognase I freeze in consistent (2-portion) sized batches, Chilli I vary a bit as we eat different quantities with rice / jacket potato / nachos.

Either supermarket 'best' or farmshop mince, about £4.50.

SmellyOldOwls · 04/04/2022 22:21

@sparepantsandtoothbrush

Oh god this is the MN chicken again isn't it? Who the fuck gets 8 or 10 adult portions out of 450g of mince? I don't care how much you're bulking it out, that's still not normal surely??
I would get loads out of it but that's because I hate mince Grin
MyDcAreMarvel · 04/04/2022 22:25

8 but 6 portions would be for primary age children. I cook in the slow cooker with lentils and peppers etc.

Rewis · 04/04/2022 22:26

In my household that would be 4 portions. Isn't is about 100 to 125g of mince considered the serving size.

To be fair, based on some serving sizes I by myself count as a family of 4.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/04/2022 22:27

It's hardly a "portion of mince" if the amount you're using per person is about a tablespoon bulked out with 300g lentils and tinned tomatoes Grin
