DD being asked to design a torture method for homework??

milkysmum · 29/03/2022 16:46

DD has been set her history homework for this week. She has to design a ' new Tudor Torture device'. Draw it, label it etc and explain why it would be more effective than previous know torture devices! AIBU that this is a bit unnecessary? They are year 8. Do they really need to be encouraged to think of new ways to torture people!?

That's v odd. I'd send a note in saying DD is not completing this hw

fiftyandfat · 29/03/2022 16:49

Personally I think that is horrible. Very disturbing.

cloverlover · 29/03/2022 16:50

a bit strange! I can only imagine that they think it would engage their imagination, a bit like horrible histories does by making it gruesome.

fiftyandfat · 29/03/2022 16:50

Also, how is it relevant?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/03/2022 16:51

Imagine this could be read in two ways if you're a secondary school teacher Grin

Applecottage1234 · 29/03/2022 16:51

That is seriously inappropriate!

I’d actually contact the head teacher on this

galacticpixels · 29/03/2022 16:52

That's really messed up!

Popetthetreehugger · 29/03/2022 16:52

This wouldn’t sit well with me . I think it’s de humanising … fun ways to kill people ! Couldn’t they look at ways that they tried to help each other and see if it stoop test of time ? LikeThieves oil , used in the plague … still used today , still working?

SummerDays2020 · 29/03/2022 16:52

That's awful. At that age having to do something like that would have traumatised me and given me nightmares. Probably would still feel like that if I was made to do it now.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 29/03/2022 16:53

Huh. Pretty sure I had to do this for history homework too. (This would be almost 30 years ago)

Is there a context? i.e class discussion of how torture was used as a means of controlling through fear, etc etc.

MargaretThursday · 29/03/2022 16:54

Ds would have probably offered his sister singing. Grin

milkysmum · 29/03/2022 16:54

Just in case I'm missing any context of this homework request. DD is adamant she needs to do this as doesn't want to get in trouble. I told her I would contact school for her but she says that would just be embarrassing and she would still get detention!

As a school governor - whilst we don’t run the school, we do oversee and hold the school to account. I would be very unhappy both as a parent and as a Governor if this was suggested in my school.

Highly inappropriate - yes ok fine talk about the way things used to be and how the world has changed.

But do we torture now? No we do not. Therefore not appropriate

elfycat · 29/03/2022 16:55

Could she suggest making Tudor children do homework, as the torture itself?

HellToTheNope · 29/03/2022 16:56

Sounds like an interesting project to me.

Year 8, not 8 years old. What's the problem? Do you micromanage all of her homework??
eddiemairswife · 29/03/2022 16:59

Unfortunately we do torture people now.

Lovebroccoli · 29/03/2022 16:59

I don't think it's appropriate, there are plenty of other things to do with the Tudors. Why can't they design a Tudor garden, or a Tudor outfit, or piece of jewellery, for example?

thingymaboob · 29/03/2022 16:59

I would definitely be making a complaint. Really inappropriate and what exactly will they learn from this?! I think this is really sick.

Really is that your take on this,?

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/03/2022 17:00

I would have loved this as a homework. In English we devise a new spy device which gets them to think about why and how.
They are studying crime and punishment by the look of the worksheet - it links in. If they've watched Horrible Histories they will
Know all this stuff anyway.

milkysmum · 29/03/2022 17:00

No, I absolutely do not micromanage her homework. I was just struggling to see the relevance of getting teenagers to think up new ways to torture people- seems odd.

Well it probably wouldn't hurt (hah!) to get in touch with the history teacher and see if there's a bit more context to this.

Oh sweet summer child...

Hereward1332 · 29/03/2022 17:02

Presumably it will be leading up to a discussion on why torture does not work and should be consigned to the past. Without knowing the context of the course, I would trust the teachr is not a bloodthirsty idiot.
