How do seemingly minor celebs afford lavish lifestyles?

Reading a Heat magazine and James (formally of Busted) mentioned living in the Hollywood hills. Also these 'Cribs' style programmes where someone who had one hit or was in one reality show has a great looking house... what's the secret?
Are they rented houses? Did James from Busted invest well? And how do people like Katie Price spend it all, she must have made loads with all the books, perfumes, tv shows? How??

Fizbosshoes I didn’t know that about Craig
www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-37642088.amp
Which one from Bros you fancied was the question as a first year at secondary school!

Lollypop701 · 28/03/2022 13:18

Just Google how is made on Christmas songs .. such as Mariah Carey all I want for Christmas is you… some songs are printed cash!

@LaraDeSalle

James has a net worth of $1.5 million.
But that’s an average 3 bed London semi, not a mega yacht, designer clothes and mansion in Malibu.

I mean, it’s more than I’m worth, but the investment income from $1.5m is probably only about $50-75k, or £35-50k. Not “lifestyles of the rich and famous”. Unless he’s spending his capital, in which case it is going to run out.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_written_by_Diane_Warren

Read that list, all songs written by Diane Warren.

Warren and that Swedish bloke are the top dogs when it comes to songwriters (excluding those who also perform the songs).

“I Don’t want to Miss a Thing”, one of the greatest songs ever written, that had the Aerosmith fellas in tears when they first heard it after recording it.

Do people like Katie price get paid by tv companies? I ask this, as she is supposedly bankrupt, but is renovating her old home, that surely would have been seized by the bank? I really don't understand how all this works?
Of course!

A fee and a free reno.

@WhereIsMyBlind

Not related to James from Busted, but I know of someone totally unknown and unfamous who wrote a BeeGees song and literally lived off the very good royalties for the rest of their lives. Not in Hollywood Hills, but still had a comfortable existence and raised a family etc.
Sounds like the High Grant ‘one hit wonder’ film, About a Boy
MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/03/2022 13:49

@LethargeMarg

Betty boo is another early 90s fairly forgettable pop star who has written loads of well known big selling hits
I still know all the word to Doin' The Do Grin

I loved Betty.

Nothappyatwork · 28/03/2022 13:52

Matt Goss (Bros 90’s band) invested in a very beautiful house in London which I know for a fact he has previously rented rooms out in to make ends meet.

Snoozer11 · 28/03/2022 13:53

The Loose Women make £3000 per episode.

Linda Robson recently appeared and revealed that, despite appearing on a current affairs programme, she never watches the news, and she had heard "something" was happening in Ukraine but did not know what.

Good money if you can get it.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/03/2022 13:56

Tbf a quick wiki shows James Busted works hard. He has most the writing credits for Busted, had two other bands in between Busted / Busted / McBusted, has his own sportswear company which has a record label in the side, has done some musical theatre etc. He's late 30s and has worked consistently for nearly two decades I assume. Invest well, don't overspend, do stuff that keeps royalties rolling in

TreatTrimTame · 28/03/2022 13:56

@Funkyslippers

Yellownightmare how was Matt Willis able to pay off his mortgage thanks to Jonas Brothers when he didn't even write the song?
All 3 Busted boys (along with 1 other songwriter) were listed as songwriters on year 3000. As someone upthread said though, that could mean that some of those 4 just contributed one word to the song.
Bookescapeartist · 28/03/2022 13:57

Homes in the Hollywood hills same price as a home in West London, many modest homes up there as well as the mansions. If you get a property as soon as you have some decent income, that area is accessible to people earning less than you would think. It is just to do with being smart with money and not frittering it away and some people just understand money better than others. LA is still a little cheaper than London to buy a home I would say and even actors that you maye not recognize can do just fine- the key is buying a home as soon as you can whether you are an actor or any other job. Song writing pays well. Many actors over here get onto property development because the money is more reliable than waiting on a good gig. If you are even a minor actor in a big show you can pick up 15 k for the weekend at a fan convention and do a few of those and you quickly build up house deposits.

hangrylady · 28/03/2022 13:57

@Andgettingcaughtintherain

It’s going to come up at some point it always does on threads about how that group of people make money, so I am warning you now DO NOT Google Dubai escort or portapotty. Just don’t.
Off to Google bothGrin

I thought the BeeGees wrote all their own stuff?

@Dixiechickonhols

I think ones with talent like song writers are writing for other people. I recall a interview with Chesney Hawkes (one hit wonder) and he was in a beautiful house in LA overlooking ocean and basically saying people take the mickey but he’s built a nice life as a songwriter/producer.
A good example, although technically he had two hits ('I'm A Man Not A Boy', no. 27 !) Six if we allow the top 75.

@Rubyupbeat I imagine one of her limited companies owns the house, not directly her. She is a separate legal entity to her company. If the company went bust it would not impact on her and I assume the other way round (she would just step down as director and appoint a family member maybe). Someone with more knowledge on this may advise?
TheDuchessOfMN · 28/03/2022 14:09

I often wonder about this too.
Off the top of my head, Kerry Katona, Peter Andre and the cast from Geordie Shore Confused

TheyCallMeJune · 28/03/2022 14:25

Kerry Katona recently claimed to have earned £1million from Only Fans after her last bankruptcy.

It seems that if anyone is in the public eye, regardless of talent, they can generate money

MojoMoon · 28/03/2022 14:28

For the more obscure TOWIE/Love Island types, it's all a facade as people have already noted.

I saw one of them (can't recall the name, a younger colleague pointed them out) when we were at a fancy London restaurant. Minor reality person got changed into three different outfits and had photos taken at her table - she will drip feed those out to make it look like she goes at least three times a year to this one fancy restaurant. On practice she was there at midweek lunchtime where they offer a fixed menu with one glass of wine (still fairly pricey but much cheaper than dinner).

So for fifty quid, she has got three sets of different photos for "content".

I'd guess some of the clothes and accessories she was wearing were also borrowed/rented.

Cars are leased and they live at home with their mums/in fairly cheap flats out on the far reaches of Essex.

70kid · 28/03/2022 14:29

I remember Sting saying that when Every Breath Yoh take was sampled by Puff Daddy years ago it paid for his kids University fees in the states I think

nancy75 · 28/03/2022 14:36

A lot of the Towie cast have rich parents, Gemma Collins' family own a big haulage firm I think (when she did the lockdown shows she was living in an annexe of her brother's house)

Fizbosshoes · 28/03/2022 14:37

I often wonder about this too.

Kerry Katona has allegedly been bankrupt at least once, but she was in a very luxurious house in a recent series of Hunted, and had security, a driver etc

TheyCallMeJune · 28/03/2022 14:43

I think some of the Geordie Shores people spend a lot of time in Dubai.... (see upthread for explanation of Dubai 'work')

Dixiechickonhols · 28/03/2022 14:45

DadonIce I couldn’t have named any others of his! Nice current article and he’s aged well. His income is from 80s tours not songwriting apparently.
