Asda and being treated like a shoplifter!

Lhddujvf · 25/03/2022 03:10

AIBU to think it's off for Asda to come and age verify me for a bottle of Baileys but not remove the tag until I've actually paid, meaning you have to then wait for someone to come over again for a second time). I was checking out around £200 of stuff, some of those gifts including an afternoon tea voucher worth £34. Surely if they think I'm going to shoplift, it wouldn't be the bottle of Baileys! Have never shoplifted in my life, was smartly dressed (not that that should matter) and didn't even have a handbag with me. I just thought the attitude of two of the staff was 'off' in their manner (" oh no, we won't remove that until you've paid!").

FWIW, I'm not going to overthink this, just wanted to do a quick AIBU!!

@KatherineJaneway

Have never shoplifted in my life, was smartly dressed

Plenty of smartly dressed people shoplift. They have a process they have to follow hence not removing the tag until after payment.

Yep I was walking out of Tesco last week and security caught a smartly dressed man in a suit who had 20+ packs of Tesco Finest Smoked Salmon in his laptop bag.

He was so incensed at being caught, it was unreal. The entitlement is strong in many.

wdtaBruno · 25/03/2022 06:20

How were they to know you wasn't going to steal it?

Scan the tagged item last then it won't be a problem.

MegaClutterSlut · 25/03/2022 06:25

I work in a supermarket and the rules are that I'm not allowed to take the tag off until you've paid. No one was accusing you of anything, they were just following said rules

I'd be rubbish at security because most of the people that caught stealing, look nothing like your stereotypical thief

dementedpixie · 25/03/2022 06:26

You scan and pay before tags are removed

Allelbowsandtoes · 25/03/2022 06:28

Get over yourself, OP Grin

R00K · 25/03/2022 06:29

You only have to be seen to be shopping "suspiciously" to be banned from asda these days.

gamerchick · 25/03/2022 06:32

The tills don't summon a human for age verification until to go to pay anyway. Or they do where I am. Much better than having to wait to start scanning again. That should be universal in in all asdas.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 25/03/2022 06:37

Are you new to shopping?

I thought from the title you were going to be the man I read about yeterday who was banned from Asda because thet didn't like the way he shopped

Then you might have had a point

FitAt50 · 25/03/2022 06:39

You should have demanded to speak to the manager 'Karen'. 😉

Somanysocks · 25/03/2022 06:40

Well that's odd as I scanned a bottle, staff came and verified but then took it away to de tag it which meant I had to wait for her to come back with it, all the while being told ( by the computer voice) to 'please replace the item', so procedures do differ.

JillFromHolt · 25/03/2022 06:41

As others have said its normal procedure but also if you'd changed your mind and left it on the side (as lots of people dump their unwanted items in random places) that potentially means someone else could steal it. I used to work in a supermarket and you would be surprised at the range of people I've seen trying to steal things, especially on the self scan. Enjoy your booze Smile

LabelMaker · 25/03/2022 06:43

It's in case you change your mind or mess up the scales. Or yeah maybe you looked really shifty. Don't take things so personally.

Turningpurple · 25/03/2022 06:43

No some people choose to ignore the process. They then override the 'missing item' notification.

The fact that some staff do it the wrong way round for speed, doesn't mean procedure varies.

I used to work at Asda Head office. Looking at self serve processes and policy. On self serve tills they should only de tag once its been paid for.

girlmom21 · 25/03/2022 06:44

If you're that upset just use a normal checkout next time.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 25/03/2022 06:48

Tesco do this too. I asked why as I'm 40+ and was told that a lot of not so honest people used to have the tag removed then leave with the bottle knowing the card they used would be declined. Staff are not allowed to challenge shoplifters for safety reasons so this just prevents it happening.

It's nothing against you being profiled as a shoplifter. It's one of the cons of self service tills. Sainsburys self service have a camera and screen over every till now.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 25/03/2022 06:48

Why the dramatics? It's standard practice anyway.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 25/03/2022 06:53

@FitAt50

How do you know the manager was called Karen?
LetHimHaveIt · 25/03/2022 06:59

I'd assume you were trying to steal it, as I can't imagine anyone paying for Baileys. It's filth.

Incidentally, commenting tartly to an assistant that you're not going to shoplift it - wouldn't subsequently prevent you from shoplifting it. I imagine terrorists don't often check the 'I am a terrorist' box on visa applications.

Lhddujvf · 25/03/2022 07:03

@OldTinHat

YABU. Perfectly standard practice. Have you not used a self service check out before?
Shock Haha!!! These comments are what makes me love Mumsnet!!

Daisycrown · 25/03/2022 07:07

Thought you were coming on to say you'd been profiled in a shop (now that's annoying). 🙄

Lhddujvf · 25/03/2022 07:07

@mogsrus

Afternoon tea voucher, why was that item relevant to the rest of the ridiculous post
It's relevant because if people are going to shoplift, surely, this was more than double the amount and would be easy to steal!!!

BlancheB · 25/03/2022 07:09

That ship has already sailed! It's standard procedure to remove alcohol tags after you have paid for your shopping.

It doesn't matter if you're buying vouchers for afternoon tea or baked beans nor whether you've brought your handbag Confused

YABU

Jumpjumpjumper · 25/03/2022 07:10

The voucher would surely have to be validated by being scanned and paid for. So you wouldnt have been able to steal it anyway?

MacaroniBaloney · 25/03/2022 07:13

@Carrotten

If you've got 200 quid of shopping including alcohol just go through the normal checkouts!
That's what I thought! Self scanning £200 of items including tagged items would have sent me over the edge!!!
ILoveYou3000 · 25/03/2022 07:13

It's relevant because if people are going to shoplift, surely, this was more than double the amount and would be easy to steal!!!

Erm, no. You have to actually scan the vouchers for them to become active. Otherwise everyone would be stealing them and they'd cost the company too much money, so would be kept secured.

Why do you feel you're above company policy?

The best shoplifters, the ones who are hardest to catch, are the ones who 'blend', smartly dressed, doing a full shop, looking like every other customer, they don't stand out.
