Phrases that annoy you

Mine are:
“We are pregnant” when only one of the couple is physically pregnant
and
“It is what it is”

Going forward
Living my best life
Being my authentic self
Trapped in the wrong body

I hate “She / he doesn’t suffer fools gladly”. This means that they feel entitled to be horrible to others but are quite upset when people are horrible back.

Similarly “He’s just throwing his toys out the pram” - he is unhappy with something you have done but you are going to dismiss it.

Both of the above I’ve only heard at work.

I hate it when men say “She looks after herself / takes care of herself” - they are praising her for still being attractive over age 30 or whatever and think this is non-creepy.

I once met up with an old boyfriend who said (about his cousin’s new partner’s daughter) “She’s going to break a few hearts”. Shudder. So he’s checking out whether this child / teenager is likely to be hot in a few years time. Rank.

@futuremoneyinbank

I always assumed 'powder my nose' was someone hinting strongly they were off to do a line of coke Grin. If it annoys you, maybe you can laugh inwardly thinking that they've just announced their drug habit to the world.
That gives the phrase Ladies’ Powder Room a rather different meaning.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/03/2022 15:53

This phrase doesn't so much annoy me as make me feel old and out of touch. Just passed a shop with a sign saying it's a 'Vintage Clothes Pop-up'. We used to call that a second-hand clothes shop. The fact that it's not got a proper lease is of no interest to me.

Fur baby Angry
Tesco have birthday cards for “fur babies”. 😫😫😫
Featuredcreature · 22/03/2022 16:26

Pooh is worse than poop, but both are awful, thankfully seems to have died out.
I think an ex of mine said quite a lot of these phrases, the "going round to the folks" and "a bite to eat" we're the most egregious. He often used "a tad..." whatever too, wish I had kept the text conversations Grin

ClenchYourButtocks · 22/03/2022 16:29

'Being comfortable in my own skin' makes me shudder.

ka147 · 22/03/2022 16:34

Can we normalise.....

balalake · 22/03/2022 16:38

Literally.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/03/2022 17:00

Amazing and awesome.

LadyEloise1 · 22/03/2022 17:45

"On"my period.

Never heard it before reading it on Mumsnet.

I live in Ireland.

Yes, that’s a funny one. I would either say, ‘I’ve got my period’ or ‘I’ve come on’.

Covit (MIL seems incapable of realising its coviD)!

Ilovethecinema · 22/03/2022 19:31

Your overthinking it / this. Said by any man I have ever dared to disagree with.

ginghamstarfish · 22/03/2022 19:53

Anyone talking about how they 'sourced' something really enrages me. No, you BOUGHT it, you didn't charter an expedition up the Zambezi. Same with 'literally' - no you didn't literally die of shock - that would mean you died. People should look up the meaning of words before using them.

HoollyWugger · 22/03/2022 19:56

On quiz shows - "That's a GREAT answer!!!" No, it's the one and only RIGHT answer Angry

How did you get to this particular definition of not suffering fools gladly? Of course it doesn't mean one can be horrid yet not allow others to be. It means that some don't like/tolerate those who are daft/obtuse/unwilling to read a room.

In fact, you have misunderstood both the phrases you have quoted either because you don't know what they mean, or you are being deliberately obtuse. The latter will really get on the tits of those who don't suffer fools gladly...

Yes. See also: I researched it. No, you didn't. You googled something, or checked Wikipedia.

Waiting on rather than waiting for. Unless you are asking a waiter/ress if they are serving you
Excited for (I'm excited for Christmas). Well I'm sure Christmas is chuffed that you are excited on their behalf, but most of us are excited about 'x'
Big of a deal... it's big a deal. These extraneous ofs are coming from the USA.
