Is tesco rationing???

I'm trying to do the online shop here and not only is stock a bit shit, like no dishwasher salt, no pork mince, no organic cucumber, no most types of tomato, but I have noticed that a load of the things in my basket say I have reached my maximum quantity. So I am allowed one red pepper, one pack of two small salmon fillets, one pack of tomatoes, one cucumber.....I have a family of 6.

I haven't heard much recently on supply issues. But is anyone else finding this happening? Its a bit shit for a huge retailer.

We only have Tesco and M&S, M&S has been fine, but I've just been in Tesco and it looks like a horde of locusts has been through it. We also have a Co-op but that always looks shagged.

Honeyroar · 04/04/2022 22:02

@liveforsummer

I've just got back from Tesco 10 mins ago and the shelves were all full. Piles of all kinds of tomatoes, plenty cucumber and pepper. Wonder if they stock the stores before fulfilling online orders?
Our Tesco had hardly any tomatoes today. Yours must have them all!

Spanish Lorry Drivers have been on strike since March 14th in protest at fuel prices. They have temporarily suspended it today so supplies can get through to ports and Spanish food suppliers.
My friend in Spain the shortages are bad where she lives so we should be thankful for what we can get.
I was in Lidl today and that also looked like it had been burgled.

whynotwhatknot · 04/04/2022 22:05

my butter was subbed 3 times before my final checkout-havent been rationed though

tkwal · 04/04/2022 22:05

Problem with fruit and veg from Spain is that there was a dust cloud which affected quality and quantity of crops being harvested and tesco recommends washing all fresh produce

BarbaraofSeville · 04/04/2022 22:06

@Usingit

You can usually tell if something is in a bit of shorter supply when the price on Amazon goes up, my favourite soft Kleenex are now about £20 for 12 boxes, they used to be about £12-£14, they haven't gone up that much in the shops but they are not often in stock
Most groceries are quite a bit more expensive on Amazon. So it's not really an option to 'just get it by the dozen on Amazon' if your budget is for one box from Aldi or Tesco basics range.

Veg section was very depleted when we went to Morrisons earlier. But seeing as we were mainly there to put diesel in DPs car so he could work this week, we could cope with the lack of veg.

He'd tried to fill it up earlier today while out, but there were queues and they only had petrol anyway. Thankfully they had diesel as his light had already been on for about 30 miles.

No strawberries today and - weirdly - no fresh ginger.

The horror, Brexit has proven to be as dire as the predicted outcomes that where rubished as fear mongering.

We where warned that a vote for Brexit would result in WW3, and look what's happend

SniffMyQuiffyHair · 04/04/2022 22:24

On line shop today, only 3 subs that were probably better than I would choose
Got loo rolls, tomatoes, pasta and stir fry veg no problem

NeedAHoliday2021 · 04/04/2022 22:24

I’m surprised reading this. Family of 5 and my Asda order came last night with only two subs - 2 different mcvities biscuits instead of Asda own cheap ones for the dc (I can confirm they taste the same). Mind you, in the early pandemic Waitrose totally let me down despite having used them weekly previously, then tesco had no slots but Asda always came through for us so I’ve stuck with them. Really happy with quality and service (and price).

RightOnTheEdge · 04/04/2022 22:25

I got a Tesco delivery last week. A lot of items in my favourites list were out of stock then when it arrived I had a long list of missing items and substitutions. It was like going back to when we were in lockdown.

SniffMyQuiffyHair · 04/04/2022 22:30

@Justanotherlurker, nothing to do with the miles and miles of freight waiting to get back to their country to reload then?
Have you actually seen the queues? . SE Kent was gridlocked at the weekend

AChocolateOrangeaday · 04/04/2022 22:31

We are going to the USA in June for over 3 weeks and I have already started filling our cases with the food items DS17 will need whilst we are away. (He is severely autistic and will eat only certain items that we cannot get over there)

I shop online with Ocado, Asda and Iceland and each of them at various times put limits on how many of an item I can buy.

I've never had it instore yet though thankfully!

SmellyOldOwls · 04/04/2022 22:31

Now is the time for planting tomato seeds, and any other kind of veg you fancy growing Smile

hetty74 · 04/04/2022 22:35

Since the pandemic I can count on one hand the amount of online shops that have been 100% complete with no missing or sub items . This is a weekly shop with Morrisons . Prior to that the opposite was true .

Don’t be so ridiculous - and bloody rude. There’s no horror involved. I’m just intrigued as to what would cause an absence of ginger.

Went into tesco today, it looked like they had been burgled.
Same 😂

If you read Clarksons articles in the Times, he details what is happening to farming and food production thanks to the fuel crisis and its not pretty:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/f670d21e-aa96-11ec-9f8f-48b5aba04080?shareToken=a802cbf436f9d7be07b614c7bb92be7e

Because of rising gas prices caused by all sorts of world events, fertiliser prices have shot up from about £250 a tonne to three or four times that. Many farmers are therefore thinking about using less on their crops, which will reduce the yield.

That sounds bad, but they reckon that because 30 per cent of the world’s wheat and barley comes from Russia and Ukraine, the price of what they sell for will rise and therefore compensate for the miserable quantities that will result from using less fertiliser.

This “grow less but get more for it” philosophy may be right, but what if every farmer on earth went for the lower-yield option? There wouldn’t be enough food to go round. And pretty soon people would be beating their elderly next door neighbour over the head with a baseball bat to get at the contents of her bread bin.

I would love to but unfortunately live in a third floor flat with no outside space!
EatSleepRantRepeat · 04/04/2022 22:52

The tissues shortage has been going on for months, there was a massive strike in Feb in Finland at one of the world's biggest wood pulp companies which has affected tissues, loo roll, all kinds of paper.

There are limits to imports to the USA and the often have sniffer dogs in the exit queue from baggage reclaim. Just beware.

Brexit is ace isn't it. Just what we needed on top of covid and war.

Our nearest Waitrose always looks like that on the first and last day of the school holidays.

Has the whole world left the EU? Most of these issues are caused by globalisation and failures in the global supply chain. Maybe countries would be better off if their farmers were able to produce their own supply of basics instead of taking EU subsidies?

Loads of stuff was unavailable for me online yesterday. I went to the store after work today and they were pretty much fully stocked.
