How many portions of bolognese or chilli do you get from 450g mince?

Thinking of batch cooking a large pot and freezing some portions. It's only me that eats meat at home, so don't want any waste. Decent quality beef mince is about $7 a pound, how many portions would you get from this?

I have not cooked with mince for years and years!

We get 4 big portions but that could easily be done to 6 Smile

Sleepeatrepeat · 04/04/2022 21:09

Depending on how much I bulk it out with other stuff ie peppera, onions, chestnut mushrooms, baby plum tomatoes, carrots etc...I can get 6-8 portions and I have a big appetite

dementedpixie · 04/04/2022 21:10

Depends if you are bulking it out with other ingredients e.g. dh adds lots of beans and veg to his chilli

NothingIsWrong · 04/04/2022 21:10

I feed 5 with that, and can squeeze a tomorrow lunch of leftovers portion as well.

However if I wanted to stretch it, I'd chuck a can of baked beans and some chilli powder, sweetcorn and an extra tin of tomatoes. Prob get 8 portions of that

PurBal · 04/04/2022 21:10

Bolognese: 6
Chilli: 8
Approximately

Desmondo2021 · 04/04/2022 21:11

I think the packs I buy are 500gm for around £4 and it normally serves 3 adults and a child for dinner with 2 freezer portions put back

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 04/04/2022 21:11

Sliced peppers, onions and mushrooms. Chopped tomatoes, puree, garlic and mince. Herbs. (Spag Bol)

Save the left overs and add chilli powder, kidney beans, black beans and baked beans.

newmum0604 · 04/04/2022 21:11

4 or 5

UmbilicusProfundus · 04/04/2022 21:11

Not that much of a big appetite then @Sleepeatrepeat. How many meals does a Mumsnet chicken last you Wink

ColettesEarrings · 04/04/2022 21:12

Six full adult portions - I bulk with very large finely chopped onion, a very large grated carrot, and I'd use three tins of chopped tomatoes.

GiltEdges · 04/04/2022 21:13

We tend to buy 500g mince at a time to make a bolognese which feeds 2 adults and a child twice.

EatsQuorn · 04/04/2022 21:13

Grate a carrot or two into it , it will bulk of up and you will hardly know it's there . Really good idea if kids don't eat enough veg . Use the finer grate side of your grater !

Anomalocaris · 04/04/2022 21:14

6-8 depending what else goes in, if I've got bacon to use up it stretches further, and I prefer a more vegetably sauce.

justasoul · 04/04/2022 21:14

I’d probably get 2 dinners in my house, 2 adults and a teen who eats quite small portions still, so maybe 5 adult sized portions?

Sleepeatrepeat · 04/04/2022 21:14

I do tend to over do the pasta!!

I can't understand the chicken ones though. My mum can get a decent meal, sandwiches and soup out of one...I tend to.pick at it out the fridge so normal 1 meal of 3 of us and a sandwich

BulletTrain · 04/04/2022 21:15

4 of each. We don't like onions so just use mince, passata and carrots in spag bol, and mince, 2 tins of mixed beans and passata in chili.

Browncoo6 · 04/04/2022 21:15

Probably 6 but I would add kidney beans, mushrooms, courgette, carrot and pepper.

Nnique · 04/04/2022 21:17

I generally make 4 portions of pasta sauce for me and DH (so 2 meals) out of about half a kg. 100g protein per person is actually plenty, so you could stretch it to 5 portions for yourself if you wanted to. If it’s a veg-heavy pasta sauce I can get 3 meals out of it, so 6 individual portions.

Chilli stretches a lot further because I bulk it out with lots of beans and plenty of peppers. Plus we have pico de gallo/guacamole/etc on the side, and rice/tortilla chips/wedges for DH so I can get 4 or 5 meals out of it.

To begin with I would probably say it would easily cover 4 portions, but you could stretch it if needed.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/04/2022 21:17

Last week I managed to get 150g of mince to go for 2 large portions, a large lunch and a child's portion. There was a lot of carrot, pepper, onions and mushroom in it, and a handful of lentils too. We're moving house in a few weeks and eating some random stuff to empty the cupboards and freezers!

Gladioli23 · 04/04/2022 21:18

4 portions I think, but could bulk it out and stretch it probably to 6 if you wanted.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/04/2022 21:19

4or5.
Until recently it was 5or6 but both children seem to be having a growth spurt....

Wtfidiot · 04/04/2022 21:20

I made this at the weekend it only did 2 adults and 2 kids under 6!

Wtfidiot · 04/04/2022 21:20

Obviously we eat too much

PurBal · 04/04/2022 21:20

Ok, read more of the responses and I forgot people put things in their bolognese. I would call mince with “stuff” in savoury mince.

I treat bolognese as a pasta sauce, like a traditional ragu. So pasta is the main part of the dish then I make bolognese with a sofrito and mince (and a smidge of tomato purée and milk).

For chilli I bulk mine out with beans, I like to use different types and sometimes I add chickpeas too for texture (not traditional but nice).

I looove savoury mince though and I could make that stretch to 10 portions easily!

Bellyups · 04/04/2022 21:20

Bolognaise - 4
Chilli - 3 (we like big bowls)
