To think tomorrow should be father's day

March is shit, clocks changing is even shitterer (note hospitality is mainly run by women) we don't even get a full 24 hours as mothers day.

I propose swapping with June father's day, football and rugby are over, weather is better and they get the full fucking 24 hours.

There's a reason Father's day is 9 months before Mother's day...

Agapornis · 26/03/2022 22:59

I (in the UK) would love a switch to May, though my mum (not in the UK) currently gets 2 mothers days, and my dad only 1...

Cheshirecatwoman · 26/03/2022 23:07

The problem with having 24 (or 23) hours relaxing with no jobs is that there is double the jobs to do the next day.

Dh spends so long planning and cooking a meal, there’s no time to do much else. Quicker to do it myself tbh with less mess made.

Then I get told to put feet up and not do washing etc, but it just piles up for next day. It would really help if someone did that too.

bruffin · 26/03/2022 23:20

@Tulipomania

Mother's Day used to be Mothering Sunday. It has been the same date for centuries and set according to the church calendar, so it changes every year - like Easter.

I'm pretty sure Father's Day is a made-up Hallmark holiday. Only been around for a few decades. We didn't have it at all when I was a kid.

Its a religious holiday based on the 4th sunday in lent. It was traditionally the day people visited their "mother church" which was often the church were baptised. Servants were given the day off to visit their "mother church" but it often meant they got to go home to visit their family and their mother.

Father’s Day is not historical in uk. Didn’t start until someone dreamed up in 1910 in USA. I believe didn’t even start to spread into uk until post ww2. I don’t remember it being a thing in uk until at least the 70s and then it was still pretty niche.

That's the real sneakiness. When Mother's Day started being celebrated as a day that acknowledged that women did most in the home, men decided they could have a treat day too even though most men don't do 50% of child care and household chores.

Re having a day off from Lent abstinences, my mum used to do that too. As Jesus only went to the desert for 40 days, I think it's a very good argument. The only downside would be that there's always some moany person who'd dismiss the achievement of giving up something for the whole of Lent by pointing out that one had had a day off.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/03/2022 07:03

Why are people complaining about the weather? It's great at the moment.

You can't reliably expect it to be any better in June and if Mother's Day was then, you'd be complaining the longer days were keeping your DC up later.

But you've got bigger problems if MD is your only chance to have a day off, lie in or do anything nice for yourself.

twosticksandanapple · 27/03/2022 07:27

@Skiptheheartsandflowers

Nope, got to be in this order so that if dads drop the ball on Mother's Day, you can be appropriately half arsed then on Father's Day. Otherwise men will get all the trimmings for their day and slack off in June.
Exactly. Father's Day really needs to be a week after Mother's Day to ensure that all Dad's get the exactly the same treatment that to they gave the Mum's.
WetLookKnitwear · 27/03/2022 07:35

YABU the clocks going forward has tricked my DD into getting up at 7 not 6 so I’ll take it.

MintJulia · 27/03/2022 07:44

I'm in the minority but I love this time of year.

I'm sitting in bed with my coffee, the sun pouring in, it's all cool and crisp outside, all the birds are singing, ds is still asleep, and the house is full of daffodils and tulips (went a bit mad yesterday).

Blissful Smile

Fairislefandango · 27/03/2022 07:52

I just can't really imagine why the extra hour or a different time of year would make any discernible difference. What is it you're wanting to do in that extra hour or in the (hardly reliably good in the UK) June weather which would make your experience of Mothers Day so much better?

From what I see on here and irl, mums aren't generally spending Mothers Day wild swimming, sunbathing etc. They are (if they're lucky) being pampered and waited on in their homes, or going out for a nice lunch etc. Not sure why that really necessitates perfect weather (which you rarely get in June anyway).

PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2022 08:30

Still laughing at all the people explaining it’s Mothering Sunday not Mother’s Day as if this is any way important or less a load of old bollocks.Grin

sixoclockalready · 27/03/2022 08:37

Funny as i was thinking this yesterday

ENoeuf · 27/03/2022 08:39

Oh no I’m really confused what time is it? Have to take kid to activity and totally forgotten the whole time thing. iPhone says 8.38

Wheniruletheworld · 27/03/2022 08:45

In the UK, Mother's Day is connected to Easter, so the date changes every year as Easter's date changes. Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday originated as a religious celebration that takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent. For girls/ women in domestic service, a full day off was given so they could go home for the day.
So, you need to be complaining to a higher authority than MN!

Wheniruletheworld · 27/03/2022 08:46

and it's juct cooincidental that this year it has fallen on the dayvthe clocks go forward as the date changes every year

Autumnleaves4 · 27/03/2022 08:51

No we should just have 2 mother’s days. Grin

Thatsplentyjack · 27/03/2022 08:53

Yes, I would like to swap but oy because my birthday always falls right next to it. Infact a couple of years ago it was on the same day so it ends up being lumped together. Fuck that! I want 2 separate days thank you.

Thatsplentyjack · 27/03/2022 08:56

@WetLookKnitwear

YABU the clocks going forward has tricked my DD into getting up at 7 not 6 so I’ll take it.
Hang on, that just means she got up at her usual time at 6am, it just says 7am on the clock. Or do you mean she got up when it said 8am on the clock so it was actually 7? 🤣
Thatsplentyjack · 27/03/2022 08:58

@ENoeuf your phone will change itself so that's the correct time. Check it against a clock or watch. They should be an hour behind now.

Tulipomania · 27/03/2022 08:59

Well it is important because the timing of Mother's Day is set by the church calendar and has been for centuries.

Changing it would be like deciding that Christmas Day should always be on the third Saturday of December.

JassyRadlett · 27/03/2022 09:00

@WisherWood

But mother's day doesn't always coincide with the clocks changing. It's mothering Sunday, the day you returned to your mother parish and it's the fourth Sunday of lent. Next year it will be the 19th March and so won't coincide with clock change.
It is definitely not a coincidence that Mother's Day is in Lent.
PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2022 09:09

Yep Christmas is another load of bollocks.Grin

ENoeuf · 27/03/2022 09:16

@Thatsplentyjack thank you - not sure why it’s thrown me today, we don’t have may ‘real’ clocks I’ll go hunting.
