Got a joiner in fitting flooring this week. From the moment I opened the door to him on his first day he made it clear he wasn’t happy. I said hello and introduced myself and he just sort of grunted.

When the shop owner came out to measure up he told me the joiner could work around my couch. The joiner automatically says that’ll need to be moved (my couch) and that he wasn’t doing it. I said that’s ok and moved it with OH.

Today he didn’t turn up til 12 o’clock. He doesn’t say bye either when he’s done. He just leaves. He sighs all day long and swears at himself. He doesn’t greet me at all when I walk past him and if I try and make conversation he makes it clear he doesn’t want to chat.

The shop told me he’d be finished today (although he’s no where near done). I said do you think you’ll be finished today? He said no and I’ve worked 3 weekends in a row so I’m not working.

Then I heard him on the phone to someone there complaining about his jobs and how busy he is.

It’s so uncomfortable and I’m really thinking about saying something to the shop.

That's not up to standard. Show the shop the pictures - keep factual with what you're unhappy about and don't mention his behaviour but stick to facts like his lateness and sub standard finish (although I agree, his grumpiness is terribly unprofessional).

BornBlonde · 25/03/2022 19:34

You're right to be annoyed! I would have asked him to saw outside, doing it inside is unacceptable.

You need to complain about the standard of the work no point in him continuing

LabelMaker · 25/03/2022 19:38

Oh I'm sorry OP that's terrible

girlmom21 · 25/03/2022 19:44

@Coffeekam

I’m worried we end up in a dispute with them and it gets left like this. Atleast if the finish the job we can refuse the £1000 balance
If it gets left you'll get a competent tradesperson in to fix the issue.

Is the shop a small local business or nationwide?

HisHX · 25/03/2022 19:45

That ‘work’ is absolutely atrocious. Just no way on Earth I’d be paying for that, attitude aside. Complain, take pictures, ask for it to be redone or take them to small claims court. I could do better myself.

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 19:46

If it’s left I’ll be thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Booboobagins · 25/03/2022 19:48

It is rude, but you have no idea why he is behaving like that. I'd have asked him if he's OK and let him get it off his chest.

I'd probably speak to the shop as he's not finished rather than how he is, but good luck finding someone else at short notice..... its a nightmare at tge getting any jobs done.

NameChanged15729 · 25/03/2022 19:49

Can you be out when he comes over? I try and engineer workmen coming to the house on dh’s days off because I’m socially awkward and don’t like people.

On a completely unrelated note, for a second I thought this was the good old carpet fitter storms off thread brought back to life for the zillionth time Grin

Does he get paid by the shop per job or a hourly rate, to me it looks like he is dragging it out he should be a lot quicker and you should have your rooms back by now

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 19:56

£2000 paid by debit card. £1000 by credit card. Could I get this back?

Luckymummytoone · 25/03/2022 20:01

They don’t even line up properly! That’s shocking I’d definitely be complaining and asking for it to be redone x

comfortablyfrumpy · 25/03/2022 20:08

Complain now. That is unacceptable work.
Good that you paid by c card - I think that affords you some protection.

sweetbellyhigh · 25/03/2022 20:12

He'll have to come back at least for tools.

Your joiner is rude and grossly unprofessional, and there is no reason why you should accept this.

Take back the power here.

As suggested above, go to the shop with the photos.

Tell them how concerned you are, how offended you feel by his manner, and how inconvenienced you are by his unprofessionalism.

You need to take someone with you and while I hate to say it, they'll take you more seriously if there is a man with you 🙄

Coffeekam · 25/03/2022 20:14

Thanks. We are going in tomorrow with the photos.

Ring the bank which issued the cards and see if you would get your money back. I would have thought you would.

KeepYaHeadUp · 25/03/2022 20:30

That is shockingly bad. Have they got a social media presence (ie do you think they're likely to care about their reputation)? How about reviews online? I would say something sooner rather than later.

Waterfallgirl · 25/03/2022 20:35

Don’t let the workman finish before you say anything, he has already used and damaged a lot of wood so far .
I’d expect the shop / business owner to come out to see you to be honest.

overnightangel · 25/03/2022 21:07

The standard of that work is so far beyond unacceptable 😓
Money back or redone completely from scratch. I’d say to the shop unless you’d be willing to advertise your services with pictures of that work it’s not going in my house

Coffeekam · 28/03/2022 10:58

So the shop has came out. Agreed to lift and refit. They are blaming it on an issue with MY flooring. Apparently it needs to be screeded to level it out as any bump in the floor will result in wonky boards. The joiner is being supervised by the boss and is suddenly very polite and courteous.

Well done!!

Who cares what excuse they serve up so long as they do the work properly. So pleased to hear your update. Hope it goes smoothly now.

billy1966 · 28/03/2022 11:21

Keep taking lots of photos.

Make it very clear that you will not accept a shit job.

Talk to your bank and credit card company.

Do not pay a penny more to them until it is perfect.

That standard of work is shocking.

billy1966 · 28/03/2022 11:23

If there was a problem with the floor, it wS THEIR job to tell you.

Do not accept that bullshit.

They are cowboys if they lay a floor badly on a surface that isn't right and then blame the customer.

Cowboys do this.

Don't accept it.

billyt · 28/03/2022 11:28

Sorry, Coffeekam. He is no joiner.

I could do better than that and I am just a DIY-er

If the floor level had been a problem that should have been stated before.

As Billy1966 said, he is a cowboy.

Coffeekam · 28/03/2022 11:42

Apparently the shop have said he is the best joiner they have. Never had any complaints about his work. His attitude on the other hand they said he is the type of person who should only work in an empty house.
