How many portions of bolognese or chilli do you get from 450g mince?

Thinking of batch cooking a large pot and freezing some portions. It's only me that eats meat at home, so don't want any waste. Decent quality beef mince is about $7 a pound, how many portions would you get from this?

I have not cooked with mince for years and years!

5 probably, maybe 6/7 for chilli
I did cottage pie with 500g mince this week and it made 5 portions

Sceptre86 · 04/04/2022 21:22

I could do 6 comfortably but it would be bulked out with onions, peppers, maybe carrots.

PukkaP · 04/04/2022 21:22

About 6. I grate carrot and courgettes into it to bulk it out.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/04/2022 21:22

Interesting thanks all, batch cooking is definitely the way forward for me I think!

Yes, I will add veg. Soffritto as bolognese base, but maybe I should also add mushrooms - do mushrooms freeze ok?

I do actually like cooking when I get engrossed in it. But am really lazy so having a good few portions in the freezer really appeals.

Um...5-ish? Would feed me, DH and 2 DC, with enough leftovers to either another meal for the DC, or 1-2 meals for my DM, who doesn't have a big appetite.

SwimBike007 · 04/04/2022 21:25

Try adding a tin of green lentils too really helps bulking out, healthy and looks like the mince when all mixed in with tinned tomatoes and veg.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 04/04/2022 21:26

8 or 9 adult portions. I bulk up with beans /lentils and veg.

Last time I'm made bolognaise it did 3 adults and 2 small children one night and 4 adults and 2 small children as leftovers.

DinosaursEatMan · 04/04/2022 21:27

Four to six for bolognaise, eight for chilli with the beans bulking it out.

SkankingWombat · 04/04/2022 21:27

I chuck a can of tinned lentils in with 500g mince to bulk out bolognese, along with some carrot and pepper, which I find will then give 2 adult and 2 child portions (all pretty generous) for dinner, plus enough for 2 smaller adult lunch portions the following day. I do the same when having tacos or any other mince-based meal.
I haven't made a meaty chilli for years (we cook veg ones instead), but would assume the added kidney beans would stretch it to 2 nights of generous portions for the whole family.

cornflakegirl · 04/04/2022 21:28

500g of mince would make 8 adult portions of bolognese or chilli for us. Bolognese I would bulk with grated carrot and grated courgette plus 4 tins of tomatoes, cooked down for at least an hour. Chilli 4 tins of tomatoes, 4 tins of kidney beans.

prettyLittlefool · 04/04/2022 21:28

That's 2 portions. Unless you are giving people homeopathic portions of meat.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 04/04/2022 21:29

Oh god this is the MN chicken again isn't it? Who the fuck gets 8 or 10 adult portions out of 450g of mince? I don't care how much you're bulking it out, that's still not normal surely??

nocoolnamesleft · 04/04/2022 21:29

This is mumsnet. You could feed the 5000 with that. And still have leftovers.

Greatoutdoors · 04/04/2022 21:29

3 for bolognese but we only put tomatoes, oxo and onion/garlic/herbs in. 4/5 for a chilli with beans in. Me and two teenage boys. I think we must be greedy.

PickAChew · 04/04/2022 21:30

4, maybe 5 with extra beans.

Forshorttheycallmecomp · 04/04/2022 21:30

2 adults, 3 children (one hungry, 2 less so), twice. Usually would have 2-3 onions, 5-6 carrots and a bit of celery in there. Even the smallest handful of lentils get spotted by my kids otherwise they’d go in too. Usually lasagne one day, Bolognese another.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/04/2022 21:31

Four tins of tomatoes??! Blimey. I use one.

merryhouse · 04/04/2022 21:32

I'd split that into eight.

I think I use a lot of vegetables.

merryhouse · 04/04/2022 21:33

Ooh, not that many vegetables. One tin of tomatoes Grin

Thursday37 · 04/04/2022 21:33

We are greedy buggers in this house, we’d get 4 adult and 2 toddler portions max but have been known to only get 2 adult and 2 toddler if really hungry.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/04/2022 21:33

I regularly make a red lentil veggie chilli at the moment, and love the versatility of lentils for all our vegetarian meals but because we have them quite a lot I don't necessarily want to add them to my delightfully meaty chilli Grin

My brain is having a hard time trying to estimate how much meat roughly equals the amount of lentils I usually put in the vegetarian version, though.

4 or 5.

MurmuratingStarling · 04/04/2022 21:33

Though we use QUORN mince as it's nicer.

NeverChange · 04/04/2022 21:34

Most recipes were there is little bulking it out with veg say 2 adults and 2 children.

Recipes with a lot of vegetables say 4 adults.

I put heaps of mushrooms in everything because I love them and get 6 portions for myself but any more than that it's vegetable pie rather the cottage pie.

drpet49 · 04/04/2022 21:35

4 portions
