Reading a Heat magazine and James (formally of Busted) mentioned living in the Hollywood hills. Also these 'Cribs' style programmes where someone who had one hit or was in one reality show has a great looking house... what's the secret?
Are they rented houses? Did James from Busted invest well? And how do people like Katie Price spend it all, she must have made loads with all the books, perfumes, tv shows? How??

I’ve just remembered that a lot that we’ve mentioned have weekly magazine columns in OK!, new, closer, etc
I wonder how much are they paid?

Although, since the invention of smart phones and websites, I’ve no idea who would buy those magazines anymore!

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 29/03/2022 15:25

Let me get this straight. Shitting in a jam jar and sending it by Hermes is ok. Rubbing shit into your nipples fine. Getting pissed on fine. Unprotected bum sex with a myriad of strangers excellent. Camel fucking = racist - ok then.

resets moral compass

Gonnagetgoing · 29/03/2022 15:44

@EdithRea

Yachting.

Basically prostitution aboard yachts with various wealthy men. Open industry secret.

www.yourtango.com/entertainment/what-is-yacht-girl-celeb-women-accused-yachting-hollywood

Now you know.

@EdithRea - wasn't Meghan Markle a yacht girl? Not saying she was a prostitute.
HollowedOut · 29/03/2022 15:45

@EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter no, none of that is fine. The fact is that many z list reality stars/ insta models make a lot of money by going to countries in the Middle East “yachting” or on “freebie holidays”. These trips are essentially prostitution, they know this and their clients know this. The racism comes in when people refer to these women as camel fuckers or Dubai Porta Potties, suggesting that men from the Middle East have a more perverted sexual appetite than those in the west.

You can debate the wrongs of prostitution, there are many, but to call prostitutes camel fuckers or toilets because they work for Middle Eastern men is undeniably racist.

riceuten · 29/03/2022 17:30

Probably on the never/never or credit cards

duffeldaisy · 29/03/2022 17:31

Nowadays, because of the number of underpaid jobs that people in the Arts usually work while honing their craft, a lot (not all) of those at the top had some kind of support while young, or came from wealthy families. So there's probably a fair percentage of them who didn't start from absolute zero.

Thank you

These women go to Maldives a lot as well, no one suggests they get shat on there.

And no, Meghan Markle was not a prostitute. More racist shit.

Mumontour85 · 29/03/2022 18:14

I think you're disregarding how huge Busted were back in the day! They did write a lot of their own songs and played their own instruments... he's dating/ married to a very successful YouTuber (whatever the fuck that is!), and probably bought his house outright when he was in his heyday. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere reasonably recently that he is releasing a new album sometime soon too so never really went away.

As for Katie Price, genuinely think a lot of her money has gone on her face! Scary as that is! (Her face and the waste of money!)

KatherineJaneway · 29/03/2022 18:16

Songwriters who keep the rights to their songs can clean up.

I don't know if it still happens but in the 90's some artists insisted on being put on the writing credits of songs they sung so they made money but they never actually wrote a word of it.

I thought the Dubai porta potty term was because they were literally being flown to Dubai and being paid to take part in scat play? Not because the clients were Middle Eastern (I’m not sure they are? It’s just a place with a lot of rich men).

I agree camel fucker sounds pretty bad.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/03/2022 19:27

I work in music and the well off ones in successful bands are always the songwriters, every time they get radio play, a song used in a film, advert , physical sales, streaming— a certain percentage goes to the songwriter— physical and digital royalties are ‘usually ‘ split in a bands case unless of course it’s a solo artist but publishing always goes to a combination of songwriter/publisher. Hence why the main songwriter/s in a band are always the wealthiest— that’s why Pete Townsend for instance will be a lot wealthier than Roger Daltrey (the Who)

TheHumanExperience · 29/03/2022 19:44

@likemindedarseholes

Help me out with James from Busted then. Not mega famous, I don't think they were the songwriters. Hollywood hills is pretty exclusive, if selling sunset is to be believed.
Think about it; property prices back then were much more affordable. If he wasn't into wasting his fortune on stupid displays of wealth: clothes, cars, watches, etc maybe he was wise and purchased a property. Not all people squander their wealth. Remember back in 2008 when everything went tits up.... property was cheap then, especially if it was a refurb. Just an idea.
Abraxan · 29/03/2022 19:46

@Funkyslippers

Yellownightmare how was Matt Willis able to pay off his mortgage thanks to Jonas Brothers when he didn't even write the song?
All three members of Busted, along with Tom Fletcher, are listed as the song writers of most Busted songs. It wasn't just James Bourne writing the songs.

Most seem to write for other bands as well, as is the case with many sing writers - they write for others, sometimes they write more for other bands than for themselves.

Darbs76 · 29/03/2022 19:47

I remember the take that programme before take that went back on tour and they did like a crib like shot of ‘whose house is this’ and everyone thought Robbie and it was Gary Barlow. Back then he wasn’t as big as he’s become in the last decade or so but he’s clearly invested well and he had a lot of royalties from songs he wrote

user1497207191 · 29/03/2022 19:54

Lots of things are provided free for publicity and marketing.

There was a TV prog a few months ago re the history of one of the posh London hotels and it said they provided free parties in the 20’s for the socialites of the time to get publicity and other richer people into the hotel in the hope of them staying and paying.

Same with the suites in hotels and cruise ships today, where slebs get free stays in return for the marketing opportunities.

On the Place in the Sun prog, a few times when showing the millionaire property, they’ve given the rate for rentals and said they’ve been used for photo shoots etc, which could well be for slab publicity.

Lovely13 · 29/03/2022 20:51

James wrote or co wrote lot of busted songs. They were huge. Good to see writers getting their reward.

sixoclockalready · 29/03/2022 20:59

James Busted may be minor to you and I but he (according to Wikipedia) wrote most of their songs

That's where the money is made

sixoclockalready · 29/03/2022 21:04

How much does the Dubai gig pay. Anyone know?

Lampzade · 29/03/2022 21:18

One of the ladies on Real Housewives of Atlanta has made a fortune writing songs for other people.
Apparently, Ed Sheeran had to pay her a fortune because he sampled some of her music.
There is a lot of money to be made in songwriting.
Rod Temperton (who was a British songwriter) wrote many of Michael Jackson’s hits including Thriller and Rock With You.
He also wrote hits for other well known singers, yet he was relatively unknown.
When he died it was discovered that he was worth about 100 million pounds.

I am loving the two separate conversations taking place on this thread.

Gonnagetgoing · 29/03/2022 21:36

@KitBumbleB - I didn’t say that Meghan Markle was a prostitute but it’s been said she was a yacht girl and they apparently give sexual favours (though some are also said to be taken advantage of sexually).

Lampzade · 29/03/2022 21:38

I can assure you that if Meghan Markle was a prostitute or gave sexual favours as a yacht girl the Daily Mail would have run the story. Leave the woman alone ffs
Lampzade · 29/03/2022 21:39

Sorry Motherdare that comment was meant for Gonna

MayaWasSackedForGCBeliefs · 29/03/2022 21:46

Paul McCartney is loads richer than Ringo Starr because he wrote on most of the Beatles songs.

U2 famously divided the songwriting royalties & credits equally between the four members regardless of who wrote the songs. This way all of the band members are equally wealthy or at least have the same earnings. If you have a band where one or two people write all the songs and the other members don't, the songwriters will be a lot richer than their band mates.

I guess this is one of the reasons why U2 survived as long as they have. Equality.

KitBumbleB · 29/03/2022 22:10

There is no evidence that Meghan Markle was a yacht girl, if she was do you not think the baying, frothing, mob at the Daily Mail would have exposed it by now?

Funny no one suggests that Sophie Winkleman slept her way into her acting career and then manipulated a poor Lord into marrying her so she could be in the Royal family.

Back to songwriting, Leigh-Anne and Jade from Little Mix wrote or co-wrote their songs and have written for others, they should hopefully have a stable career ahead of them
