Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

Have you asked?
They swap out the chicken in a sweet chilli chicken wrap for veggie gougons so I don't see why they wouldn't swap the meet patties for vegan patties in a big mac.

DysmalRadius · 14/03/2022 18:42

Personally, I eat at McDonalds because we need somewhere convenient that can cater to a variety of allergies, plus a five-year-old with coeliac disease and a vegetarian. When we're out and about and need to eat on the road, relatively quickly and cheaply, McDonalds is one of the easiest places to find that meets the needs of our entire party without anyone feeling hard done-by.

Whatwasthat2 · 14/03/2022 18:42

On the other side of it. I'm not vegetarian but I am lactose intolerant. I normally have to go for the vegan options because of this, but I want to eat meat...

zoeFromCity · 14/03/2022 18:44

I thought I am an omnivore. I found I'm not, as I don't like/stomach artificial food which is pretending to be the original one. So no Quorn, no veggie meat for me, and no soya.

Decreasing basic vegetarian choices are really annoying, as it push me towards meat based options, while I'd be happy with food bases on vegetables, legumes, eggs, cheese, or just several bits of meat instead od steak.
I suppose the fancy word is reductionist and appart of wanting more diverse food, I can claim climate as my motivation :)

sheiselectric · 14/03/2022 18:45

100% agree. Dominos won't let me order a plant based meat pizza with real, non vegan cheese. Burger King won't let me order a coke with my plant based burger meal as it is not vegan society approved so I have to pay extra as it's not included in a vegan meal 😑

takealettermsjones · 14/03/2022 18:45

Because there are a lot of dishes with a mix of meat and veggie anyway? All they're doing is removing the meat, rather than attempting a poor substitute.

Often true, but I mean that in making e.g. vegetable samosas they don't use Quorn mince, they just make a vegetable filling.

You have to ask them for a fizzy drink. It is included just doesn't come up on the self service machines.

Yanbu. My chef brother would agree with you but says its because vegans are more vocal

asfuckedascanbe1224 · 14/03/2022 18:49

YANBU at all!!! I feel you SO much!

I don't eat McDonalds but this Vegan default thing seems to be the case I most places now!

I love vegetarian food and vegetarian burgers, and I want mine with normal cheese, but they have all been replaced with a different vegan horrible bread, cheese that isn't cheese and etc.

It annoys me to the core.

You literally just have to ask.
You can change pretty much anything on McDonald’s burgers, more sauce, different sauce, no cheese, extra cheese, lettuce on a burger that doesn’t come with lettuce etc

YANBU. I’m not even vegetarian but I’d quite order a veg meal eg burger kings amazing spicy bean burger. No more 😟

I’m happy to eat more plant based food but I don’t want fake cheese, fake mayo or fake meat (all vile and quorn gives me digestive issues). A nice veggie meal not pretending to be the above and with the ability to choose cheese etc is perfect. It’s bizarrely forcing me to choose more meat based options when I’m eating out. I’m glad I’m not alone

parabalabalabala · 14/03/2022 18:56

@takealettermsjones

I agree, I don't want to eat fake meat, I want to eat vegetable versions of things. Asian cuisines are so much better for this. You can go to a Chinese or Indian restaurant/takeaway and get vegetable versions of pretty much everything.
I stayed away from meat for a month when travelling around India, the food was bloody amazing. So much lovely food made with vegetables, nuts, cheese and delicious spices. Not a piece of fake meat in sight (although I do like seitan, tofu etc)
HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 14/03/2022 18:56

Uuurgh! Vegan "cheese" is bloody disgusting!

I mean I wouldn't eat McD's if you paid me.

But agree with your point in principle.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 14/03/2022 18:58

@AuntyBumBum

Just come over to the dark side. The bacon is lovely Grin
You have already entered the dark side walking through their doors.
MorganKitten · 14/03/2022 18:58

You can do this at the desk, my friend does this every time.

takealettermsjones · 14/03/2022 19:01

@parabalabalabala Absolutely - I have found travelling difficult sometimes re. what I can and can't eat etc, but India was an absolute joy!

AncientofMuMu · 14/03/2022 19:01

Yanbu op, tho sort of thing drives me mad, I avoid gluten because it exacerbates my arthritis and the "free from" food is nearly always free from gluten, eggs, milk etc. I get it cheaper to produce 1 range rather than several but I love cheese and feel like my diet is restricted enough without being forced to eat vegan all the time.

lugeforlife · 14/03/2022 19:02

As a pescatarian of over 35 years my family are sick of me moaning about this. I actively dislike vegan products design to look and taste and have a similar texture to meat. The McPlant has no appeal to me at all because of this - totally fine as a don't really eat there except for the occasional egg McMuffin.

Other chain places (Nando's and Wagamama being the worst two) used to have a good range of options. Now it's all about the fake meat options and I struggle to find stuff. I don't mind vegan stuff at all as long as it isn't trying to be meat.

And I get this is my issue but it's frustrating

TheReddestJohansson · 14/03/2022 19:04

YANBU.

SellFridges · 14/03/2022 19:06

DD is also furious about this. It’s happening all over. She wants the veggie meat replacements but really doesn’t want to swap real cheese for horrid vegan cheese.

Benjispruce5 · 14/03/2022 19:09

Yanbu

jmh740 · 14/03/2022 19:10

I've been veggie for over 30 years since I was a child, veggie options seemed to be improving but then everything is vegan or fake meat, I love cheese and cream and butter and don't want to eat something that's trying to pretend its meat, some many places seem to do burgers now that are to me too 'meaty', im even starting to miss the goats cheese and halloumi options on the veggie menu!

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 14/03/2022 19:12

Clearly some op’s are confused, calling soya ‘fake meat’! Soya is a bean, a pulse, and contains all the essential amino acids that humans require from the protein element of their diet. Not all pulses are this complete. Soya can be eaten in a ‘meat style’ format, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is very nutritious, and in the form of tofu it is very adaptable also. Soya milk for porridge is a decent breakfast, nutritious and healthy. Without a good diet containing pulses, vegetarians can easily become malnourished.

wearingtheT · 14/03/2022 19:12

Also a veggie who dislikes vegan (bland ) food, it's very annoying!

However you can do anything you like to a McDonalds, you just have to do it as a grill order. I buy cheeseburgers without meat, but with lettuce and tomato. (the fuckers charge me for the salad tho)
