To feel a bit "off" about the retailer posting this meme?

It's from a well known clothing shop. I have no idea if I'm allowed to put the name.

They shared this on their Facebook page and captioned it with the first line in the picture. There's something about it that I don't like. Red flags shouldn't be ignored just because of how someone looks or how tall they are. It's almost as if they are making light of abusive traits in a partner.

AIBU to think it's irresponsible and in bad taste for a reputable company to be posting something like this?

Fully willing to be told that I'm being too uptight or overthinking it too much and need to wind my neck in!

I don't think that's ok at all. I can imagine some people sharing on a personal account (sadly) but I certainly wouldn't want my company associated with it. Not good.

DuckyNoMates · 20/03/2022 19:34

It's completely the wrong message. How does being over 6ft mean a woman is going to be so distracted by it they won't also notice he's a dick.

DuckyNoMates · 20/03/2022 19:35

It's incredibly insulting. Most women I know aren't that shallow.

Momijin · 20/03/2022 19:38

That's horrible.

Barkingmadhouse · 20/03/2022 19:45

You are being sensitive. Look through the comments on the Facebook page and 99% are in agreement with / laughing at the meme

NoSquirrels · 20/03/2022 19:48

@GlazedDoughnuts

It's the way they've written "red flags starting to turn pink" that's making me feel "off' about it I think.
It’s shit comms from a brand on such so media because it’s totally meaningless.

Did they give the junior the keys to the account?

Weird.

SockFluffInTheBath · 20/03/2022 19:53

I read as he was too tall for her to see the red flags, not that his height made them something to be tolerated. My first thought was actually that maybe if her face wasn’t so full of filler she might be able to open her eyes and see the damned flags

EmpressCixi · 20/03/2022 19:56

I read it as she is short and so can’t see the red flags as he is too tall.
But I can see how it can be read different ways.

CaMePlaitPas · 20/03/2022 20:01

I'd find this funnier if women weren't being killed by abusive partners. This is wildly inappropriate considering their target audience is teen girls/young women, often those starting out in the dating world.

ShinyBeans · 20/03/2022 20:05

I thought it was a joke about Shaina (the woman in the meme) and all of the red flags that the contestants ignored in the most recent series of Love Is Blind.

Niahm · 20/03/2022 20:08

I think they’re just trying to relate to women in their 20’s. I’m mid twenties and some variation if this pops up on my facebook newsfeed pretty much daily.

It’s a toxic idea but (hopefully!) nobody actually takes it seriously. It’s reminds me of when a good looking convict was on the run a few weeks ago. GMP shared it on social media and all the comments were along the lines of ‘he can hide out in my bed anytime’. Not a good signal to be sending to the younger generation but it’s seen as the norm now.

tkwal · 20/03/2022 20:09

I don't see how that is supposed to sell clothes. Very mixed messaging and insulting to women as if they are that shallow

TyrannosaurusRegina · 20/03/2022 20:26

Come on, I don't think they are seriously suggesting to ignore red flags because of someone's height.

I really had to sit and look and look and think about what you were trying to find offence about but couldn't, I had to go to the comments to get an inkling.

extractorfactor · 20/03/2022 22:46

Maybe they are about to launch into mens wear, with trousers, shirts, jackets etc all printed with little red and pink flags?
I think they are trying to jump on the domestic violence bandwagon, but have missed the footplate. Just recently I've seen numerous adverts regarding domestic violence but tbh it feels like nothing more than tokenism (hence my bandwagon comment)
Domestic violence and sexual violence need to be taken much more seriously and that starts with judges passing tougher sentences on perpetrators. It starts by making pornography illegal. It starts by ensuring women have safe spaces, it starts by not trampling on women's rights. It starts by routing out the misogyny that's so rife in government organisations, it starts by women being taken seriously when they have been brave enough to inform the police they have been a DV victim. It starts when stalkers are properly punished. It doesn't bloody start with red to pink flags which too many will be confusing and making a mockery of a very serious and often insidious crime.

extractorfactor · 20/03/2022 22:48

To many not too many. Too many to's that's my problem.

OnTheBoardwalk · 20/03/2022 22:52

I'm struggling to figure out what the message is, what’s it to do with height and red flags

I’m totally struggling to understand what this has to do with a clothes shop and why on earth they would do such an advert. Poor taste I think

Lillyhatesjaz · 20/03/2022 23:01

As there is confusion about what the joke was supposed to be it obviously isn't a very good meme

BoredZelda · 20/03/2022 23:12

Where are all these short men who are undateable? I spent ages to find them but despite my short arse, I ended up marrying a very tall person.

Are tall men really considered a catch?

Ohyesiam · 20/03/2022 23:24

@tootiredtobother

Waaat ! is that ad saying, as hes over 6Ft. he is a keeper despite any red flags you see
It really isn’t. It’s saying that if you are sexually attracted to someone it can cloud your judgement about their actions/ behaviour/ personality traits.

It is a shit way you sell clothes though.

surreygirl1987 · 20/03/2022 23:24

I don't really get the point of the meme. It's a bit rubbish to be honest.

Iwannabewherethepeopleare · 21/03/2022 04:20

I sent that to my friend today because she does this every time, and she knows it!

FlissyPaps · 21/03/2022 04:42

A lot of brands post memes like this (by hoping their target audience like/comment/share) to generate more traffic to their page - leading to viewing their sites, and then making a purchase. Purely a marketing technique.

The message of the meme is in bad taste IMO. We can all joke about ignoring men’s “red flags” if they have something desirable (height, money, looks etc).
But in reality, we need watch out for the “red flags” in order to avoid incompatible relationships, drama, abuse, violence etc.

Agreed. Whatever the meme means its shit and unclear communication. And shit and unclear communication has contributed to violence against women, to misogyny. Am so so tired of the misogyny that is spread via social media and passed as jokes or not meant to be serious. That is how misogyny (and many other evils) is sanctioned and reproduced. Those "joke" shape minds, create excuses etc. It's worse when those posting such rubbish are called out these days and 'apologise ' and call it a learning. And all is supposed to be forgiven
DropYourSword · 21/03/2022 05:01

@steff13

I read it as she is trying to see the red flags but because he is tall she is ignoring them.
I read it as she's trying to see his red flags but can't because they're too high to see properly if he's tall and she's short, hence the squinting.
RedRobin100 · 21/03/2022 05:06

Hmm no, I wouldn’t get worked up about this. It doesn’t actually say or imply as much as you’re inferring OP.
“Red flags” could be as innocuous as bad timekeeping or messiness.
I think you’re over reacting a bit
