Teenager that tragically died in Orlando

I have just looked at the Daily Fail headlines and a 14 year old has fallen from a ride and sadly died . Absolutely shocking and the poor guy wasn’t properly strapped in …he was overweight and was probably too embarrassed to get assistance with his seatbelt.
I am absolutely sickened by the comments from people, racist and fat shaming…where do these vile people get their thoughts from ? I despair 😞

OP posts:

So tragic. It is not fat shaming to say he shouldn't have been on the ride, should safety measures be ignored because we can't possibly tell the truth ? The over shoulder brace was never going to fasten and therefore he shouldn't have been allowed on the ride, safety is not optional.

WashedupTroll · 26/03/2022 07:59

Vintagecreamandcottagepie

Op, you were nothing but kind when starting this thread.

Thank you ..that was the reason for my thread…

You didn't start the thread to be kind, you started it to gossip and show mock outrage.

foamflower · 26/03/2022 07:59

@Firefly1987

I mean you're not going to expect something like that to happen, everyone must've been in total shock waiting to find out what exactly was going on and if someone else was going to do something...no one knows how they'd react in situations like that it's often the complete opposite of what you think you'd do.

This is quite errie for me as only a day or two ago I suddenly started thinking about another accident that happened where a boy died on some sort of log flume thing in the US a few years ago. I think he had managed to get on the ride but was too small and slipped out. Anyone know the one I'm talking about? Seems to be happening more and more often now very scary, poor lad horrific.

A child also died falling off a log flume in the UK a few years back. I’ve never felt very safe on them and I worry about my children going on them.

This is so tragic. He wasn’t checked and the ride wasn’t stopped so the group on the left could be checked. Cars have a beeping warning system when a seatbelt isn’t done up or a door is slightly open; I can’t believe there are no such security features for dangerous rides.

GeneLovesJezebel · 26/03/2022 08:00

About 20 years ago a young woman with Down’s Syndrome fell out of a Ferris wheel in this country and died. I always think of her when I see one.
Such a shame.

Thehop · 26/03/2022 08:02

I feel sick. Thy poor poor boy. His family must be devastated.

Flapjacker48 · 26/03/2022 08:04

If the harness wasn't engaged and the ride still operated then there is a fundamental existing or developed technical faults of the ride. There usually (has to be!) an interlock on all rides like this won't allow the ride to operate if safety conditions are not all met. The only it could operate without such safety conditions would be if a technician has overridden something (one of the prime causes of the smiler incident at Alton towers)

Teeturtle · 26/03/2022 08:09

I am a bit puzzled at this thread, because I have read the story in a number of places, including regular news and social media and I haven’t seen anything but shock, horror and sympathy to the boy and his family and friends.

And then there is this post about fat shaming.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 26/03/2022 08:09

It's terrible, all the rides I've been on they've gone round and checked you're locked in place. Granted all have been in the UK but you'd think the US would be as stringent.

Blinkingbatshit · 26/03/2022 08:11

@CurlyhairedAssassin - I had exactly that experience on the Drayton manor pirate ship, except I was the child in the scenario. It was truly terrifying and I have never ever been on a ride or to a theme park again. I had hoped that in the (many!) intervening years they might have tightened up the safety…obviously not, it’s an accident waiting to happen.

Papayamya · 26/03/2022 08:14

I think it's unfair to say OP is victim blaming, given that his father has said he was not allowed on other rides due to his height and weight but was 'waved on' to this one suggests it is relevant. As a 14 year old who is away with his football programme and sitting next to his 2 best friends on a ride after being rejected from the others; perhaps he did feel hesitant to say anything, he allegedly said to his friends he felt something was wrong and to tell his parents he loved them. Whatever the case is, OP has not said anything to suggest anyone is to blame aside from the ride operator who should have checked, which would have meant this preventable and heartbreaking tragedy wouldn't have happened. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

over2021 · 26/03/2022 08:27

I only hope he didn't know he wasn't secure on the way up. His death would have been very quick so the only Ray of hope was it happened in a flash, he had no idea and his last moments were having fun with his mates.

I hate rides. I have an overwhelming urge for self preservation.

MoniJitchell · 26/03/2022 08:29

@XenoBitch

I went to EuroDisney years back as a school kid. One of my peers went on a coaster that was loop the loop etc. They didn't properly check her buckle or the whole head rest thing. She was still trying to get it to jam in place once the ride was already moving. I am not surprised this happened. It is often teens that are running the rides too.
The same thing happened to me on the oblivion at alton towers when I was a schoolchild. The person sitting next to me had to help me secure my harness once the ride was already moving.

This incident is the fault of the park and staff operating the ride. It shouldn’t be possible to start the ride if all the restraints aren’t fully engaged. The reason why it wasn’t in neither here nor there. The safety protocols are either inadequate or the staff didn’t follow them.

Papayamya · 26/03/2022 08:45

Well for starters there shouldn't be the chance for people to 'break the rules', that's the point of having an attendant check everyone is secured onto the ride. Secondly as a 6'4 black teenager who played football to a high level even if he was slim he still wouldn't have been what you evidently consider to be 'normal' Hmm. We know nothing is designed to accommodate black bodies, Caucasian bodies and builds are the default for everything, rides included. He had been rejected from several rides that same evening so as he was told it was fine to go on this one I don't see why he wouldn't trust them.

Whitefire · 26/03/2022 08:52

Male Caucasian bodies and builds are the default. This is absolutely tragic but it makes you wonder how many near misses there has been.

babywalker56 · 26/03/2022 08:55

RIP to that poor boy. When his dad spoke to a newspaper he said that the boy spoke to his friends whilst on the ride and said ‘it’s moving, do you know what I mean. If I don’t make it down safely tell mum and dad that I love them.’ How sad and scary for a young boy to know that something bad may potentially happen.

I’ve watched the video and it seems to be a video of someone recording their friends (but you can see the boy towards the left hand side). The worker didn’t check the boy OR his friends at all! In a way I’m happy that there’s video evidence as that can’t be lied about. Either the worker was in shock but he didn’t seem at all phased when the poor boy was on the floor. People had to scream to call an ambulance because he had just fell.

I strongly agree with @jesuisavecukraine
When I read the OP, I literally said out loud ‘why the need to mention his weight, doesn’t make sense.’ I really do agree that you think because you’ve said it in a ‘nice way’ and not so blunt like people on DM that you’re not fat shaming. I read it as if you were fat shaming too🤷‍♀️

babywalker56 · 26/03/2022 08:57

The ride was only created in Dec 2021 so I wonder if there was some sort of error with the ride. Usually when you’re on rides that don’t have seatbelts, the restraints have to be clicked into a certain place for the ride to work. That’s why even if there’s empty seats, the workers still put the restraints down so the ride is able to start. Why wasn’t this the case here? Why wasn’t the restraints checked? This is just horrible

springtimeishereagain · 26/03/2022 08:57

It was clear from the photos I saw that his harness wasn't fastened, and the ride attendant should have noticed. They are completely culpable.

Absolutely horrific thing to happen. Poor Tyre, his family, and anyone who witnessed it. Shocking.

Yes that's very true and a good point (sadly).
ENoeuf · 26/03/2022 09:03

Yeah I read the op as a bit snide ‘maybe as he was so fat he was embarrassed to ask for help’ is a bit unnecessary and speculation - probably incorrect bearing in mind the boy was worried about his harness on the way up.

We have driven by there many times, I’d never go on those rides. Those parks seem badly operated with young teens working there. Poor boy.
