To say that job titles shouldn't include the word 'architect' unless they are actually an architect?

Hi all, so my partner is an architect, It takes years to become an architect and you have to be registered on the RIBA (royal institute of British architects) to call yourself an architect.

I have noticed an increasing number of jobs using the job title 'architect' that has nothing to do with architecture.. for example, "solution Architect" which is 'responsible for evaluating an organisations business needs and determining how IT can support those needs leveraging software" so .. not an architect.

Other job titles are "software architect", "senior enterprise solution architect manufacturing", "web solutions architect", "HR solutions architect", "finance and accounting digital architect", "analytics implementation architect", "deputy food architect", "platform architect" ... the list goes on

Isn't Architect a protected title? IMO job titles should actually mean something, and all of the above mean absolutely nothing?

Ted Moseby, sex architect.

Franca123 · 25/03/2022 12:46

YABU. The job titles stated in your OP describe well what it is these people deliver. Plus, it's clear that they are not an architect architect. IT Architects will similarly have trained and practiced for years and have a deep knowledge set. No idea why you would get funny about this at all.

Flatandhappy · 25/03/2022 12:46

Different industry sectors use different job titles, do you really not understand that?

Zilla1 · 25/03/2022 12:47

I had to Google to avoid having to do something I must but really don't want to do.

BrioNotBiro · 25/03/2022 12:48

Why are you getting pissed off about a title that's not even yours?

SockFluffInTheBath · 25/03/2022 12:52

@drpet49

Same as Engineer. No, the man from Currys who comes to fix your washing machine isn’t an Engineer
I remember in the first year of uni there was a recruitment chap came out from the IMechE and ranted at us for an hour that mechanics and technicians are not engineers, and we should take back the job title of engineer Grin
BritWifeInUSA · 25/03/2022 12:53

It takes years to study and qualify for those positions as well.

You sound very immature and precious. I know someone who is a travel agent whose email signature says “experience architect”. Wanky? Probably. Deceiving? Nope. It’s just descriptive language. Like the way restaurants describe simple things such as mash. I remember in the 1990s the trend to label everything that was brown as “chocolate”. So the Next site was full of “chocolate trousers”, “chocolate cushions”, “chocolate curtains”.

SmellyWellyWoo · 25/03/2022 12:53

If you look up dictionary definition of the word, those titles are correct.

It's also odd that you seem to take such pride in your partner's training and expertise yet you don't actually do the job yourself. Very strange when people brag about their partner/spouse's job as though it's their achievement.

itssunnyyay · 25/03/2022 12:54

@MakeABaer

So, what's your job OP?

We understand that your partner is a very important architect and tat you are googling architecture jobs, what is it that you do professionally?

I included the detail about him being an architect for context purposes and yes I had a little look on google at architecture jobs because he was talking about looking for a new job, is that okay? Or does that for some reason mean that I think my DP is God himself? Lmao. I am a dietitian

Sigh. I wasn't bragging, I included it for context.. next time I won't because everyone seems to think it is bragging. I could have just lied and said I was the architect but I'm not a liar

I'll let you know when I hear back about my complaint to Rug Doctor.
Thank you for that one!
Wheniruletheworld · 25/03/2022 12:56

@ClariceQuiff

I often see 'Scrum Master' vacancies but it has nothing to do with rugby. It's a project management role.
I read that as scum master, which sent my imagination in a number of directions!!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/03/2022 13:02

Ha ha! I just came in to say that I spent years thinking my friend’s husband was an architect, when he’s a software architect Grin He must have thought i was crazy!

justasoul · 25/03/2022 13:03

It’s mildly annoying when looking for a job in architecture (of buildings) but nothing to lose sleep over. More irritating is the board’s preciousness over a title when anyone can go around doing an architect’s job badly if only they call themselves something else.

Whatalovelydaffodil · 25/03/2022 13:10

@jeaux90

How would you describe someone who designs technology and data centres then for example? Including all the physical requirements, servers, software, cabling, build guides etc?

Because that is the job of a Solution Architect.

Designer?
daimbarsatemydogsbone · 25/03/2022 13:13

Chocolate kettle, chocolate fireguard

Onlyrainbows · 25/03/2022 13:15

I work with solutions architects and they definitely deserve that title

doadeer · 25/03/2022 13:16

What a weird post. So disparaging about a profession you know nothing about.

Being an IT solution architect doesn't mean designing in the way you think - that would be a UX Designer.

I don't see how it remotely impacts your husband in any way. If he tells people he is an architect everyone knows what that is and that it takes a lot of years to study.

It also takes a lot of study to become a great solution or data architect.

Stop being a snob

sweepeep · 25/03/2022 13:21

Obviously the use of the word architect is meant to mean designer, I can only think that they use architect because it sounds more fancy, but why don't interior designers call themselves interior architects then?

Because an interior architect is a completely different job to an interior designer.

My dh is a naval architect...

Doctor on its own isn't a protected title though

You seem to believe that becoming an architect in IT doesn't require significant amounts of education, training and experience. It does.

Down off your high horse now.

Queenoftheflumps02 · 25/03/2022 13:31

Years ago, I worked for a very large software house and Solution Architect was just becoming a term used in IT. The company ran a job advert in The Sunday Times for Solution Architects and received a letter from RIBA threatening legal action if the term was used in this way again.

Legal advice was duly sought and came back, that because the role was described as Solutions Architect it was legally acceptable and that "architect" was only protected if used in isolation.
