If you have a room thermometer, how warm are your rooms?

My thermostat is in the hall and that's the coldest place in the house so I pay no mind to it. The heating is off now as I'm in debt to the fuel company and not wanting to use the heating unless absolutely necessary. We are using hot water bottles at night, minimising using the oven, the hot water is only on for an hour a day, I've got thermal curtains over the draughty front door and patio door and when the heating was being used I had half the radiators switched off.

I've ordered some room thermometers to see just how cold the main rooms are when we are complaining it's cold. If you have them, what is the temperature in your living room and bedrooms?

My main living space is 19oC. Upstairs is 18. It’s cool in the evenings so I light the fire. 20 - 21oC is a balmy temp for sitting on the sofa. Below 16oC (my boiler can be flakey so we get there often) is cold and very uncomfortable to sit in.

picklemewalnuts · 03/04/2022 12:00

We keep it at about 18 mornings and evenings as a general rule. We don't put it on in the day until it gets down to 16. If it's just me though, I'll go to bed. That was our usual habit before the bills went up. We'd put it on higher if we had visitors.

We've never had it on overnight.

Moody123 · 03/04/2022 12:05

Around 16 in the living room, we get a lot of sunlight in but it's open plan so looses a lot of heat ...
I used to like the whole house at 21 but just have it on every now and then to boost it up and have our jumper and blankets on, apart from DS who is just running round like a mad head in just his pants for some odd reason

Fluffy40 · 03/04/2022 12:10

Main room is about 19 degrees. Thermostat in hall is set to 17

LardyDee · 03/04/2022 12:12

@MurmuratingStarling

20-21 in the front (where the sun is streaming through.) 16-17 at the back. (Celsius obvs!)
Celsius obvs!

This opens up a whole new vista for the we-'ad-it-tough contingent.

Thee's mithering about it being 9°C in th'bedroom, th' great jessie? When I were a lass we DREAMED of 9°. And it were all Farenheit in them days Grin

ChoiceMummy · 03/04/2022 12:14

We've had the heating on this morning so gone from 12 degrees to 14 degrees in reception rooms!
1 bedroom is a suntrap so is a balmy 16 degrees!

Oncemoreforluck · 03/04/2022 12:16

Currently 16 degrees In Main room. I have a fleece jumper on and am warm enough. Heating comes on around 4pm and is set to 17 degrees currently, recently reduced from 19. Off over night then on for a couple of hours in the morning.
We are on oil heating here, and have about enough to last two weeks. Dreading having to fill it up this time round.
Our last top up was the most we’ve ever paid at 78p per litre. A neighbour topped up last week and had to pay £1.49 per litre.

BrioNotBiro · 03/04/2022 12:16

8 degrees in sitting room Shock as I've not got the heating on but I am snug under a heated throw.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 03/04/2022 12:21

My bedroom is 10° Sad

insancerre · 03/04/2022 12:22

My lounge is 25.3 - south facing and huge windows
My hall where the thermostat lives is 21.7- it’s draughty as we just have floorboards- we are getting new flooring in a couple of weeks
The heating was on for 2 hours this morning
The kitchen and back of the house are colder but I don’t spend much time in there

mizzo · 03/04/2022 12:26

18.5 in the hall and 22 in the conservatory, I've just taken my slippers off for a bit as I felt too hot. The heating was on for an hour this morning.

AnxiousHeffalump · 03/04/2022 12:37

Currently 15 in the lounge. The heating hasn’t been on today and we are trying to keep it off for now.

Parth · 03/04/2022 12:37

22.8 downstairs in the living-room
23.6 upstairs in our bedroom

Had the oven on before lunch so probably made it slightly warmer

FourChimneys · 03/04/2022 12:42

Our bedroom was 12 degrees this morning but I'm ok with that as I hate sleeping in a warm room.

The living room is currently 16 degrees due to the sun coming in. It will cool down later but we will try not to put the heating on.

Justanotherobserver · 03/04/2022 12:46

Bedroom is 13.5C, hall is 15C and the room I'm sitting in is 17.5C. It'll warm up later when I light the fire. It has a back boiler which does the radiators and hot water, which is handy.

Recycledblonde · 03/04/2022 12:53

Kitchen dining room where we spend most of our time is 21.1. We are very lucky we moved into this rented house last year. The insulation and double glazing are the dogs bollocks. Seriously well double glazed bifold doors and skylights make use of every bit of sunshine and it is south facing so very warm. We are so so lucky, our last 2 rented places were badly insulated and were always cold.

AnxiousSquirrel · 03/04/2022 12:56

15.5°c in the living room, bedroom is 17°c, pretty normal temperatures for our house

NewYearEveryYear · 03/04/2022 13:00

We've turned our thermostat down from 21 to 18.

So...18. practically everywhere except the utility room and back bedroom.

JudgeJ · 03/04/2022 13:05

@CliveThighs

Currently

living room (south facing) 19.3
Bedroom 1 (south facing) 18.1
Bedroom 2 (north facing) 17.7
Bedroom 3 (south facing) 18.3

Our heating came on for 30 minutes this morning, but as the house is mainly south facing it gets heated by sunlight during the day, so the temperature rises even if the heating is off as long as theres a bit on sunshine.

I never heat bedrooms unless a grandchild is staying and even they're not too bothered, my bedroom window is usually open too, I can't stand an over-heated bedroom.
JudgeJ · 03/04/2022 13:06

@PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn

My bedroom is 10° Sad
That would be great for me, I've been known to awake to snow on the inside window ledge!
mcplant · 03/04/2022 13:08

15 now. We'd usually have it warmer but have been cutting back since we knew there was going to be a price increase. It was hard the first few weeks but it's fine now once we've got used to it.

axolotlfloof · 03/04/2022 13:14

This seems pretty hot - I don't get why you want the heating on at. 25 degrees is unpleasantly hot.
Silverclocks · 03/04/2022 13:18

About 18.5 degrees in the heated rooms unless the sun's on the room. I don't heat the bedroom because that's how I like it.

Ordering room thermometers (plural) seems an odd way to save money. If you really need to measure the temperature buy one and move it around!

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/04/2022 13:20

We have thermostat set at 15 in the day time, 16 in the evening when we’re watching tv etc. and 9 overnight.

AlternativelyWired · 03/04/2022 13:20

I've ordered more than one as one is for my mum and also because different floors vary so much.
