To think holiday homes could be used to house lots of refugees

Uk has a LOT of holiday homes and empty second homes. Surely they could be used to take a lot of Refugees aswell as spare rooms? It could support local economies all year round too rather than just in peak tourism seasons? The crisis is going to escalate rapidly in Ukraine- there are 44 million people in the country and so far it’s about 2 million who have fled and now countries like Moldova and the Poland are starting to struggle so we need to step up.

Aibu? It seems like an obvious solution. Obviously using the empty homes of oligarchs too is a preference.

I read an article about a woman who gave her French holiday home to a refugee family.

@HELLITHURT like anyone on this thread gives a shit about Ukrainian refugees! Most people on this thread have spent the entire time coming up with all the reasons why they can’t take refugees in their precious holiday homes as they would lose too much money. I’d rather a Ukrainian family came to our village any day over an entitled English holiday home owner who couldn’t give a shit about anyone including the people in the village.

But the English home owners won't allow it, so it's a mute point? They have no doubt got dates booked out and income assumed, they won't lose that, they've bought the homes as an investment.

Are you offering your own home?

Awaits reason why PP can't possibly do that!

HELLITHURT · 14/03/2022 19:44

@Cheeseplease1976 I have to say the village/cafe owners were we visited seemed to be pleased to see us.

@Cheeseplease1976

Wakes seems to be benefitting from tourism?

AlternativePerspective · 14/03/2022 19:53

@ Cheeseplease1976 why not start your own thread if you wish to vent your anti English opinions? After all, you’re clearly not interested in Ukrainian refugees moving into your village if you want to preserve the Welsh language. After all, taking away the holiday homes from the English, and replacing the English with Russian speakers isn’t going to promote the welsh language either is it?

Ah but the hatred for English and tourists trumps that! 🙄
Cheeseplease1976 · 14/03/2022 20:06

But it is relevant to this thread because this thread is dripping with the kind of entitlement that we see all the time in our Welsh communities. The entitlement that means our language and communities are being destroyed.

I’d welcome Ukrainian refugees into those homes as I am sure they would make more of an effort to integrate than any second home owner who comes for 2 weeks of the year but doesn’t give a shit that locals are living in caravans and now have no local school thanks to second home owners.

But you also hate tourists?? Nothing worse you said, so are the second home owners that only use the village two weeks a year worse than the ones who rent the holiday cottages out?

What industry would the villages have without tourism?

Cheeseplease1976 · 14/03/2022 20:15

@HELLITHURT the idea that Welsh communities can’t survive without our English masters and their holiday homes is utter utter horseshit. We’d do fine thanks.

@Cheeseplease1976 just out of genuine interest - what jobs would be available if there was no tourism? It's an extra income for wales and without it wouldn't there be a lot of pressure on the economy? I thought a lot of young people were leaving wales due to lack of jobs?

Well depending where you live in Wales some areas are dependent others not so much. What on earth makes you think the English are our masters that's very offensive

Cheeseplease1976 · 14/03/2022 20:29

@HELLITHURT what I hate is being patronised by people who have zero understanding of our language or culture. Tourism is not buying up entire villages so the locals can’t live there anymore. That is cultural genocide. If we have tourism, then it’s on our terms and not dictated to us by people who think they know what’s best for us.

Cheeseplease1976 · 14/03/2022 20:31

@justasking111 I live on the Llyn Peninsula which has been devastated by second home ownership.

HELLITHURT · 14/03/2022 20:32

@Cheeseplease1976 can I ask who sold the properties to the English....

The Welsh?

Not all patriots are they?

But the Welsh sold them it!!!

Do you not think people in most of the UK have the same problems of being priced out the market especially Greater London

Apparently that doesn't count.....
justasking111 · 14/03/2022 20:37

@Cheeseplease1976

And the levels of entitlement by some on this thread are truly something to behold frankly. Nid yw Cymru ar werth.
You're old enough to recall the FWA and Ffred Ffrancis I suspect 😂😂
HelloDulling · 14/03/2022 20:40

The idea that refugees can only come to cities is nonsense.

It’s not that they can only go to cities, they want to go to cities. I had a very long conversation with the founder of Refugees At Home last year, who explained that the refugees they host want to able to access support/healthcare/jobs, meet up with fellow refugees, and eventually access education/find work. All of those things are hard or impossible in a rural setting, or even a small town, if you have no transport of your own.

I'll be sure to avoid it! Hopefully if everyone avoids it, it'll aid your cause?

HelloDulling · 14/03/2022 20:45

Ukrainian families would send their children to schools, where they would learn the Welsh language. Holidays makers who book in for a week here and there, or 2nd homers who arrive the 2nd week of July and stay until the bank holiday weekend, don’t join the community in the same way.

Clarabe1 · 14/03/2022 20:47

@Cheeseplease1976 oh stop it’s embarrassing. I am half welsh and could stick my head up my own arse when I hear this anti English racist shit. The issue with holiday homes is a separate issue. The Cornish are pissed off with it as well. You are allowed to a bit peeved about this but that is no excuse for racism.

Cheeseplease1976 · 14/03/2022 20:48

This is a good example of what i mean. People who aren’t Welsh just don’t understand what is happening and why it’s so important: m.facebook.com/watch/?v=1848732175188194&_rdr
