Teenager that tragically died in Orlando

Pointlesspolice · 25/03/2022 20:59

I have just looked at the Daily Fail headlines and a 14 year old has fallen from a ride and sadly died . Absolutely shocking and the poor guy wasn’t properly strapped in …he was overweight and was probably too embarrassed to get assistance with his seatbelt.
I am absolutely sickened by the comments from people, racist and fat shaming…where do these vile people get their thoughts from ? I despair 😞

@HellToTheNope
No one should be even able to “open the harness” themselves that easily before the ride starts, don’t you think? I mean, safety and all that. Otherwise children of all ages should be able to fiddle with the harness and open it and then fall to death.

Pointlesspolice · 25/03/2022 22:43
@jesuisavecukraine is that victim blaming?
Thank you.ax

How awful. These rides can be so dangerous. A few years ago I was waiting for one of the rides when I saw a woman in a seat where the bar had trapped her head on its side - and they started the ride until I ran out and stopped them. Completely irresponsible and she could have broken her neck if the ride had got going. Staff too busy gassing when they should have been checking.

That poor boy - not sure if I can read the article.

Workinghardeveryday · 25/03/2022 22:44

That poor boy and his family

KaptainKaveman · 25/03/2022 22:45

@jesuisavecukraine

Oyou are doing a poor job of suporting the OP.

OK include the next sentence from OP and it makes her even more UR as she is also a hypocrite as well as a victim blamer.

She says (paraphrasing) the boy is overweight and probably too embarrassed to say anything.

Next sentence, but people on other sites are bue for fat shaming him.
Total hypocrisy, fat shaming and victim blaming in those 2 exerts from OP.

What is an "exert"? Do you mean "excerpt"? Get it right ffs.
Bellagio40 · 25/03/2022 22:45

Absolutely heartbreaking

Pointlesspolice · 25/03/2022 22:45

@Dontcallmebabylalala

It’s a horrible tragedy. I feel sick knowing I allowed my children to go on similar rides. Now if something can come out of this young men’s death is people thinking twice before using the rides like this. Is it really worth to risk your life like this? This kind of experience is now off my list. People checking the safety are usually so young. And I did think there’s an automated system that wouldn’t allow the ride to start unless everything is locked. Obviously not. Poor poor child, poor parents.
That’s what I thought…an alarm ,ride cannot start or something similar !

Of course no one should be able to open the harness but this situation isn't about what we think. It's about facts that have yet to be determined.

jesuisavecukraine · 25/03/2022 22:48

@Pointlesspolice i havd read it several times and it still comes across as fat shaming (as well as hyporcritical) which is what you have complained of others doing.

His weight is irrelevant and does not need mentioning. He is 14 and none of this was his fault. It was either a faulty ride or human error for not checking his harness was secure.

Like I say you can be as "nice" as you like in the way you call him fat and too embarrassed, but it doesn't take away from what you said.
An insult said with a smile is still an insult.

jesuisavecukraine · 25/03/2022 22:50

@kaptainkaveman well thank god mumsnet isn't a spelling and grammar test, as we'd all fail, you included.

Rockhopper81 · 25/03/2022 22:50

The theme parks in Orlando - as in, Disney/Universal etc. - are very 'hot' on ride safety, and a lot of the rides that aren't universal rides (i.e. they have a height requirement) have test seats before the queue, and members of staff there will ask you to try the test seat before you join the queue, saying they "can't accommodate you today" if you don't fit or can't get the harness far enough down. These are generally stricter than the rides themselves, as they want to be doubly sure you'll be safe.

I can't speak for the more individual rides, as at Icon, other places on International Drive, and the 192 - I haven't been on them - but there's a number of 'super thrill' rides about that make Disney/Universal rides look tame. It will be interesting to see what comes of the investigation, as something has obviously gone catastrophically wrong here - whatever that is, a family are without someone today in tragic circumstances. It's horrific for them, and the people who witnessed it too - you don't forget seeing something like that.

Pointlesspolice · 25/03/2022 22:51
@newgymmy yes it is as OP has said the vile comments in the DM fat shaming and blaming him, whilst she is doing exsctly the ssme
she is saying he was overweight and probably too embarrassed to say his harness wasn't locked.
Doesn't matter how nice OP says it she is still implying he is responsible as he was overweight and uncomfortable saying anything whilst calling out others for saying the same.
You really have twisted everything I have said to suit your own narrative…off you trot…am not replying to any more of your comments!

OP posts:
jesuisavecukraine · 25/03/2022 22:57

@Pointlesspolice don't read or comment on my observations, it's neither here nor there to me.
No I've taken it exactly as you've written it, called him overweight and then complained others have done the same.
And no I won't trot off, you don't own mumsnet and don't dictate who can and cannot contribute, just because you didn't like people being annoyed at your hypocrasy around a dead child.

jungledoc · 25/03/2022 22:57

How tragic, I assumed they would check all the seats to make sure they safety equipment is as it should be.

jungledoc · 25/03/2022 22:59

Someone's posted a video of it on Twitter. Absolutely fucking disgusting. Why do people think it's ok to post shit like this?

Sadly likes trump dignity & privacy of others for some.

jungledoc · 25/03/2022 23:00

His weight is not a factor in this negligence.

agree

Icecreamandapplepie · 25/03/2022 23:01

Op, you were nothing but kind when starting this thread.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 25/03/2022 23:03

Don’t read the DM articles or comments. They are hate-filled pure evil. Those people hate everyone and anything. Don’t give it clicks (which finance it).

Hotelhelp · 25/03/2022 23:04

I already don't like my children going on rides even the waltzers type rides but now there's just no way in hell I'd allow them to go on something like this.

Even makes me wary of Disney although when I have been (Paris) you do feel safe and they do check you.

I just keep thinking how scared he must have been and everyone who saw that - their lives have changed irrevocably. It's tragic

kittensinthekitchen · 25/03/2022 23:04

Ok, against my better judgement, I watched the video. One of my kids loves these rides, I wanted to see what the safety protocol was.

Someone watching was recording their friends/family/whatever waiting for the ride to start. The crew member spends over a minute chatting with some riders.
He doesn't go round the other seats to check them.
As he comes back to start the ride, someone shouts and asks him if he checked all the belts.
He says yes.
He didn't double check.

Afterwards, he can be seen being asked if he definitely checked them. He says yes.

Daqqe · 25/03/2022 23:05

Just awful. I love rollercoasters & I will continue to enjoy them as thankfully, this kinda thing is extremely rare. But I can’t even imagine the horror. I used to have a repeating nightmare about falling from the top of ice blast at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.. I’d wake up sweating.

Thoughts are with this poor boy & his family 💔

I havnt seen the video and am definitely not going to look at it …an absolute tragedy. Cannot imagine how his family and friends are coping with this ! Am so shocked that people on SM have been so disrespectful…which was the point of my OP but sadly twisted by another PP !

Disgusting trolls!!!!! Targeting a young child and a deceased young child at that.

This is heartwrenching. Poor little one. All that future a head of him.
God be with his poor parents and extended family, too.

And he gets more hate because hes black, poor boy. It's tragic.
