I have emetophobia - it's the irrational fear of vomit. It's not so severe as others have it, but it means that I get mild panic attacks when others throw up, and even worse when people feel nauseous and might be sick (it's the anticipation that's the worst). As you can imagine with 2 young DC in the middle of tummy bug season I'm quite the nervous wreck atm! Luckily DH takes our DC when they're ill...

My family know about this as I've had it ever since being really young, but I was talking to DM the other day and she mentioned she had a phobia of bees and wasps. I was amazed I didn't know that already, and it got me thinking that maybe more people have phobias than I realise.

So does anyone out there have a phobia they want to share? As serious or as lighthearted as you want (this thread is one of my ways of coping!)

PS yes, I am seeking therapy, no, it's not the same as not liking it when people throw up, and no, it's not different when it's your own DC. Sadly. (all common responses I get when I tell people about this...)

Eyes. I can't even look at photos of a Scotch egg that has been cut in half because I think it looks like an eyeball. That Vision Express advert of the eyeballs as heads made me feel sick.

MissCrowley · 31/03/2022 22:01

I have the same sort of sickness phobia as you OP.
I remember once my poorly little 6 month old DD (almost 8 now) projectile vomited on our bed and I screamed and ran out of the room whilst leaving poor DH to deal with it.
I'm not good around vomit at all. Really freaks me out.

Also frogs. I get a weird feeling on my skin if I see one. I fucking hate them with a passion. The dog once chased one in the house whilst we were having dinner and I ran upstairs and locked myself in the bedroom until DH had got rid of it.
I make DH do quite a bit of stuff don't I whilst I'm locked away somewhere. Grin

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 31/03/2022 22:02

Choking and death are my fears. I can deal with other people dying but not the actual thought of me dying. I am seeking help but this has been an ongoing fear for many years

HalloHello · 31/03/2022 22:02

I have an extremely irrational fear of going to prison 😱 absolutely horrifies me. I obviously don't commit crimes anyway but still makes me absolutely sick to think about it. I watch loads of prison TV shows to try and help but it doesn't. The season of Prison Break where there in that south American prison is a huge trigger.

pinkstripeycat · 31/03/2022 22:04

I don’t see emetophobiaad irrational.
I have it and I’m terrified of getting a bug, can’t stand the noise, smell and feeling of being sick or the noise, smell of anyone else being sick.
To me, that’s not irrational at all.

Beachsidesunset · 31/03/2022 22:05

Swimming pool drains. Shudder. Deep water that I can't see the bottom of (thanks, Spielberg).

hopelessbusiness · 31/03/2022 22:05

Frogs and toads for me. Can't bear them. Think it's the unpredictability of them jumping - I have an irrational fear of them jumping on my chest or face, and clinging on like a limpet. And yes, I know toads don't jump but they look like frogs so...

Thismummyrunstheshow · 31/03/2022 22:05

Veins. I can't have them touched, I can't deal with them at all. I know they're pretty important but still pass out if I have to have bloods done. Sounds pathetic

BasiliskStare · 31/03/2022 22:06

Arachnophobia - and it is a proper screaming vomiting phobia not just a dislike - I can't see a photograph of one or even once I saw one of those furry scarves with the dangly bits off it on the floor & I shrieked and ran out of the shop. I know I could go to London Zoo and do a course but I can't even contemplate that.

Also heights and deep water with sides like locks , docks etc & huge ships looming with barnacles , rust etc.

changenametimeagain · 31/03/2022 22:08

Frogs. Couldn't believe it when they appeared in our garden when we moved to the countryside 😭

MrOllivander · 31/03/2022 22:10

Vomiting
Choking
Pistachio nuts (LONG story)

BigUpAllOfUshereOnMN · 31/03/2022 22:14

Local bridge with resident pigeons and the payment underneath all full of their mess

Sea of squirming maggots - bins in the height of summer

Gingernaut · 31/03/2022 22:14

Enochlophobia - not agoraphobia, but a fear of crowds themselves

Acrophobia - fear of heights

Shiningpath · 31/03/2022 22:15

Cotton wool balls (pads are fine)

lrosey · 31/03/2022 22:15

Severe emetephobia. If I feel sick I panic big time.
I don’t know how I got through my pregnancy -
20 weeks of all day nausea. Petrified of catching bugs, hate taking medication in case it’s a side effect, don’t really drink, paranoid about eating meat. It does rule my life if I’m totally honest. Also absolutely petrified of spiders but I’d rather do anything to do with spiders than to feel or be sick.

Rachaelrachael · 31/03/2022 22:16

Spiders
Vomiting
Wooden spoons. The way they feel makes me shudder

sausagepastapot · 31/03/2022 22:16

Heights. It's fucking annoying and stupid.

bangwhistle · 31/03/2022 22:16

Massive fear of general anaesthetic and dentists (related)

JerkintheMerkin · 31/03/2022 22:17

Kinemortophobia. I know zombies are not real but I have a thing about dead things really needing to stay that way.

BrokenNHS · 31/03/2022 22:18

Birds

lollipoprainbow · 31/03/2022 22:18

Birds especially seagulls, I freeze when I see them. It's the huge wings, sharp beaks and beady eyes.

Pigeons and seagulls here.

aylis · 31/03/2022 22:20

Claustrophobia. It took years to realise that’s what it was as I’d always associated it with things like lifts. Turns out it can actually manifest with masks, crowded trains, the dentist etc. I didn’t understand the claustrophobia was the actual cause of the fear of the dentist.

Also spiders. Common but shudder

Boiledbeetle · 31/03/2022 22:21

Beetles! Hate the fuckers, they give me the willies.

However, that is NOT why my user name is Boiledbeetle!
