Got a joiner in fitting flooring this week. From the moment I opened the door to him on his first day he made it clear he wasn’t happy. I said hello and introduced myself and he just sort of grunted.

When the shop owner came out to measure up he told me the joiner could work around my couch. The joiner automatically says that’ll need to be moved (my couch) and that he wasn’t doing it. I said that’s ok and moved it with OH.

Today he didn’t turn up til 12 o’clock. He doesn’t say bye either when he’s done. He just leaves. He sighs all day long and swears at himself. He doesn’t greet me at all when I walk past him and if I try and make conversation he makes it clear he doesn’t want to chat.

The shop told me he’d be finished today (although he’s no where near done). I said do you think you’ll be finished today? He said no and I’ve worked 3 weekends in a row so I’m not working.

Then I heard him on the phone to someone there complaining about his jobs and how busy he is.

It’s so uncomfortable and I’m really thinking about saying something to the shop.

I’d definitely consider it rude and would definitely say something. He’s made you feel uncomfortable in your own home all week.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/03/2022 13:23

I would weigh up the rudeness against how good his work is to be honest!

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 13:25

His work it good, but it’s painfully slow. Especially when he doesn’t turn up til 12 o’clock then sits on his phone moaning constantly. I can’t wait til he’s gone. I offered him a drink and he perked up for a minute but not much. He is clearly over worked and miserable.

Oh and he’s sawing all the wood in my living room. The dust is everywhere. I thought he’d at least do it outside. Is this unreasonable?

He sounds awful. I would tell the shop to at least employ fitters who show a but of enthusiasm for the job!! And yes most workmen Ive met do their sawing outside!!

Horcruxe · 25/03/2022 13:33

I'm sorry I know this doesnt help you.

But from getting touch with the shop to getting the flooring done.

How long did it take? Is there a long lead time?

Itloggedmeoutagain · 25/03/2022 13:33

Maybe if he turned up before 12 he wouldn't need to work the weekend

UnsuitableHat · 25/03/2022 13:35

I wouldn't be that bothered about the lack of friendliness - his manner is his manner - but might say something to the shop about the work taking much longer than you expected.

Marvellousmadness · 25/03/2022 14:00

Complain to the shop.
Ask the man to stop swearing
And tell him to saw outside

Speak up please op x

luna32 · 25/03/2022 14:04

OP stop taking his shit & complain about him. You don't need his negative energy in your home. Complain and say that from tomorrow you want someone else.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/03/2022 14:30

Rude!!!!!!!. I find it uncouth never mind rude!!!!!! Does this prick not actually want any work because It seems like you're inconveniencing him to be honest. I'd be getting rid. You're doing him the favor by giving him the work not the other way round

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/03/2022 14:33

No one is saying he should turn up like the Court Jester but a little Hello or good morning/afternoon wouldn't hurt him, would it

JudgeRindersMinder · 25/03/2022 14:35

Why I’m earth haven’t you asked him to saw outside?

girlmom21 · 25/03/2022 14:35

I would expect him to saw outside but I wouldn't complain until he's finished if he's good

billy1966 · 25/03/2022 14:42

Him sawing in the house is pure laziness and disgraceful.

Absolutely disgraceful.

I would tell the company that you are deeply unhappy.

NOBODY cuts bloody wood in a house, unless they are a cowboy.

SartresSoul · 25/03/2022 14:47

Does he actually want a job? He certainly isn’t acting like it. Call the boss and tell him you’d prefer it if someone else could do the work. He should be sawing outside, he sounds like a lazy miserable twat.

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 18:59

Ok just seen his work today and I’m not happy with the standard. What are your thoughts? Is this normal (the gaps etc). He’s not finished so could still make it good but I’m worried

We had joiners in to make us a fitted wardrobe. They arrived at 9am, did all the sawing outside and hoovered up before they left. I offered tea and coffee which they had and they did the work in half a day. He sounds unpleasant.

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 19:20

Oh no I wouldn't be happy with that! Is the shop open tomorrow? That's loads of bloody sawdust in the gaps too!

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 19:26

Yes it’s open but I’m concerned if we raise it now they won’t return. We have paid £3000 and owe another £1000

I'd go to the shop with the pictures. It means they don't have time to make excuses or wriggle out of anything.

Tell them you want a new tradesperson and the work redone or your £3000 back.

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 19:28

I’m worried we end up in a dispute with them and it gets left like this. Atleast if the finish the job we can refuse the £1000 balance

LeroyJenkinssss · 25/03/2022 19:32

Oof I wouldn’t be happy with that. We have had our entire downstairs floor done and whilst it’s not done in the same way as that the joins are perfect and the joiner (who also wasn’t chatty) left everything tidy at the end of the day. And we aren’t even in the property to notice. No tools were left at all.
