Teenager that tragically died in Orlando

I have just looked at the Daily Fail headlines and a 14 year old has fallen from a ride and sadly died . Absolutely shocking and the poor guy wasn’t properly strapped in …he was overweight and was probably too embarrassed to get assistance with his seatbelt.
I am absolutely sickened by the comments from people, racist and fat shaming…where do these vile people get their thoughts from ? I despair 😞

@CurlyhairedAssassin

Omg I had the exact same experience on the pirate ship at Drayton Manor with my then very small 9 year old daughter. She too slipped under the bars and the only thing stopping her was me desperately holding on to her with my arms, my legs and screaming for help. The ride staff weren't bothered, just shrugged. I absolutely agree there should be a minimum height and weight for ALL rides not just rollercoasters and maximum limits too.

Fizbosshoes · 26/03/2022 09:13

This is horrific and heartbreaking not only for his family but also his team mates who were with him and sitting next to him. They must have been terrified.
The DM article mentions a height limit but I'm not sure how this is relevant as its usually a minimum height limit and at 6'4, he's clearly going to reach that.
I too would have thought there was a safety mechanism that meant the ride would not start unless all seats were secured.

@LabelMaker People are curious, it's human nature for some to seek these sort of things out? Why does any site exist. Gore has always been popular. Same with True Crime videos/crime scene photos. It's human nature.

Oysterbabe · 26/03/2022 09:16

I think his height played as much as a role as his weight. In one of the photos you can see the bar can't pull down and lock because his shoulders are too high.
It's all irrelevant anyway, it's 100% the fault of those who designed and / or operated the ride. It is their responsibility to make sure its safe and to assess if someone can ride.

PinaColada123456 · 26/03/2022 09:17

Going by discussion over on DR there were no seatbelts on that ride. It was a bar locking mechanism that is supposed to click into place 3 times.

I suppose that is a point. It's not for me but yes I suppose some people are interested in death

bananabuddy3 · 26/03/2022 09:19

That poor boy and his family. To think you set off with your family on an amazing holiday and this happens.

I’ve been to Disney, universal etc many times. Someone always comes down the “ride vehicle and gives the safety bars or harnesses a tug. The more extreme rides, they give it a push to make it tighter and it sometimes hurts but ultimately they are pushing it in as tight as possible. I have seen many times staff attempting to fasten people in and saying sadly they need to get off - children, people that are too short, bigger people…..

I always get cautious of British theme parks for this reason, however much I love them, because the ride safety checks are often carried out by teenagers on minimum wage and to be frank, checking people are strapped in is a matter of life and death.

Someone here did not do their job, and as much as I say people love to find someone to blame and sue without just cause, this was a big human error and the person in charge of checking riders needs to be held responsible.

Yet most people can control their urges or wants (although I don't believe it's human nature and this is something most people want to see, I certainly have zero desire, I find it disgusting) to view photos and videos of someone's deceased or dying daughter, son, mother, father, friend. His family in this case have been posting on social media asking people to report the video as its obviously distressing for them and upsetting to know people are watching their son fall to his death. How would you feel if someone in your family was posted on a site like that and people were deriving enjoyment out of it?

jungledoc · 26/03/2022 09:20

@Ponoka7 I'm aware of that but as I said give it to the authorities or parents & let them have that choice. Or just show the beginning. Let's not pretend some people don't do it for likes.

case in point.

Exactly, I wouldn't want my loved one to be entertainment.

Don’t try and distance yourself by calling it the Daily Fail. There is only one thing worse than the Daily Mail, and that’s the sensation seeking readers.

Yep! I never get these posts when the OP says ‘reading on daily fail and etc.’ If it’s daily fail then why are you on there reading articles? Can’t take the fake wokeness on here. If you read DM then embrace it. Don’t come on here acting like it’s shit under your shoe when you check the site everyday lol

Florenz · 26/03/2022 09:29

They need to shut rides like this down and completely rethink things, they need trained professionals running them, not disinterested kids on minimum wage.

silversequin · 26/03/2022 09:34

This. My DH is 6’6”. We’ve only come across one ride with an official maximum height limit however there have been rides with no maximum height limit where the harness hasn’t closed fully because his shoulders are too high, so he’s got off.

The staff should ensure harnesses are secure on all rides - here they usually go around pushing/ pulling them to check, and from the comments above there was also a light system on this ride.

TerraNovaTwo · 26/03/2022 09:41

Teenager who died. They were a person, not an object. Hmm

chaosrabbitland · 26/03/2022 09:53

it does sound horrifying indeed , i can tell from the poor quality of the photo if he was strapped in or not properly , but obviously the park failed badly in not checking if he was . it does say he had been turned away from other rides because of his weight , but they just waved him onto this one , sadly from what his friend has said the lad appeared to know he wasnt strapped in properly and yet didnt get off , its such a shame he didnt just have the confidence to just get up and walk away from it

jungledoc · 26/03/2022 09:58

He probably didn't realise until it was too late.

PersephonePomegranate · 26/03/2022 09:58

The operators push the harness into place and they are completely locked then and cannot budge. They only open a few moments after the ride stops when they all unclick together and go up and I am assuming that it is the ride operator that does that with a button or something..but there's no way to take it off yourself.

Yes, that's my experience with any of these types of rides. Even when it's stopped, it requires the operator to centrally release the safe harnesses.

Whether it's an operator or machinery malfunction - or both of those things, it's certainly not a 14 year old boy's fault.

The whole thing is horrific.

diddl · 26/03/2022 09:59

I'm only 5ft tall so presumably wouldn't be allowed on it?

Surely if someone can be too short for it to be safe then someone can also be too tall?

PersephonePomegranate · 26/03/2022 10:05

sadly from what his friend has said the lad appeared to know he wasnt strapped in properly and yet didnt get off , its such a shame he didnt just have the confidence to just get up and walk away from it

I still remember the blind confidence I had when I was 14 and the belief that nothing bad world ever happen to me; especially when the options were either doing something fun or not getting to do the fun thing. It's the way many teenagers are built!

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 26/03/2022 10:32

Same thing happened to me as a child at Chessington on the magic carpet.
My dad was 6ft 4 and it was just a lap bar, I still remember the terror.
This poor kid :( so sad that it could easily have been prevented.

SophieSoSo · 26/03/2022 10:39

Is this the light people are referring to? It’s on in this photo?

Onlyforcake · 26/03/2022 10:45

My husband always checks the weight restrictions on rides as he's very broad. He has got off rides before when he has found he can force open a fastening. I've also seen a frustrated teen climb out of a fastened harness waiting to be let off the ride. Which kind of makes me realise how unsafe particularly slim people could be too. I've been nope about rides for years. No idea why people do it.

Whoops I thought I had replied to somebody post. Obviously I didn't actually fall out just felt like it!
Maves · 26/03/2022 11:12

This is so sad and is 100 percent the parks fault for not checking. I looked at a couple of em comments and felt sick he was a CHILD
Is it because he's bigger/taller people are forgetting this. A 14 year old how any of these sick trolls can be so cruel is hard to even comprehend.

AuntViv · 26/03/2022 11:18

Wasn't that allegedly when the ride had started when he apparently said 'it was moving' and something didn't feel right. Probably by that point he's on his way up and can't just get off.
