What exercise do you try and do each week and what benefits do you see from it? Looking to try and get into it a bit more but not sure where to start!

I walk my active, working breed dog for at least 90mins a day, usually strenuous hill walking at least 4 days out of 7.

60 mins of Pilates a few times a week (one class and 1-2 home sessions by myself)

I could do more but never get around to it, that’s laziness on my part tbh.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/03/2022 10:16

I walk 40 mins a day but am looking to add some more high intensity workouts. Did yoga with my son this morning and that felt good too!

Leonberger · 13/03/2022 10:22

I mostly walk, roughly 3-4 miles a day.

I fancy doing some YouTube videos but I always feel stupid because I’m so uncoordinated I can’t keep up or seem to do it right!

flounfer · 13/03/2022 10:30

@Italiandreams yep, I go to Zumba once a wk & DH goes to badminton. We generally see friends separately one night a wk/after works drink & try to have an evening together. Although this thread has motivated me & Im not going to the park with DH & dc (wouldn't want to miss this all the time & generally our weekends are busy anyway) so will do some yoga.

Iamblossom · 13/03/2022 10:30

I used to be a gym bunny and go 4 or 5 times a week.

Since I got dogs, it's easier to combine all our exercise, so I run 3 or 4 times a week with them, 6ish km each time. I do a longer road run on the weekend on my own, and usually swim once or twice a week as well.

I also do yoga as often as I can, usually 3 times a week and arm weights after yoga.

Running keeps me lean, and the high you get is addictive. I absolutely love the feeling of achievement after running and going with my dogs is great fun as they also absolutely love it. So much nicer being outside and nowhere near as boring as the gym.

Yoga is a great antidote to the impact of running on my body and again makes me feel amazing afterwards.

And swimming is something I have done all my life, I find it therapeutic and relaxing, and I am a different kind of weary afterwards, also low impact to give my ankles and back a rest. I swim a mile every time I go.

I do most of my exercise in order to keep slim and fit and toned, and the mental health benefits are a bonus. I also love that wile I am doing exercise I cannot be on my phone.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 13/03/2022 10:36

I'm training for a race, so the fear of failure motivates me.

I have a training plan and stick to it religiously.

I work shifts that change every week, so have to fit it all in around work. Which when I'm on 3am starts is tough. I have a nap after work and then feel a bit better.

Night shifts are also a killer to fit it in around.

Husband doesn't do any exercise. But he's happy for me to do what I need to, when I need to.

lugeforlife · 13/03/2022 11:13

@Weepingwillows12 that's me too.

My dh, my kids and even my dm love and are good at sport/physical activity. I am not. My idea of a fast 5k is 40 mins and that was when I was running 4 times a week.

I do see benefits - it has taken time with yoga but I get a sense of calm with it. I love being outside in nature (as long as I don't have to garden obvs).

My family get the endorphin buzz and feel the need to be active. I feel like it's yet another thing to fail at.

I can read a book like a muthafucka though.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/03/2022 11:17

@flounfer

When I actually go to bed at 930 I love it but I find practically & mentally I struggle to do it.

Then I go to bed worrying about getting up at 520 & sleep badly. All a bit mad, I know!!!

Sportslady44 · 13/03/2022 11:59

Lots of sport hence my mumsnet name.

thesnailandthewhale · 13/03/2022 12:40

20,000 steps a day
5 x 1 minute planks a day

Sleep much better, helps keep my weight stable.

itssquidstella · 13/03/2022 12:51

At the moment:

One or two spin classes
One yoga class
One pregnancy HIIT class
One swim

Pre-pregnancy it was more like:
Two spin classes
One yoga class
One HIIT class
One run

itssquidstella · 13/03/2022 12:53

I also walk a reasonable amount - my yearly average is 15,000 a day. It's a 25 minute walk to work and the same back, so even if I don't do anything else I know I’m getting some incidental exercise.

LolaIsHome · 13/03/2022 13:14

Working in tech area, it's so so easy to have sedentary lifestyle. I will say that many/most of the younger staff where I work are hugely into gym, an obsession for some of them! It's not for me :(

Since my mid-40s I've really taken more care of myself with respect to exercise. Same as some of the other posters during the work day I take stairs, book meeting rooms a bit further away on a different floor, walk to/from lunch (about 15 mins each way), fit a quick/short walk during kids hobbies sometimes.

At home I make a deliberate effort to more active and energetic move, walk, stretch and so on around the house (and in bed!!). As a result of that I get 10k+ steps a day. When I had covid last year, I wasn't really sick but had low energy. Those days I was getting about 1-2k steps only.

daisyjgrey · 13/03/2022 13:18

I do an hour of reformer Pilates every week. It's not enough but I'm really busy and also tired.

alfagirl73 · 13/03/2022 13:24

I do some form of exercise 4-5 times a week and the others are "active rest" days - ie. cleaning, gentle walk, just doing "stuff".

I do a boxing class at least once a week - sometimes twice. I have a personal training session for an hour once a week. Sometimes do HIIT class. The other sessions I do weights/cardio/functional type exercises based on what I do with my trainer or in class - I'm now where I know what to do so can just get on with it myself. I get bored easily so I mix it up. Now it's getting more into Spring I'm getting out walking more which I enjoy - clears my head.

For those who wonder how people fit it in or who don't enjoy the gym etc... well - until last year I was the same. This is the longest I have kept up with any form of fitness programme. What I will say is that it is something I am still getting used to in terms of just having it in my life. I overthink things, some days I'm full of energy, other days I'm struggling... it's something I am working on constantly - physically and mentally - and it's not easy but I'm getting there. I'm a self-confessed workaholic and for me it's a mental battle; this is the first time I'm really prioritising myself. I'm having to learn what works for me, my lifestyle, what I enjoy... so that I will establish a consistent and effective fitness routine in my life. It's an adjustment - more so than I expected - but I'm sticking with it.

For me I'm finding it better to go first thing - so I'm up super early and at the gym at 6am for the most part. I also block book my personal trainer - which gives me that commitment. But there is no set rule - you have to find what works for you and your lifestyle. Get one of the fitness apps/programmes you can put on your TV and do 10 mins here, 15 mins there... it's better than nothing and builds up - try things and see what you like. You don't have to be a runner or do yoga if it's not your thing - look at different forms of exercise.

ManateeFair · 13/03/2022 13:44

At the moment, I’m recovering from being ill and I’m not doing any. But I used to run 5K two or three times a week and do a couple of HIIT workouts. The benefits for me were huge - physically but also mentally. Huge boost to my confidence and self-esteem.

theyoungishman · 13/03/2022 14:31

I play pickleball for 3 hours per week, it's so much fun but I don't even realise I'm exercising! I've never been a gym person and I'm rubbish at jogging. I'm in my 40s and this is the only time I found something that I enjoy exercise wise!
As well that I try and do a couple of hour long walks each week. I'm WFH And often have webinars and training sessions To attend so I'll just pop on my headphones and listen to it while I do a walk around the park

HitTheCity · 13/03/2022 14:36

Prior to pandemic I got a decent amount of exercise during commute time. In fact I'd change to some sports gear and speed up on the way home in the evening! I'd never really thought about it, until working from home in pandemic, and it's really the only reason I'm glad to be back in office 3 days a week again.

DH does some running, and mixes that with brisk walks on non-running days. I go with him on the non-running days. He's fast, goes a good distance, and it really makes me work up a sweat.

HitTheCity · 13/03/2022 14:40

Is anyone using a standing desk or treadmill during work from home? I was thinking about that, but what put me off is a colleague using one, and during Teams calls it can sound like she's having sex at times (I know she is not, because we typically have cameras on!).

avocadotofu · 13/03/2022 14:40

Yoga and lots of walking.

HermioneWeasley · 13/03/2022 14:45

Cross trainer, weights and core training three or four times a week

I’ve got better energy and my bad back is much better

waterlego · 13/03/2022 14:55

I do Bodypump and Bodybalance 6 days a week and a Body Conditioning once a week which includes some cardio intervals. Also walk the dog daily for an hour or hour and a half. I’m a cardio dodger though Grin I get the HR up a bit in Body Con and in Pump but I should probably do more cardio. Hate running and HIIT though. Combat is my favourite cardio type of class.

Momicrone · 13/03/2022 15:07

Snailonthewhale, so you literally just drop and do a 1 minute plank five times a day? Good idea

Blackandwhitehorse · 13/03/2022 15:19

M - 30 min run
T - 30 min YouTube yoga
W - 30 min run
T - 30 min YouTube yoga
F - 30 min run
S - weighted work out - 30 mins
S - 30 min Pilates

Then on top of that 10 min morning yoga, 15 min Pilates every day. Plus around 5-7k steps.

I think the key is consistency and enjoying it. I’ve been doing the above since Jan and it lessens my appetite and is changing my body. All free too!

Funkyslippers · 13/03/2022 15:20

theyoungishman is pickleball quite easy? I'm not too bad at badminton but rubbish at tennis! They have sessions at my local gym but too scared to go along
