Is tesco rationing???

I'm trying to do the online shop here and not only is stock a bit shit, like no dishwasher salt, no pork mince, no organic cucumber, no most types of tomato, but I have noticed that a load of the things in my basket say I have reached my maximum quantity. So I am allowed one red pepper, one pack of two small salmon fillets, one pack of tomatoes, one cucumber.....I have a family of 6.

I haven't heard much recently on supply issues. But is anyone else finding this happening? Its a bit shit for a huge retailer.

Not just Tesco, husband popped to an Asda earlier, said it looked like a soviet era shop, empty shelves all over the place.

jytdtysrht · 04/04/2022 21:32

If you want DW salt just get it on Amazon

GeneLovesJezebel · 04/04/2022 21:33

No, I’ve not had anything rationed, and I get a shop every week. There is the occasional substitute, but that’s it.

Viviennemary · 04/04/2022 21:34

I think rationing is a good idea. The bulk buying and hoarding at the beginning of the first lockdown was a disgrace.

CheshireChat · 04/04/2022 21:34

Dishwasher salt and rinse aid are more miss than hit for months now in my area.

Pythonesque · 04/04/2022 21:35

I was in Tesco last ? Thursday I think, and noticed a lot of places where one product overspilled into several areas. So, no iceberg lettuce but loads of round lettuces filling spaces that still had labels for other options that weren't there. And similar in other places.

Nsky · 04/04/2022 21:36

Aldi seems short on tissues, none for ages, limited amounts of canned tomatoes too.
Don’t eat baked beans tho

jytdtysrht · 04/04/2022 21:38

I don’t like the idea of rationing. When I shopped for my own family (incl 2 big teens, dog, 2 adults), my terminal dm/sf and my (now dead) FIL, people looked at me like I was a murderer. A Tesco employee was really rude and nasty to me, despite me not having broken their rules. I felt like saying why do you begrudge my terminal ill dm a box of baby wipes to wipe up my incontinent sf’s turf from the floor.

*turd!

TypicaIMe · 04/04/2022 21:40

I don't do an online shop so don't know about that, but I haven't been able to buy tomatoes for over a week. None in Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's or Asda near me.

Puffalicious · 04/04/2022 21:43

@Ducksurprise

Went into tesco today, it looked like they had been burgled.
Aldi was the same! Hardly a tomato to be had, no peppers at all. Plenty salad leaves/ fruits of all varieties/ fresh herbs, though. Also not a pack of block butter anywhere - couldn't get my preferred last week, none at all this week- and none in small Tesco/ Co-op.

Makes sense now I've read this.

I think those enormous queues at Dover due to Brexit and customs stuff on top of Easter tourist traffic and P&O grounded temporarily due to ‘issues’ after deciding to turn into total arsewipes might well be ‘part’ of the equation !! A lot of those lorries carry ‘stuff’ .

elbea · 04/04/2022 21:47

There has been a shortage of these things for weeks. It’s only going to get worse.

NFU is reporting British farmers will be growing about half of the normal numbers of cucumbers, peppers etc… Gas prices are a major issue. Include that it’s anticipated sunflower oil is due to run out in a few weeks as Ukraine is the worlds largest supplier. Lots of farmers are planing extra wheat and forgoing other things to make sure the lack of wheat supplies coming from the Ukraine are offset. We are currently still eating last years harvest - it’s the next year we’ll notice the difference.

It’s nothing to do with brexit - it’s to do with the international fuel shortages. Gas is used to produce fertiliser, farmers can’t afford as much fertiliser due to prices coupled with high fuel prices so they aren’t planting as many.

StrawberrySquash · 04/04/2022 21:47

Stuff's been low level out of stock/low on stock for a while. I guess some is Brexit, newer stuff like oil is Ukraine. And oil is in everything. There was also a fire at a crisp factory, I think. Supply chains are gummed up, I believe.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/04/2022 21:48

By the way if there are issues in Spain— no evidence of it whatsoever here in Copenhagen— totally full stock of everything !! I’m going to find UK a shock when we move back in 6 weeks

JinglingHellsBells · 04/04/2022 21:49

Cant say I've noticed anything odd in Waitrose except less choice of dishwasher tablets and black peppercorns seem a bit low.

There are queues of lorries at Dover- maybe some delay.

PuzzledObserver · 04/04/2022 21:50

We’ve found certain products have been out of stock more than in for a few months. Salted ridged crisps being one (all other types seem to be available), and we went weeks without being able to buy any tissues which weren’t scented, patterned or with balm stuff on them.

MossyBottom · 04/04/2022 21:51

Tissues and dishwasher salt have been scarce everywhere for weeks.

7catsisnotenough · 04/04/2022 21:51

No tinned tomatoes, microwave rice or skimmed milk in my local Lidl today. Baked beans finally back in stock after a couple of weeks but basic tinned pulses are still thin on the ground! Cat food is very hit and miss and has been for 6 - 8 weeks.

Mooloolabababy · 04/04/2022 21:51

I do a weekly Asda online shop for delivery and I've noticed that there seems a lot less availability of items recently, specifically teabags! I can't get decent teabags anymore online.

Floralnomad · 04/04/2022 21:54

It was like Christmas in our local Tesco today , I only popped in for parsley for the guinea pigs but it was absolutely heaving and there were no tomatoes and very few peppers

EwwSprouts · 04/04/2022 21:55

Was in Asda yesterday and no empty crates in veg/salad/fruit. Shopped for the week. Didn't spot any gaps on other shelves either.

Usingit · 04/04/2022 21:56

You can usually tell if something is in a bit of shorter supply when the price on Amazon goes up, my favourite soft Kleenex are now about £20 for 12 boxes, they used to be about £12-£14, they haven't gone up that much in the shops but they are not often in stock

Justanotherlurker · 04/04/2022 21:56

We are currently coming through the world wide shut down due to Covid, empty shelves are happening everywhere so those trying to shoe horn brexit into the situation are not really as up to date on the world wide issue at the minute, add to that the current situation in Ukraine and the navigation chanels that have been restricted it compounds the issue.

Anyone who was complaining that we didn't lock down harder and tougher should offer some self reflection in this, but they won't

JuliaSways · 04/04/2022 22:02

Home Bargains have supply issues at the moment, I've been to several different stores this past week (hosted a birthday party plus I stock up with cleaning products for my Job) and they are trying their best to make the shelves look normal but the goods are spaced out and rarely more than 1 item deep.
