Asda and being treated like a shoplifter!

AIBU to think it's off for Asda to come and age verify me for a bottle of Baileys but not remove the tag until I've actually paid, meaning you have to then wait for someone to come over again for a second time). I was checking out around £200 of stuff, some of those gifts including an afternoon tea voucher worth £34. Surely if they think I'm going to shoplift, it wouldn't be the bottle of Baileys! Have never shoplifted in my life, was smartly dressed (not that that should matter) and didn't even have a handbag with me. I just thought the attitude of two of the staff was 'off' in their manner (" oh no, we won't remove that until you've paid!").

FWIW, I'm not going to overthink this, just wanted to do a quick AIBU!!

Forgot to add, this was a self serve checkout

It's nothing to do with shoplifting. If they take it off the scale before you've paid it won't let you keep scanning until it's put back, so delays you anyway.

I always scan alcohol last for this reason Wink

Doodledoop · 25/03/2022 03:29

Hmm i'd just assume its protocol that they only de-tag once you"ve paid and nothing about you personally. But you said something about their 'manner', did you ask them to de-tag it and they refused so you felt not trusted?

I can see circumstances where staff might have done it 'seeing as I'm here anyway' would save them another trip over. It was obviously already scanned to cause the over 21 warning so you couldn't have shoplifted it anyway.

So actually not about shoplifting just inefficient.

Notimeforaname · 25/03/2022 03:30

As above. Its not you, it's the system they have.

FlowerArranger · 25/03/2022 03:32

This is standard procedure, not just at Asda!
Staff have zero leeway.

NumberTheory · 25/03/2022 03:33

I think you’re expecting a bit too much in terms of adaption from a place like Asia. While the tags are obviously to stop shoplifting, I think the process that inconvenienced you is just to make sure all the staff know how to deal with the tags with confidence.

SirenSays · 25/03/2022 03:59

Last time this happened to me they left a tag on one of the bottles I bought and I didn't realise until I'd gotten home. Had to saw the stupid thing off.

Lhddujvf · 25/03/2022 04:08

I think what annoyed me was I scanned a bottle of prosecco, so she age verified me, while she was there, I asked if she could remove the tag from the Baileys I was about to scan next. But I was met with refusal! I did end up saying.. look I'm not going to shoplift your bottle of Baileys!! Shock Now feel daft if they don't remove the tag for to the scales or something!!! Confused

You weren't treated like a shoplifter. You weren't targeted - they just didn't make an exception to their protocol for you.

I work in a supermarket, I've worked there ten years, I know and get on well with all of my colleagues - I wouldn't expect them to remove the tag before payment even for me! That would defeat the point of the security tag. Yes, you know you weren't gonna nick it, but if you had done and they had taken the tag off early they could be in a lot of trouble, and you'd be surprised how many shoplifters fit your profile - smartly dressed, doing a big shop (sometimes paying for some of it, but not all). It's impossible to tell who is and isn't a shoplifter and that's why the same procedures have to be applied to everybody. It's not personal.

RustyShackleford3 · 25/03/2022 05:26

I did end up saying.. look I'm not going to shoplift your bottle of Baileys

I don't think shoplifting risk assessments are based on the honour system. You telling them you aren't going to steal from them isn't enough for them to relax their security procedures. Surely you can understand this?

Angelbaby1985 · 25/03/2022 05:30

You also say you asked them to remove the tag before you scanned it

MsChatterbox · 25/03/2022 05:33

Yes YABU. You weren't treated like a shop lifter.

Turningpurple · 25/03/2022 05:43

So you wanted her to remove the tag, before you scanned it. And then when it goes on the scales it won't recognise it because the tag is missing.

And you are annoyed she did her job rather than going out of her way to do things the wrong way round. Incase it made you feel bad?

Somuddled · 25/03/2022 05:47

I can never get my head round these sorts of posts. Genuinely interested in understanding why somw people take such offence to basic security measures in shops. Oh and they always mention what they were wearing! Security and other staff don't know you or give a fuck about you. They just want to do thier job, follow procedures, not risk thier own jobs and go home. Stop taking it personally.

OldTinHat · 25/03/2022 05:49

YABU. Perfectly standard practice. Have you not used a self service check out before?

Onlyforcake · 25/03/2022 05:57

Pretty sure shoplifters don't get treated like that, you asked for a tag to be removed before you'd put it on your shopping total, they told you the process. Do you get annoyed at having to take off all your metal at airports? Or do you object to being treated like a potential hijacker?

KatherineJaneway · 25/03/2022 06:01

Have never shoplifted in my life, was smartly dressed

Plenty of smartly dressed people shoplift. They have a process they have to follow hence not removing the tag until after payment.

WomanStanleyWoman · 25/03/2022 06:01

But I was met with refusal!

This is a rather dramatic way of putting it. It’s just standard procedure.

Hesma · 25/03/2022 06:02

It’s their process and the same for everyone, get a life

Carrotten · 25/03/2022 06:04

If you've got 200 quid of shopping including alcohol just go through the normal checkouts!

Butchyrestingface · 25/03/2022 06:05

I did end up saying.. look I'm not going to shoplift your bottle of Baileys

Paranoid, much?

mogsrus · 25/03/2022 06:13

Afternoon tea voucher, why was that item relevant to the rest of the ridiculous post

eldora · 25/03/2022 06:16

Why do you think she should take your word that you won’t steal?

Why is her losing her job for not following process more palatable to you than you having to wait another minute or two?

You are so ridiculously entitled.

Turningpurple · 25/03/2022 06:16

I firmly believe some twitter beardies have accounts here just so they can post shit like 'I can be a shoplifter as I wore boden' so they can attempt to prove how ridiculous MN is when people agree with them.

Not saying op is one of these, but I am sure it happens.

eldora · 25/03/2022 06:17

@mogsrus

Afternoon tea voucher, why was that item relevant to the rest of the ridiculous post
I think it’s meant to add to the ‘but I’m a LADY’ picture she’s cultivating.
