To feel a bit "off" about the retailer posting this meme?

It's from a well known clothing shop. I have no idea if I'm allowed to put the name.

They shared this on their Facebook page and captioned it with the first line in the picture. There's something about it that I don't like. Red flags shouldn't be ignored just because of how someone looks or how tall they are. It's almost as if they are making light of abusive traits in a partner.

AIBU to think it's irresponsible and in bad taste for a reputable company to be posting something like this?

Fully willing to be told that I'm being too uptight or overthinking it too much and need to wind my neck in!

This too popped up on my facebook last night.
I read it as she cant see the red flags as he is so tall so there starting to look pink as so far away, and then I moved on with my life.

Theres plenty more things in life to get wound up over.

RedRobin100 · 21/03/2022 05:19

I’ll add - I guess I’d be more put off that is insulting implying women are shallow - not so much about the ignoring abuse interpretation

Pandypuff · 21/03/2022 05:26

God forbid anyone makes a joke these days.

EishetChayil · 21/03/2022 05:32

Height does have an impact on what a guy is like. The short men I've dated have all had major napoleon complexes due to their height. Which of course is due to how short men are perceived. So it's a vicious cycle.

DoobryWhatsit · 21/03/2022 06:22

I mean, yeah it's ridiculous. That's why it's funny, that's how jokes work.... 🤷‍♀️

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/03/2022 06:22

@EishetChayil
Really? I dated a guy in college who was kind, funny, genuine, an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist and composer...and 5"4 (which I am also). It is true that most girls didn't look twice at him. I don't think it made him bitter or gave him a napoleon complex, he wasn't like that at all. His main flaw was getting too obsessive over work and other projects and worked up over things were ultimately self-imposed (autistic traits I think). He did end up marrying a woman shorter than him.

Halllyup17 · 21/03/2022 06:49

I don't get it.

NightmareLoon · 21/03/2022 07:01

I watched Love is Blind when I had Covid, and I'm sure one of the contestants says something like "I don't care if he's horrible, if he's over 6 feet we're good to go.". (Shaina is always shown making that face, BTW.)

OneTC · 21/03/2022 07:17

I assumed that she wasn't overlooking the red flags just that they're so far away

It's a stupid joke but i don't think it's that deep

Nothappyatwork · 21/03/2022 07:20

@Pandypuff

God forbid anyone makes a joke these days.
And normalises overlooking red flags ? It’s taken us years to get to the point where women actually see red flags for what they are at all and now we’re being told that there’s so many ways you could read that 🙄 its fucking crystal clear. And not funny
Gumbomambo · 21/03/2022 07:31

If it is a joke it’s pretty bad taste. It isn’t a great ad if it’s not clear in intent, it may have got people talking but we aren’t talking about the clothes or the brand. No it makes me wonder if they approve of jokes that people see as abusive towards women.

nomistake · 21/03/2022 07:34

I can't imagine going through life and taking every joke and meme so seriously. It's a piss take. Yes, some people are hot and because of that are forgiven for other behaviours. It may not be right but its taking the piss of what occurs in real life.

Walkingalot · 21/03/2022 07:35

They are just picking up on a popular dating trend that women prefer taller men. There are tons of posts on here that support that theory. We all have our boxes to tick.
I think it's light hearted and there's no worrying message being given. If anything, it's pointing out the ridiculousness of it really.
What that has to do with selling clothes though is anyone's guess.

Lampan · 21/03/2022 07:45

What @ShinyBeans said. It makes more sense knowing who the picture is of. OK nobody should be ignoring red flags but it’s what happens in the show a lot

Cakesnbiscuit · 21/03/2022 07:49

I found this funny, but I have also watched the show and know she was crazy!

HailAdrian · 21/03/2022 07:54

That meme is not suggesting that red flags be ignored. We do often overlook red flags because we are physically attracted to someone. If anything, I'm glad that young people are aware of 'red flags.'

Onlywomengivebirth · 21/03/2022 08:04

It’s really off. Are they getting flak on their page?

SartresSoul · 21/03/2022 08:04

It’s because lots of women only date men over 6 foot, this is well known and lots even add to their online dating profiles ‘only message if you’re over 6 ft’. So the meme is basically saying a guy has red flags but he’s over 6 ft so let’s ignore them. Stupid meme, stupid of a big company like new look to post it.

Papayamya · 21/03/2022 08:12

I agree it's not funny, a lot of the time this is passed over as being lighthearted and a bit of a laugh, but I don't think it is. Joking about red flags isn't funny, perhaps if they inserted when he likes x but I'll overlook because of y trait then maybe. I know the balance isn't the same but imagine if a man's clothing company posted when she has red flags but she's (insert physical trait she can't control).

nauticant · 21/03/2022 08:13

I was surprised by the name mytherapistsays. What kind of therapist would choose that as a name? Or is it some kind of edgy joke?

AllOfUsAreDead · 21/03/2022 08:16

Pretty much. I posted on the last height-based thread in Relationships to talk about a truly lovely ex of mine who happened to be 5'7", and said that height was no indication of how good a man someone is.

I was rounded on and told that didn't matter, they would never consider someone like my ex and wanted someone at least XXX height.

So for at least some women, it seems height IS more important than bastard-rating.

Dear lord really?! And some women wonder why they can't have a good relationship... Wow.

Papayamya · 21/03/2022 08:18

Apparently it's an Instagram account that shares "humorous" mental health related memes.
JingsMahBucket · 21/03/2022 08:18

@TomAllenWife
Whenever I read a thread like this I think fuck I need to leave MN

SAME. I get where the discomfort is coming from but seriously y'all...

RashofBees · 21/03/2022 08:20

I didn’t even get the ‘joke’ until I read this thread - thought she was squinting because 6ft was tall and therefore it was literally hard to see. I suppose the real interpretation is mildly more amusing than that.

I don’t think the meme itself is taboo, but it’s a very strange thing for a mainstream retailer to post. That’s before you get to the really odd ‘red flags are turning pink’ thing with hearts.

Federal · 21/03/2022 08:44

NewLook is probably for the Love Island level of intelligence, though isnt it?

Seriously @Londoncallingtothefarawaytowns?
And I suppose Coast is for the sanctimonious snobs misguided by their own low levels of intelligence?!
