If you have a room thermometer, how warm are your rooms?

My thermostat is in the hall and that's the coldest place in the house so I pay no mind to it. The heating is off now as I'm in debt to the fuel company and not wanting to use the heating unless absolutely necessary. We are using hot water bottles at night, minimising using the oven, the hot water is only on for an hour a day, I've got thermal curtains over the draughty front door and patio door and when the heating was being used I had half the radiators switched off.

I've ordered some room thermometers to see just how cold the main rooms are when we are complaining it's cold. If you have them, what is the temperature in your living room and bedrooms?

Problem with turning rads off is that the water will be returning to the boiler warmer than it should,so minimising the boiler going into condense mode, thereby wasting fuel

Lemonyfuckit · 03/04/2022 17:34

I was thinking of buying a thermometer as my office is on the north side and DH's is on the south and obviously with soaring energy bills we've been trying to be mindful how much the heating is on, but on days when I'm wfh in a room which I reckon is about 16 degrees, sitting still all day long at my computer I've just been an ice block, and that's with thermals, several jumpers and a body warmer on. We're comfortable enough to absorb the costs, we'll just cut back some other things but I really worry for people who have nothing more to cut back, this next winter is not going to be good.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 03/04/2022 17:44

20-22 degrees for the lounge, dining room, kitchen, bathroom. We don't heat 3 of the bedrooms though, because 2 are not used and our own bedroom doesn't need it (in fact, we have a fan on every night). It's South facing with a big bay window, the sun streams in all day.

bellabasset · 03/04/2022 17:50

My sitting room is 16°, without heating hoping to renew the boiler this year which will reduce my gas usage by a third. I'm in trousers, with a warm jumper.

Reduce hopefully by a third, just seriously more expensive to do it. Now we can only insulate to the hilt,

If you can, move the stat into the lounge,no one lives in a hall, why do they put these things in such a ridiculous place
StoneofDestiny · 03/04/2022 18:09

21, but sun is beaming in and we are insulated to the max.

StoneofDestiny · 03/04/2022 18:09

Sorry - no heating on, just sun.

mogsrus · 03/04/2022 18:10

Let’s all go to the energy companies & say, can’t pay this, can you imagine what would happen if 10 million people did that, I wonder?

SourMilkGhyll · 03/04/2022 18:23

10 degrees overnight.
12 degrees in living areas during the day and evening.
Not sure about the bedrooms, but probably 10-12 degrees.
I think I'm lucky in not feeling the cold much. It feels snug at 13 degrees and hot at 14 degrees.
Door and windows are open much of the day.

PurBal · 03/04/2022 18:44

Usually 18-20. Even with heating off at night it rarely drops below 16.

flower277 · 03/04/2022 18:47

Smart meter in living room says 21 degrees
Gro egg in our bedroom says 18.3 degrees

No heating on at the moment

TheChosenTwo · 03/04/2022 18:51

Thermostat in the front room where I currently am says it’s 23 degrees.
Bedrooms will be about 22. Kitchen is 23.
All other rooms are roughly the same except utility which is warmer as the tumble dryer is currently on.
Our house has got really good insulation (we have basically ripped the whole thing down bit by bit and rebuilt it while still living in it! It’s finally pretty much done now!), i was going to light the fire in a minute, not for warmth but for cosines as I don’t feel particularly warm.

Lottie4 · 03/04/2022 18:58

Our lounge is the warmest room (massive radiator) and varies from 17.3-19.1c if we've had the heating on at some point.

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2022 19:00

18.6 heating on for 1 hour at 6am

pinkstripeycat · 03/04/2022 19:44

13.8c as the heating is off and we’re all so cold 🥶

Hoppymclimpy · 03/04/2022 19:59

14 degrees in our lounge. Not had heating on since end of Feb. DD 11 and I are under blankets with hoodie/layer combos. I'm physically disabled and the cold isn't great for my joints but as we survive off my teacher's pension and PIP payments this is us now, like so many I know x

AlternativelyWired · 03/04/2022 21:21

It's like feast and famine reading all these posts. Ds is sleeping in with me and I'll make the most of it while he is little enough to want to do it. Dd is curled up with the cat. Her room is a degree warmer than anywhere else but she has some kind of circulation problem where her feet and hands go purple (not Reynauds) but she has sensory issues so won't wear socks unless it's with shoes. I'm going to order us some fluffy slippers I think. I have sensory issues too though and my feet get claustrophobic in socks and slippers so it's a tough one to balance between ice blocks for feet and quick get the socks off.

12.8 in the hall and dining room and kitchen this morning. 13.5 in the living room. No wonder it's felt cold lately, it is bloody cold! I'll soon be complaining it's too hot when the weather improves and it's anything above 22 degrees outside Grin I'm going to phone up to get a smart meter display thingy for the house. I've got smart meters but the gadget that came with it to put in the house and tell me what I was using never worked.

Without the heating on it’s generally 13° - 14.5°. I tend to just heat the room I’m in because my gas and electric has gone up to £270 a month 😬

Well, I'm going to say that you're unusual to find 14°c hot. The minimum temperature for the workplace is 18°c.
You must be tortured in the summer, but I suppose your heating bills are low.

Beetlewings · 04/04/2022 08:24

It's been 12.5 most mornings, got down to 10 that day last week though. But that's in the main part of the house which is all open plan (house renovators take note!) so we have taken to having breakfast and the kids get dressed in my room which is the only place that is cosy

BooksAndHooks · 04/04/2022 08:25

Bedroom is always warm above 18. Downstairs is 15 and feels freezing, the washing is taking days to dry. Trying to stop my hands and toes being numb and in agony is the problem. Wrist warmers don’t make a difference to me.

tackling · 04/04/2022 09:48

"You must be tortured in the summer, but I suppose your heating bills are low."

I'm not the person you replied to but as someone else who prefers and is used to the cold, I AM tortured in the summer, I spend a fortune on a portable air conditioner, so any savings on heating are lost.

I'm hoping against hope that we don't end up with months of 30 degrees like we did a few years back!

That's a shame that you have to spend so much on air conditioning. As you say, it's more energy and expense.
