For the past two weeks I’ve had a persistent headache which is absolutely relentless. It’s an excruciating sharp shooting pain in one side of my head which just will not go with OTC painkillers and it’s been present non stop all this time. Contacted my GP last week who thought it could be a migraine (no other migraine symptoms, not made better by darkness etc) but the maximum dose of migraine medication doesn’t touch it either. Noticed the pain is getting more intense over time and tried my GP again, who can’t fit me in for another appointment for another week. I’ve barely had headaches before and certainly not a persistent one for this length of time and I’m seriously concerned about the fact it’s getting worse rather than better and is impacting me both mentally and with my work (I’ve barely been able to work since this came on 2 weeks ago).

Spoke to DP this morning as I’m at my wits end and considering contacting 111 for some urgent help/investigation. DP says it’s clearly a migraine and I shouldn’t waste time contacting an emergency number and should wait out my GP appointment. Would appreciate your thoughts, I don’t want to waste anyones time but I really am at my wits end with this pain Sad, surely this isn’t normal?

Ah @Tulipelle just seen that GP has recommended A&E & you are on your way. Very sensible.

Hope all goes well.

ChloeHel · 14/03/2022 17:35

Could possibly be hemicrania continua! They are awful headaches and won’t go away with OTC treatment or migraine treatment. You’d need specific prescribed NSAIDs!

Let’s hope the hospital give you some answers :)

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/03/2022 17:36

Hope you're sorted soon

Allelbowsandtoes · 14/03/2022 17:39

@Tulipelle

The GP has advised I go to A&E for a neurological assessment so I’m heading off there now. Still can’t help but feel I don’t necessarily need A&E but since it was advised I will go along and see what they have to say.
Well done op and hope your partner feels very guilty Hmm sounds like he was being really unsupportive. Hope it's something straightforward and you get it sorted soon
bellabelly · 14/03/2022 17:40

Sounds like you're getting seen, hope you get some answers. I was just going to say to push for a quick referral. I had a horrible headache that came on suddenly and didn't go away. I hhad no history of migraines or headaches. It turned out (after trying to ignore it / treat with nurofen / being fobbed off by GP) to be a bleed on the brain and could have been v serious. Not to worry you but it's def a good idea to get checked over.

FantasticFebruary · 14/03/2022 17:41

I hope you get some answers & relief at A&E!!

Your not-so 'D' P is coming across as a totally uncaring, unsupportive fuckwit frankly! I'd find his attitude a total turn off & something I'd need to seriously think about! Is he really the man you want to be with through the changes in your life & aging. No idea how old you are, but disability, life changing things can happen at any time. The last thing you need is 'your person' not being there for you.

Hope to hear from you later 🌷

cherish123 · 14/03/2022 17:41

It's probably okay but you are always better to get it checked out.

kittensinthekitchen · 14/03/2022 17:43

THE OP HAS SPOKEN TO A GP AND IS GOING TO A & E

twinmum2007 · 14/03/2022 17:45

@Tulipelle

The advice is appreciated, it definitely doesn’t feel like a sinus headache, this is a shooting pain in the top of the right side of my head which feels like an electric shock. Will ring 111
That sounds like neuralgia or a displaced trapped nerve pain. The source of the pain isn't always where the pain is felt. Bodies are wierd at times.

How are you getting there?
HollowTalk · 14/03/2022 17:49

Hope you manage to get some good painkillers today, OP. It sounds awful.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 14/03/2022 17:49

Sounds like a cluster headache to me - they're not known as the suicide headache for nothing. I suffer from them, and your bog standard migraines - neither of which are pleasant.

But saying that, any new significant headaches should be checked out, and if it's getting worse then you need to be scanned and checked out.

PotteringAlong · 14/03/2022 17:50

I hope you’re on the way to some answers Flowers.

user1471508896 · 14/03/2022 17:52

Not unreasonable at all.

A few years ago I had an awful headache which nothing helped include sopadine. I assumed it was a migraine, on day 5 I went to a walk in centre as I couldn't get a GP appointment. They sent me to A&E, I was admitted and diagnosed with meningitis. I was in for 10 days, on tablets for a few weeks after and signed off work automatically for a month.

I played down my symptoms but if I'd left it much longer to seek medical treatment the outcome could have been a lot worse.

You know your body, listen to it

Onlyforcake · 14/03/2022 17:53

I'm glad that you've sought out medical advice on this and pointed out to your partner that the GP was obviously fairly convinced it was important too. In fact tell him that every day for two weeks Wink

Datafan55 · 14/03/2022 18:00

Definitely get it checked out. People access services for SO much less...

(The worst headache I've ever had - for weeks, and agonising - was from a trapped nerve in my neck. I had had it worked on just previous so it wasn't out of the blue - stupid bloke managed to crick it wrong)

Grantanow · 14/03/2022 18:00

You need medical help now.

RockinHorseShit · 14/03/2022 18:03

Glad you are being seen now. I hope they get to the bottom of it & can sort it out quickly for you 🤞

TickyTacky · 14/03/2022 18:10

Well done for going, I hope everything goes well. I hope your DH will see this and reevaluate - I can't believe he's called you dramatic after 2 weeks of debilitating pain. That's cruel. Hope everything goes well Flowers

kittensinthekitchen · 14/03/2022 18:17

@Grantanow

You need medical help now.

Whiskersonkittens21 · 14/03/2022 18:19

Just seen you are off to a&e, best of luck OP! Hope it's nothing too serious for you x

NeedAHoliday2021 · 14/03/2022 18:28

@kittensinthekitchen why the eye roll? The op’s own gp has advised her to go to A&E so they probably know better than you.

Satsumaeater · 14/03/2022 18:30
@kittensinthekitchen why the eye roll? The op’s own gp has advised her to go to A&E so they probably know better than you.
it (the eye roll) was probably more to do with not reading the OP's update that she was off to A&E for neurological tests...

kittensinthekitchen · 14/03/2022 18:34

@NeedAHoliday2021

I rolled my eyes because it's 6 hours later and the OP has updated in that time.
